Justus quidem tu es,Certainly,Domine,O Lord,si disputem tecum:you are just.verumtamen justa loquar ad te:But if I may contend with you,Quare via impiorum prosperatur;while still speaking what is just to you:bene est omnibus qui prævaricanturWhy does the way of the impious prosper?et inique agunt? Why is it well with all those who transgress and act unfairly?

Plantasti eos,You planted them,et radicem miserunt:and they took root.proficiunt,They are prosperinget faciunt fructum:and bearing fruit.prope es tu ori eorum,You are near to their mouths,et longe a renibus eorum.but far from their hearts.

Et tu,And you,Domine,O Lord, nosti me,have known me well.vidisti me,You have seen me,et probasti cor meum tecum.and you have tested my heart with you.Congrega eos quasi gregem ad victimam,Gather them together like a flock for the sacrificeet sanctifica eos in die occisionis.and sanctify them for the day of slaughter.

Usquequo lugebit terra,How long shall the earth mourn?et herba omnis regionis siccabitur, propter malitiam habitantium in ea?And how long shall the plants of every field whither because of the wickedness of the inhabitants within them?Consumptum est animal, et volucre,It has consumed the wild animals and the birds.quoniam dixerunt: Non videbit novissima nostra. For they said: “He will not see our very end.”

Si cum peditibus currens laborasti,“If you have struggled to run on foot, quomodo contendere poteris cum equis?how will you be able to compete with horses?cum autem in terra pacis securus fueris,And if you have been secure in a land of peace, quid facies in superbia Jordanis?what will you do about the arrogance of the Jordan?

Nam et fratres tui,For even your brothers,et domus patris tui,and the house of your father, etiam ipsi pugnaverunt adversum te,even these have fought against you.et clamaverunt post te plena voce:And they have cried out after you with loud voice:ne credas eis,‘You should not believe them, cum locuti fuerint tibi bona.when they speak good things to you.’”

Reliqui domum meam;“I have abandoned my house.dimisi hæreditatem meam:I have disowned my inheritance.dedi dilectam animam meam in manu inimicorum ejus.I have given my beloved soul into the hand of its enemies.

Facta est mihi hæreditas mea quasi leo in silva:My inheritance has become for me like a lion in the forest.dedit contra me vocem,It has uttered a voice against me,ideo odivi eam.therefore, I have hated it.

Numquid avis discolor hæreditas mea mihi?Is my inheritance to me like a discolored bird?numquid avis tincta per totum? Is it like a bird that has entirely changed color?Venite,Approach and assemble, congregamini, all beasts of the earth!omnes bestiæ terræ:Hurry, properate ad devorandum.so that you may devour!

Pastores multi demoliti sunt vineam meam,Many pastors have demolished my vineyard.conculcaverunt partem meam,They have trampled my portion.dederunt portionem meam desiderabilem in desertum solitudinis. They have made my desirable portion into a desert of solitude.

Posuerunt eam in dissipationem,They have squandered it,luxitque super me:and it has grieved concerning me.desolatione desolata est omnis terra,The entire earth has become utterly desolate, quia nullus est qui recogitet corde.because there is no one who understands with the heart.”

Super omnes vias deserti venerunt vastatores,The devastators have arrived, over all the ways of the wilderness.quia gladius Domini devorabit:For the sword of the Lord will devour,ab extremo terræ usque ad extremum ejus, from one end of the earth even to its furthest limits.non est pax universæ carni. There is no peace for all that is flesh.

Seminaverunt triticum,They sowed wheat,et spinas messuerunt:but they reaped thorns.hæreditatem acceperunt,They received an inheritance,et non eis proderit.but it will not benefit them.Confundemini a fructibus vestris propter iram furoris Domini. You will be confounded by your own fruits, because of the wrath of the fury of the Lord.

Hæc dicit Dominus adversum omnes vicinos meos pessimos,Thus says the Lord against all my wicked neighbors, qui tangunt hæreditatem quam distribui populo meo Israël:who touch the inheritance that I have distributed to my people Israel:Ecce ego evellam eos de terra sua,“Behold, I will root them out of their own land,et domum Juda evellam de medio eorum.and I will root the house of Judah out of their midst.

Et cum evulsero eos,And when I have rooted them out, convertar,I will turn backet miserebor eorum, and take pity on them.et reducam eos:And I will lead them back, virum ad hæreditatem suam, one man to his inheritance,et virum in terram suam.and another man to his land.

Et erit:And this shall be:si eruditi didicerint vias populi mei,if they are taught and they learn the ways of my people,ut jurent in nomine meo:so that they swear by my name,Vivit Dominus!‘As the Lord lives,’sicut docuerunt populum meum jurare in Baal, just as they had taught my people to swear by Baal,ædificabuntur in medio populi mei.then they will be built up in the midst of my people.

Quod si non audierint,But if they will not listen, evellam gentem illam evulsione et perditione,I will uproot that nation unto utter destruction and perdition, ait Dominus.says the Lord.”
