Væ pastoribus qui disperdunt et dilacerant gregem pascuæ meæ!“Woe to the shepherds who scatter and tear apart the sheep of my pasture, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Ideo hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël ad pastores qui pascunt populum meum:Because of this, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,Vos dispersistis gregem meum,to the shepherds who pasture my people:et ejecistis eos,You have scattered my flock,et non visitastis eos:and you have driven them away, ecce ego visitabo super vos malitiam studiorum vestrorum, and you have not visited them. Behold, I will visit upon you because of your evil pursuits, ait Dominus.says the Lord.

Et ego congregabo reliquias gregis mei de omnibus terris ad quas ejecero eos illuc:And I will gather together the remnant of my flock from the entire earth,et convertam eos ad rura sua, from the places to which I had cast them out.et crescentAnd I will return them to their own fields.et multiplicabuntur. And they will increase and be multiplied.

Et suscitabo super eos pastores,And I will raise up shepherds over them,et pascent eos:and they will pasture them.non formidabunt ultra,They will no longer dread,et non pavebunt, and they will no longer fear.et nullus quæretur ex numero,And no one among their number will be seeking more, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Ecce dies veniunt,Behold, dicit Dominus, the days are approaching,et suscitabo David germen justum:says the Lord,et regnabit rex, when I will raise up to David a righteous branch.et sapiens erit,And a king will reign,et faciet judiciumand he will be wise.et justitiam in terra. And he will exercise judgment and justice upon the earth.

In diebus illis salvabitur Juda,In those days, Judah will be saved,et Israël habitabit confidenter:and Israel will live in confidence.et hoc est nomen quod vocabunt eum:And this is the name that they will call him:Dominus justus noster.‘The Lord, our Just One.’

Propter hoc ecce dies veniunt,Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et non dicent ultra:when they will no longer say,Vivit Dominus,‘As the Lord lives, qui eduxit filios Israël de terra Ægypti, who led the sons of Israel away from the land of Egypt,’

sed:but instead,Vivit Dominus,‘As the Lord lives, qui eduxit et adduxit semen domus Israël de terra aquilonis, who led away and brought back the offspring of the house of Israel from the land of the north and from the entire earth,’et de cunctis terris ad quas ejeceram eos illuc, from the places to which I had cast them out.et habitabunt in terra sua.And they will live in their own land.”

Ad prophetas:To the prophets:Contritum est cor meum in medio mei;“My heart is crushed within me.contremuerunt omnia ossa mea:All my bones are trembling.factus sum quasi vir ebrius,I have become like an inebriated man,et quasi homo madidus a vino, and like a man maddened by wine,a facie Domini, before the face of the Lord,et a facie verborum sanctorum ejus.and before the face of his holy words.

Quia adulteris repleta est terra,For the earth is full of adulterers!quia a facie maledictionis luxit terra,And the earth has mourned before the face of evil talk.arefacta sunt arva deserti:The plains of the desert have dried up,factus est cursus eorum malus, and their course has become hazardous,et fortitudo eorum dissimilis.and their firmness has become uneven.”

Propheta namque et sacerdos polluti sunt,“For both the prophet and the priest have become polluted,et in domo mea inveni malum eorum, and I have found their wickedness within my own house, ait Dominus.says the Lord.

Idcirco via eorum erit quasi lubricum in tenebris:For this reason, their way will be like a slippery path in the dark.impellentur enim,For they will be impelled forward,et corruent in ea:and they will fall in it.afferam enim super eos mala,For I will bring evils over them, annum visitationis eorum,in the year of their visitation, ait Dominus.says the Lord.

Et in prophetis Samariæ vidi fatuitatem:And I have seen the foolishness of the prophets of Samaria.prophetabant in Baal,They have prophesied in Baal,et decipiebant populum meum Israël.and they have deceived my people Israel.

Et in prophetis Jerusalem vidi similitudinem adulterantium,And in the prophets of Jerusalem,et iter mendacii:I have seen the likeness of adulterers and the path of falsehood.et confortaverunt manus pessimorum,And they have strengthened the hands of the wicked,ut non converteretur unusquisque a malitia sua:so that each one would not convert from his malice.facti sunt mihi omnes ut Sodoma,They have all become to me like Sodom,et habitatores ejus quasi Gomorrha.and its inhabitants have become like Gomorrah.”

Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum ad prophetas:Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts to the prophets: “Behold,Ecce ego cibabo eos absinthio, et potabo eos felle:I will feed them absinthe, and I will give them gall to drink.a prophetis enim Jerusalem egressa est pollutio super omnem terram. For from the prophets of Jerusalem corruption has gone forth over the entire earth.”

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Nolite audire verba prophetarum qui prophetant vobis,“Do not choose to listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to youet decipiunt vos:and deceive you.visionem cordis sui loquuntur,They speak a vision from their own heart, non de ore Domini.and not from the mouth of the Lord.

Dicunt his qui blasphemant me:To those who blaspheme me, they say:Locutus est Dominus: Pax erit vobis:‘The Lord has said: You shall have peace.’et omni qui ambulat in pravitate cordis sui dixerunt:And to everyone who walks in the depravity of his own heart, they have said:Non veniet super vos malum.‘No evil will overwhelm you.’”

Quis enim affuit in consilio Domini,For who has been present in the counsel of the Lord,et vidit, and who has seenet audivit sermonem ejus?and heard his word?quis consideravit verbum illius,Who has considered his wordet audivit?and heard it?

Ecce turbo Dominicæ indignationis egredietur,Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord’s indignation will go forth,et tempestas erumpens super caput impiorum veniet.and a tempest will break out; it will overwhelm the head of the impious.

Non revertetur furor Domini,The fury of the Lord will not return until it succeeds, usque dum faciatand until it completes the plan of his heart.et usque dum compleat cogitationem cordis sui:In the last days,in novissimis diebus intelligetis consilium ejus.you will understand this counsel.

Non mittebam prophetas,“I did not send these prophets,et ipsi currebant:yet they hurry forward.non loquebar ad eos,I was not speaking to them,et ipsi prophetabant.yet they were prophesying.

Si stetissent in consilio meo,If they had stood in my counsel,et nota fecissent verba mea populo meo,and if I had made my words known to my people, avertissem utique eos a via sua mala, certainly I would have turned them away from their evil wayset a cogitationibus suis pessimis.and from their most wicked plans.

Putasne Deus e vicino ego sum,Do you not realize that I am a God close by,dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et non Deus de longe?and not a God far away?

Si occultabitur vir in absconditis,If a man is hidden in concealed places,et ego non videbo eum?do I not see him, dicit Dominus.says the Lord?Numquid non cælum et terram ego impleo?Do I not fill up heaven and earth, dicit Dominus.says the Lord?

Audivi quæ dixerunt prophetæ prophetantes in nomine meo mendacium,I have heard what the prophets have said, prophesying falsehoods in my name, atque dicentes: Somniavi, and also saying: ‘I have dreamed!somniavi.I have dreamed!’

Usquequo istud est in corde prophetarum vaticinantium mendacium,How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who predict what is false,et prophetantium seductiones cordis sui?and who prophesy deceptions from their own heart?

Qui volunt facere ut obliviscatur populus meus nominis mei,They want to cause my people to forget my name, propter somnia eorum quæ narrat unusquisque ad proximum suum,by means of their dreams, which each of them describes to his neighbor, sicut obliti sunt patres eorum nominis mei propter Baal?just as their fathers forgot my name for the sake of Baal.

Propheta qui habet somnium,The prophet who has had a dream, narret somnium:let him describe the dream.et qui habet sermonem meum,And he who receives my word, loquatur sermonem meum vere.let him speak my word in truth.Quid paleis ad triticum? For what has the chaff to do with the wheat, dicit Dominus.says the Lord?

Numquid non verba mea sunt quasi ignis,Are not my words like a fire, dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et quasi malleus conterens petram?and like a hammer crushing rock?

Propterea ecce ego ad prophetas,Therefore, behold: I am against the prophets, ait Dominus, says the Lord, qui furantur verba mea unusquisque a proximo suo.who steal my words, each one from his neighbor.

Ecce ego ad prophetas,Behold, ait Dominus,I am against the prophets, qui assumunt linguas suas, says the Lord,et aiunt:who take up their tongues and say:Dicit Dominus.‘The Lord says it.’

Ecce ego ad prophetas somniantes mendacium,Behold, ait Dominus,I am against the prophets, qui narraverunt ea,who dream what is false,et seduxerunt populum meum in mendacio suosays the Lord;et in miraculis suis, who explain and so seduce my people with their falsehoods and with their miracles, cum ego non misissem eos, though I did not send them, nec mandassem eis:nor did I command them.qui nihil profuerunt populo huic,They have offered nothing beneficial to this people, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Si igitur interrogaverit te populus iste,Therefore, if this people, or a prophet, vel propheta, aut sacerdos,or a priest questions you, saying, dicens: Quod est onus Domini?‘What is the burden of the Lord?’dices ad eos:you shall say to them,Vos estis onus:‘You are the burden.projiciam quippe vos,And certainly I will cast you away, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.’

Et propheta,And as for the prophet,et sacerdos, and the priest,et populus qui dicit:and the people who say,Onus Domini:‘The burden of the Lord!’visitabo super virum illum et super domum ejus.I will visit upon that man and upon his house.

Hæc dicetis unusquisque ad proximum,And then you will speak in this way,et ad fratrem suum:each one to his neighbor and to his brother:Quid respondit Dominus?‘What has the Lord answered?et quid locutus est Dominus? And what has the Lord said?’

Et onus Domini ultra non memorabitur:And the burden of the Lord will no longer be called to mind.quia onus erit unicuique sermo suus,For each one’s own word will be a burden.et pervertistis verba Dei viventis,For you have perverted the words of the living God,Domini exercituum,of the Lord of hosts,Dei nostri.our God.

Hæc dices ad prophetam:And then you will speak in this way to the prophet:Quid respondit tibi Dominus?‘What has the Lord answered you?et quid locutus est Dominus? And what has the Lord spoken?’

Si autem onus Domini dixeritis,But if you say, ‘The burden of the Lord!’propter hoc hæc dicit Dominus:then because of this, thus says the Lord:Quia dixistis sermonem istum: Onus Domini,Since you have spoken this word, ‘The burden of the Lord!’et misi ad vos dicens: Nolite dicere:though I sent to you telling you not to say:Onus Domini:‘The burden of the Lord,’

propterea ecce ego tollam vos portans, because of this, behold, I will take you away,et derelinquam vos, like a burden, and I will forsake you,et civitatem quam dedi vobis et patribus vestris,as well as the city that I gave to you and to your fathers,a facie mea:before my face.

et dabo vos in opprobrium sempiternum,And I will give you over to an everlasting reproachet in ignominiam æternam, and an eternal disgrace,quæ numquam oblivione delebitur.which shall never be wiped away into oblivion.”
