Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam a Domino quando Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis,The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord,et omnis exercitus ejus, when Nebuchadnezzar, universaque regna terræ quæ erant sub potestate manus ejus, the king of Babylon,et omnes populi, and his entire army, bellabant contra Jerusalem, and all the kingdoms of the earth that were under the authority of his hand,et contra omnes urbes ejus, and all the people were making war against Jerusalem and against all of its cities, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Vade,“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:et loquere ad Sedeciam regem Juda,Go, and speak to Zedekiah, the king of Judah.et dices ad eum:And you shall say to him:Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Ecce ego tradam civitatem hanc in manus regis Babylonis,Behold, I will deliver this city into the hands of the king of Babylon,et succendet eam igni:and he will burn it with fire.

et tu non effugies de manu ejus,And you will not escape from his hand. Instead, sed comprehensione capieris, you will be overtaken and captured,et in manu ejus traderis:and you will be delivered into his hand.et oculi tui oculos regis Babylonis videbunt,And your eyes will see the eyes of the king of Babylon,et os ejus cum ore tuo loquetur, and his mouth will speak with your mouth,et Babylonem introibis.and you will enter into Babylon.

Attamen audi verbum Domini,Even so, listen to the word of the Lord,Sedecia,Zedekiah, rex Juda:king of Judah:Hæc dicit Dominus ad te:Thus says the Lord to you:Non morieris in gladio,You will not die by the sword.

sed in pace morieris:Instead, you will die in peace.et secundum combustiones patrum tuorum,And, in accord with the burnings of your fathers, regum priorum qui fuerunt ante te,the former kings who were before you,sic comburent te:so will they burn you.et: Væ domine,And they will mourn you, plangent te:saying: ‘Alas, quia verbum ego locutus sum, lord!’ For I have spoken the word, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”

Et locutus est Jeremias propheta ad Sedeciam regem Juda universa verba hæc in Jerusalem. And Jeremiah, the prophet, spoke all these words to Zedekiah, the king of Judah, in Jerusalem.

Et exercitus regis Babylonis pugnabat contra Jerusalem,And the army of the king of Babylon fought against Jerusalemet contra omnes civitates Juda quæ reliquæ erant, and against all the cities of Judah that remained, contra Lachis et contra Azecha:against Lachishhæ enim supererant de civitatibus Juda, and against Azekah.urbes munitæ.For only these remained out of the cities of Judah that were fortified cities.

Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam a Domino,The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, postquam percussit rex Sedecias fœdus cum omni populo in Jerusalem, after king Zedekiah had struck a pact with all the people in Jerusalem,prædicansproclaiming

ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam, that each one should release his man servant, and each one his woman servant,Hebræum et Hebræam, liberos,as a free Hebrew man and a free Hebrew woman,et nequaquam dominarentur eis,and that they should never be rulers over them,id est, that is,in Judæo et fratre suo.over the Jews, their own brothers.

Audierunt ergo omnes principes et universus populus qui inierant pactum ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam liberos,Then all the leaders and all the people who entered into the pact, heard that each one should release his man servant, and each one his woman servant,et ultra non dominarentur eis:to be free, and that they should no longer rule over them.audierunt igitur,Therefore, they listened,et dimiserunt.and they released them.

Et conversi sunt deinceps:But later on,et retraxerunt servosthey turned back.et ancillas suas quos dimiserant liberos,And they took back again their man servants and their woman servants,et subjugaverunt in famuloswhom they had released to be free.et famulas. And they subjugated them as male and female servants.

Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam a Domino,And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord, dicens:saying:

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Ego percussi fœdus cum patribus vestris in die qua eduxi eos de terra Ægypti,I struck a pact with your fathers in the day when I led them away from the land of Egypt,de domo servitutis, from the house of servitude, dicens:saying:

Cum completi fuerint septem anni,‘When seven years have been completed, dimittat unusquisque fratrem suum Hebræum,let each one release his brother, a Hebrew, qui venditus est ei:who had been sold to him.et serviet tibi sex annis,And so he will serve you for six years,et dimittes eum a te liberum:and then you shall release him to be free from you.’et non audierunt patres vestri me,But your fathers did not listen to me,nec inclinaverunt aurem suam.nor did they incline their ear.

Et conversi estis vos hodie,And today you converted,et fecistis quod rectum est in oculis meis, and you did what is right in my eyes,ut prædicaretis libertatem unusquisque ad amicum suum:so that you proclaimed liberty, each one to his friend.et inistis pactum in conspectu meo,And you entered into a pact in my sight,in domo in qua invocatum est nomen meum super eam:in the house in which and over which my name is invoked.

et reversi estis,But now you have turned back,et commaculastis nomen meum, and you have stained my name. For you have led back again,et reduxistis unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam quos dimiseratis ut essent liberi et suæ potestatis, each one his man servant, and each one his woman servant, whom you had released so that they would be free and under their own authority.et subjugastis eos ut sint vobis servi et ancillæ.And you have subjugated them, so that they would be your servants and handmaids.”

Propterea hæc dicit Dominus:Because of this, thus says the Lord:Vos non audistis me,“You have not heeded me,ut prædicaretis libertatem unusquisque fratri suo et unusquisque amico suo:though you proclaimed liberty, each one to his brother and each one to his friend.ecce ego prædico vobis libertatem,Behold, I am proclaiming a liberty for you,ait Dominus, says the Lord,ad gladium,to the sword,ad pestem,to pestilence,et ad famem, and to famine.et dabo vos in commotionem cunctis regnis terræ.And I will cause you to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth.

Et dabo viros qui prævaricantur fœdus meum,And I will give over the men who have betrayed my covenant,et non observaverunt verba fœderis quibus assensi sunt in conspectu meo,and who have not observed the words of the covenant, vitulum quem conciderunt in duas partes,to which they assented in my sight when they cut the calf into two partset transierunt inter divisiones ejus, and passed between its parts:

principes Juda et principes Jerusalem, the leaders of Judah, and the leaders of Jerusalem, eunuchi et sacerdotes, the eunuchs and the priests,et omnis populus terræ,and all the people of the land, qui transierunt inter divisiones vituli:who have passed between the parts of the calf.

et dabo eos in manus inimicorum suorum, et in manus quærentium animam eorum,And I will give them into the hands of their enemies and into the hands of those who are seeking their life.et erit morticinum eorum in escam volatilibus cæli et bestiis terræ.And their dead bodies will be food for the birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth.

Et Sedeciam regem Juda,And Zedekiah, the king of Judah,et principes ejus, dabo in manus inimicorum suorum, and his leaders, I will give over to the hands of their enemies,et in manus quærentium animas eorum, and to the hands of those who are seeking their lives,et in manus exercituum regis Babylonis, and to the hands of the armies of the king of Babylon, qui recesserunt a vobis.which had withdrawn from you.

Ecce ego præcipio,Behold, I will command, dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et reducam eos in civitatem hanc, and I will lead them back to this city,et præliabuntur adversus eam,and they will fight against it,et capient eam,and seize it,et incendent igni:and set it on fire.et civitates Juda dabo in solitudinem,And I will make the cities of Judah into a desolation,eo quod non sit habitator.for there shall be no inhabitant.”
