Et factum est in anno quarto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda,And it happened in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah:factum est verbum hoc ad Jeremiam a Domino,it happened that this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, dicens:saying:
Tolle volumen libri,“Take the volume of a book,et scribes in eo omnia verba quæ locutus sum tibi adversum Israël et Judam, and you shall write in it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah,et adversum omnes gentes, and against all the nations,a die qua locutus sum ad te ex diebus Josiæ usque ad diem hanc:from the day when I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.
si forte,Perhaps it may be that the house of Judah, audiente domo Juda universa mala quæ ego cogito facere eis, upon hearing all the evils that I have decided to do to them, revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima, may return,et propitius ero iniquitatieach one from his wicked way,et peccato eorum.and then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
Vocavit ergo Jeremias Baruch filium Neriæ: et scripsit Baruch ex ore Jeremiæ omnes sermones Domini quos locutus est ad eum, in volumine libri:Therefore, Jeremiah called Baruch, the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote, from the mouth of Jeremiah, all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken to him, in the volume of a book.
et præcepit Jeremias Baruch,And Jeremiah instructed Baruch, dicens:saying:Ego clausus sum,“I am confined, nec valeo ingredi domum Domini.and so I am unable to enter into the house of the Lord.
Ingredere ergo tu,Therefore,et lege de volumine in quo scripsisti ex ore meo verba Domini, you shall enter and read from the volume, audiente populo in domo Domini,in which you have written from my mouth the words of the Lord,in die jejunii:in the hearing of the people in the house of the Lord on the day of the fast.insuper et audiente universo Juda qui veniunt de civitatibus suis,Moreover, leges eis,you shall also read them in the hearing of all those of Judah who are arriving from their cities.
si forte cadat oratio eorum in conspectu Domini,Perhaps it may happen that they pray in the sight of the Lord,et revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima:and each one may return from his wicked way.quoniam magnus furor et indignatio est quam locutus est Dominus adversus populum hunc. For great is the fury and indignation that the Lord has declared against this people.”
Et fecit Baruch filius Neriæ juxta omnia quæ præceperat ei Jeremias propheta, legens ex volumine sermones Domini in domo Domini. And Baruch, the son of Neriah, acted in accord with all that Jeremiah, the prophet, had instructed him, reading from the volume the words of the Lord, in the house of the Lord.
Factum est autem in anno quinto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, in mense nono: prædicaverunt jejunium in conspectu Domini omni populo in Jerusalem, et universæ multitudini quæ confluxerat de civitatibus Juda in Jerusalem. And it happened that, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, in the ninth month, they proclaimed a fast, in the sight of the Lord, to all the people in Jerusalem, and to the entire multitude which had flowed together, from the cities of Judah, into Jerusalem.
Legitque Baruch ex volumine sermones Jeremiæ in domo Domini,And Baruch read from the volume the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord,in gazophylacio Gamariæ filii Saphan scribæ,at the treasury of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, the scribe,in vestibulo superiori, in introitu portæ novæ domus Domini,in the upper vestibule, at the entrance to the new gate of the house of the Lord, audiente omni populo.in the hearing of all the people.
Cumque audisset Michæas filius Gamariæ filii Saphan omnes sermones Domini ex libro,And when Micaiah, the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the Lord from the book,
descendit in domum regis,he descended to the house of the king,ad gazophylacium scribæ,to the treasury of the scribe.et ecce ibi omnes principes sedebant:And behold, all the leaders were sitting there:Elisama scriba,Elishama, the scribe,et Dalaias filius Semeiæ,and Delaiah, the son of Shemaiah,et Elnathan filius Achobor, and Elnathan, the son of Achbor,et Gamarias filius Saphan, and Gemariah, the son of Shaphan,et Sedecias filius Hananiæ,and Zedekiah, the son of Hananiah,et universi principes:and all the leaders.
et nuntiavit eis Michæas omnia verba quæ audivit, legente Baruch ex volumine in auribus populi. And Micaiah announced to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the volume to the ears of the people.
Miserunt itaque omnes principes ad Baruch Judi filium Nathaniæ filii Selemiæ filii Chusi, dicentes: Volumen ex quo legisti, audiente populo, sume in manu tua, et veni. Tulit ergo Baruch filius Neriæ volumen in manu sua, et venit ad eos:And so, all the leaders sent Jehudi, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the volume, from which you have read in the hearing of the people, and come.” Therefore, Baruch, the son of Neriah, took the volume in his hand, and he went to them.
et dixerunt ad eum:And they said to him,Sede,“Sitet lege hæc in auribus nostris.and read these things in our hearing.”Et legit Baruch in auribus eorum. And Baruch read in their hearing.
Igitur cum audissent omnia verba,Therefore, when they had heard all the words, obstupuerunt unusquisque ad proximum suum, each one looked at his neighbor in astonishment,et dixerunt ad Baruch:and they said to Baruch:Nuntiare debemus regi omnes sermones istos.“We ought to report all these words to the king.”
Et interrogaverunt eum,And they questioned him, dicentes:saying,Indica nobis quomodo scripsisti omnes sermones istos ex ore ejus.“Describe to us how you wrote all these words from his mouth.”
Dixit autem eis Baruch:Then Baruch said to them:Ex ore suo loquebatur quasi legens ad me omnes sermones istos,“He was speaking with his mouth, as if reading to me.et ego scribebam in volumine atramento. And I wrote in a volume with ink.”
Et dixerunt principes ad Baruch:And the leaders said to Baruch:Vade, et abscondere,“Go away and hide,tu et Jeremias, you and Jeremiah,et nemo sciat ubi sitis.and let no one know where you are.”
Et ingressi sunt ad regem in atrium:And they entered to the king, in the court.porro volumen commendaverunt in gazophylacio Elisamæ scribæ,Furthermore, they stored the volume in the treasury of Elishama, the scribe.et nuntiaverunt, audiente rege, omnes sermones. And they announced all the words in the hearing of the king.
Misitque rex Judi ut sumeret volumen:And the king sent Jehudi to take the volume.qui tollens illud de gazophylacio Elisamæ scribæ,And bringing it from the treasury of Elishama, legit, the scribe, audiente rege et universis principibus qui stabant circa regem.he read it in the hearing of the king and of all the leaders who were standing around the king.
Rex autem sedebat in domo hiemali,Now the king was sitting in the winter house,in mense nono,in the ninth month.et posita erat arula coram eo plena prunis. And there was a hearth placed before him, filled with burning coals.
Cumque legisset Judi tres pagellas vel quatuor,And when Jehudi had read three or four pages, scidit illud scalpello scribæ,he cut it with a small knife,et projecit in ignem qui erat super arulam, and he threw it into the fire which was upon the hearth, donec consumeretur omne volumen igni qui erat in arula.until the entire volume was consumed by the fire which was upon the hearth.
Et non timuerunt,And the king and all his servants, neque sciderunt vestimenta sua,who had heard all these words, rexwere not afraid,et omnes servi ejus qui audierunt universos sermones istos.and they did not rend their garments.
Verumtamen Elnathan,Yet truly,et Dalaias,Elnathan,et Gamarias, and Delaiah, contradixerunt regi, and Gemariah contradicted the king,ne combureret librum:so that he might not burn the book.et non audivit eos.But he did not listen to them.
Et præcepit rex Jeremiel filio Amelech,And the king instructed Jerahmeel, the son of Amelech,et Saraiæ filio Ezriel, and Seraiah, the son of Azriel,et Selemiæ filio Abdeel, and Shelemiah, the son of Abdeel,ut comprehenderent Baruch scribam,so that they would apprehend Baruch, the scribe,et Jeremiam prophetam:and Jeremiah, the prophet.abscondit autem eos Dominus. But the Lord concealed them.
Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam,And after the king had burned the volume and the words that Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremiah, postquam combusserat rex volumenthe word of the Lord came to Jeremiah,et sermones quos scripserat Baruch ex ore Jeremiæ,the prophet, dicens:saying:
Rursum tolle volumen aliud,“Again, take another volume and write in it all the former words,et scribe in eo omnes sermones priores qui erant in primo volumine, which were in the first volume that Jehoiakim, quod combussit Joakim rex Juda.the king of Judah, has burned.
Et ad Joakim regem Juda dices:And you shall say to Jehoiakim,Hæc dicit Dominus:the king of Judah:Tu combussisti volumen illud,Thus says the Lord:dicens:You have burned that volume,Quare scripsisti in eo annuntians:saying:Festinus veniet rex Babylonis,‘Why have you written in it,et vastabit terram hanc, announcing that the king of Babylon will advance quickly,et cessare faciet ex illa hominemand will devastate this land,et jumentum?and will cause both man and beast to cease from it?’
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus contra Joakim regem Juda:Because of this, thus says the Lord against Jehoiakim, the king of Judah:Non erit ex eo qui sedeat super solium David:There will be, from him, no one who may sit upon the throne of David.et cadaver ejus projicietur ad æstum per diem,And his dead body shall be cast out: to the heat by day,et ad gelu per noctem.and to the frost by night.
Et visitabo contra eum,And I will visit against him,et contra semen ejus, and against his offspring,et contra servos ejus, iniquitates suas:and against his servants for their iniquities.et adducam super eos,And I will lead over them,et super habitatores Jerusalem, and over the inhabitants of Jerusalem,et super viros Juda, and over the men of Judah, omne malum quod locutus sum ad eos,all the evil that I have declared against them,et non audierunt.for they have not listened.”
Then Jeremiah took up another volume, and he gave it to Baruch, the son of Neriah, the scribe, who wrote in it, from the mouth of Jeremiah, all the words of the book that Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, had burned with fire. And moreover, there were many more words added than there had been before.
