Et regnavit rex Sedecias filius Josiæ pro Jechonia filio Joakim, quem constituit regem Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis in terra Juda:And then king Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, reigned in place of Jeconiah, the son of Jehoiakim. For Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, appointed him as king in the land of Judah.
et non obedivit ipse,And neither he himself,et servi ejus, nor his servants,et populus terræ,nor the people of the land, verbis Domini, obeyed the words of the Lord,quæ locutus est in manu Jeremiæ prophetæ.which he spoke by the hand of Jeremiah, the prophet.
Et misit rex Sedecias Juchal filium Selemiæ,And king Zedekiah sent Jehucal, the son of Shelemiah,et Sophoniam filium Maasiæ,and Zephaniah, the son of Maaseiah, sacerdotem, the priest,ad Jeremiam prophetam,to Jeremiah the prophet, dicens:saying:Ora pro nobis Dominum Deum nostrum.“Pray to the Lord our God for us.”
Jeremias autem libere ambulabat in medio populi:Now Jeremiah was walking freely in the midst of the people.non enim miserant eum in custodiam carceris. For they had not yet sent him into the custody of the prison.Igitur exercitus Pharaonis egressus est de Ægypto,And then the army of Pharaoh went forth from Egypt.et audientes Chaldæi qui obsidebant Jerusalem,And hearing this, the Chaldeans, hujuscemodi nuntium, who were besieging Jerusalem, recesserunt ab Jerusalem.withdrew from Jerusalem.
Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam,And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, dicens:saying:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Sic dicetis regi Juda, qui misit vos ad me interrogandum:So shall you say to the king of Judah, who sent you to question me:Ecce exercitus Pharaonis,Behold, the army of Pharaoh, qui egressus est vobis in auxilium, which has gone forth in assistance to you, revertetur in terram suam in Ægyptum:will return to their own land, into Egypt.
et redient Chaldæi,And the Chaldeans will returnet bellabunt contra civitatem hanc, and will make war against this city.et capient eam,And they will seize itet succendent eam igni.and burn it with fire.
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Nolite decipere animas vestras,Do not be willing to deceive your own souls, dicentes:saying:Euntes abibunt,‘The Chaldeans will certainly withdrawet recedent a nobis Chaldæi:and go away from us.’quia non abibunt. For they will not go away.
Sed etsi percusseritis omnem exercitum Chaldæorum qui præliantur adversum vos,But even if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans who are fighting against you,et derelicti fuerint ex eis aliqui vulnerati, and if there were left behind from among them only a few wounded men, singuli de tentorio suo consurgent, they would rise up, each one from his tent,et incendent civitatem hanc igni.and they would burn this city with fire.”
Ergo cum recessisset exercitus Chaldæorum ab Jerusalem,Therefore, propter exercitum Pharaonis, when the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army,
egressus est Jeremias de Jerusalem ut iret in terram Benjamin,Jeremiah went forth from Jerusalem, to go into the land of Benjamin,et divideret ibi possessionem in conspectu civium.and to distribute a possession there, in the sight of the citizens.
Cumque pervenisset ad portam Benjamin,And when he had arrived at the gate of Benjamin, erat ibi custos portæ per vices, the keeper of the gate, whose turn it was to be there, nomine Jerias filius Selemiæ filii Hananiæ:was named Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah.et apprehendit Jeremiam prophetam,And he apprehended Jeremiah the prophet, saying, dicens: Ad Chaldæos profugis.“You are fleeing to the Chaldeans.”
Et respondit Jeremias:And Jeremiah responded:Falsum est:“That is false.non fugio ad Chaldæos.I am not fleeing to the Chaldeans.”Et non audivit eum,But he did not listen to him.sed comprehendit Jerias Jeremiam,And so Irijah took Jeremiah,et adduxit eum ad principes:and he brought him to the leaders.
quam ob rem irati principes contra Jeremiam,Therefore, the leaders were angry with Jeremiah,cæsum eum miserunt in carcerem qui erat in domo Jonathan scribæ:and so they beat him and sent him to the prison that was in the house of Jonathan, ipse enim præpositus erat super carcerem.the scribe. For he was the chief over the prison.
Itaque ingressus est Jeremias in domum laci et in ergastulum:And so Jeremiah went into the house of the prison and into a dungeon.et sedit ibi Jeremias diebus multis. And Jeremiah sat there for many days.
Mittens autem Sedecias rex,Then Zedekiah the king, tulit eum:sending,et interrogavit eum in domo sua abscondite, took him out and questioned him secretly in his house,et dixit:and he said:Putasne est sermo a Domino?“Do you think that there is any word from the Lord?”Et dixit Jeremias:And Jeremiah said:Est:“There is.”et ait:And he said:In manus regis Babylonis traderis.“You will be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon.”
Et dixit Jeremias ad regem Sedeciam:And Jeremiah said to king Zedekiah:Quid peccavi tibi,“How have I sinned against you,et servis tuis,or your servants,et populo tuo,or your people, quia misisti me in domum carceris?such that you would cast me into a house of imprisonment?
ubi sunt prophetæ vestri,Where are your prophets, qui prophetabant vobis, who were prophesying to you,et dicebant:and who were saying:Non veniet rex Babylonis super vos,‘The king of Babylon will not overwhelm youet super terram hanc?and this land?’
Nunc ergo audi,Now therefore, listen, obsecro,I beg you, domine mi rex:my lord the king.valeat deprecatio mea in conspectu tuo, et ne me remittas in domum Jonathan scribæ,Let my petition prevail in your sight. And do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe,ne moriar ibi.lest I die there.”
Præcepit ergo rex Sedecias ut traderetur Jeremias in vestibulo carceris,Then king Zedekiah instructed that Jeremiah be confined to the vestibule of the prison,et daretur ei torta panis quotidie, and that they should give him a twist of bread daily, excepto pulmento, along with stew, donec consumerentur omnes panes de civitate:until all the bread in the city had been consumed.et mansit Jeremias in vestibulo carceris. And Jeremiah remained at the entrance of the prison.
