Sermo qui factus est ad Jeremiam a Domino,The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, postquam dimissus est a Nabuzardan magistro militiæ de Rama, the leader of the military, had released him from Ramah, where he had taken him, quando tulit eum vinctum catenis in medio omnium qui migrabant de Jerusalem et Juda, bound in chains, along with all those who were being carried away from Jerusalem and from Judah,et ducebantur in Babylonem.and were being led to Babylon.
Tollens ergo princeps militiæ Jeremiam,Therefore, the leader of the military, dixit ad eum:taking Jeremiah,Dominus Deus tuus locutus est malum hoc super locum istum:said to him: “The Lord your God has declared this evil over this place,
et adduxit, and he has brought it.et fecit Dominus sicut locutus est,And the Lord has done just as he has spoken.quia peccastis Domino,For you have sinned against the Lord,et non audistis vocem ejus:and you have not heeded his voice,et factus est vobis sermo hic.and so this word has happened to you.
Nunc ergo ecce solvi te hodie de catenis quæ sunt in manibus tuis:Now therefore, behold, I have released you this day from the chains which were on your hands.si placet tibi ut venias mecum in Babylonem,If it pleases you to come with me into Babylon, veni, et ponam oculos meos super te:then come. And I will set my eyes upon you.si autem displicet tibi venire mecum in Babylonem,But if it displeases you to come with me into Babylon, then remain.reside:Behold, ecce omnis terra in conspectu tuo est:all the land is in your sight. Whatever you will choose, quod elegeris, et quo placuerit tibi ut vadas, and wherever it will please you to go, so shall you go,illuc perge:proceeding to that place.
et mecum noli venire,And you may decline to come with me.sed habita apud Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan,For you may live with Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, quem præposuit rex Babylonis civitatibus Juda:whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah. Therefore, habita ergo cum eo in medio populi:you may live with him in the midst of the people.vel quocumque placuerit tibi ut vadas,And you may go wherever it will please you to go.”vade. Dedit quoque ei magister militiæ cibaria et munuscula,And the leader of the military also gave him foods and gifts,et dimisit eum.and he released him.
Venit autem Jeremias ad Godoliam filium Ahicam in Masphath,Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah.et habitavit cum eo in medio populi qui relictus fuerat in terra. And he lived with him in the midst of the people, those who had been left behind in the land.
Cumque audissent omnes principes exercitus,And when all the leaders of the army, qui dispersi fuerant per regiones, who had been dispersed throughout the regions, ipsi et socii eorum, they and their associates, quod præfecisset rex Babylonis Godoliam filium Ahicam terræ,had heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, governor of the land,et quod commendasset ei viros, et mulieres, and that he had committed to him the men, and women,et parvulos, and children,et de pauperibus terræ,and the poor of the land, qui non fuerant translati in Babylonem, who had not been carried away to Babylon,
venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath, they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah,et Ismahel filius Nathaniæ,with Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah,et Johanan et Jonathan filii Caree, and Johanan and Jonathan, the sons of Kareah,et Sareas filius Thanehumeth, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth,et filii Ophi, qui erant de Netophathi, and the sons of Ephai, who were of Netophathi,et Jezonias filius Maachathi, and Jezaniah, the son of Maacathi, ipsi et viri eorum.they and their men.
Et juravit eis Godolias filius Ahicam filii Saphan,And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,et comitibus eorum, swore to them and to their companions, dicens:saying:Nolite timere servire Chaldæis:“Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans.habitate in terra,Live in the land,et servite regi Babylonis, and serve the king of Babylon,et bene erit vobis.and it will be well with you.
Ecce ego habito in Masphath,Behold, I live at Mizpah,ut respondeam præcepto Chaldæorum qui mittuntur ad nos:so that I may follow the instruction of the Chaldeans who are sent to us.vos autem colligite vindemiam,But as for you, gather the vintage,et messem, and the harvest,et oleum, and the oil,et condite in vasis vestris, and store it up in your vessels,et manete in urbibus vestris quas tenetis.and dwell in your cities, which you hold.”
Sed et omnes Judæi qui erant in Moab,So then, all the Jews, who were in Moab,et in filiis Ammon, and among the sons of Ammon,et in Idumæa,and in Idumea,et in universis regionibus, and in all the regions, audito quod dedisset rex Babylonis reliquias in Judæa,when they had heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judea, and that he had made Gedaliah,et quod præposuisset super eos Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over them,
reversi sunt, all the Jews, inquam,I say, omnes Judæi de universis locis ad quæ profugerant, returned from all the places to which they had fled,et venerunt in terram Juda ad Godoliam in Masphath, and they came into the land of Judah,et collegerunt vinumto Gedaliah at Mizpah.et messem multam nimis. And they gathered wine and an exceedingly great harvest.
Johanan autem filius Caree,Then Johanan, the son of Kareah,et omnes principes exercitus qui dispersi fuerant in regionibus, and all the leaders of the army, who had been dispersed in the regions, venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.
et dixerunt ei:And they said to him:Scito quod Baalis, rex filiorum Ammon,“Know that Baalis, the king of the sons of Ammon, misit Ismahel filium Nathaniæ percutere animam tuam.has sent Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, to strike down your life.”Et non credidit eis Godolias filius Ahicam. And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, did not believe them.
Johanan autem filius Caree dixit ad Godoliam seorsum in Masphath,But Johanan, the son of Kareah, spoke to Gedaliah, loquens: Ibo,separately, at Mizpah,et percutiam Ismahel filium Nathaniæ,saying: “I will go, and I will strike down Ishmael, nullo sciente, the son of Nethaniah,ne interficiat animam tuam, without anyone knowing; otherwise he may kill you,et dissipentur omnes Judæi qui congregati sunt ad te,and all the Jews will be scattered who have been gathered to you,et peribunt reliquiæ Juda.and the remnant of Judah will perish.”
Et ait Godolias filius Ahicam ad Johanan filium Caree:And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, said to Johanan,Noli facere verbum hoc:the son of Kareah: “Do not do this word.falsum enim tu loqueris de Ismahel. For what you have said about Ishmael is false.”
