Quod factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam contra gentes. The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles,
Ad Ægyptum, about Egypt, adversum exercitum Pharaonis Nechao regis Ægypti, against the army of Pharaoh Neco, the king of Egypt, qui erat juxta fluvium Euphraten in Charcamis, which was beside the river Euphrates at Carchemish, quem percussit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, which Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, struck down,in quarto anno Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda.in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah:
Præparate scutum et clypeum,“‘Prepare the heavy and the light shield,et procedite ad bellum.and advance to war!
Jungite equos,Harness the horses,et ascendite, equites:and let the horsemen climb upon them!state in galeis,Stand forth with helmets!polite lanceas,Sharpen the lances!induite vos loricis.Clothe yourselves in armor!’
Quid igitur? And what is next?vidi ipsos pavidos,I have seen them terrified,et terga vertentes, and turning their backs, fortes eorum cæsos:their strong ones cut down.fugerunt conciti,They have fled in disordernec respexerunt:and have not looked back.terror undique,Terror on every side, ait Dominus.says the Lord.
Non fugiat velox,Let not the swift take flight;nec salvari se putet fortis:let not the strong ones think to save themselves.ad aquilonem juxta flumen Euphraten victi sunt,They have been conquered and ruined, toward the north,et ruerunt.near the river Euphrates.
Quis est iste,Who is this, qui quasi flumen ascendit, who ascends like a flood,et veluti fluviorum intumescunt gurgites ejus?and whose streams swell up, like those of the rivers?
Ægyptus fluminis instar ascendit,Egypt ascends in the form of a river,et velut flumina movebuntur fluctus ejus, and its waves will be moved like those of a river.et dicet:And he will say:Ascendens operiam terram:‘I will ascend and cover the earth!perdam civitatem, et habitatores ejus.I will perish the city and its inhabitants!’
Ascendite equos,Mount the horses,et exsultate in curribus, et procedant fortes, and exult upon chariots, and let the strong ones advance:Æthiopia et Libyes tenentes scutum, the Ethiopians, and the Libyans, who hold the heavy shield,et Lydii arripientes et jacientes sagittas.and the Lydians, who grasp and shoot arrows.
Dies autem ille Domini Dei exercituum dies ultionis,For this is the day of the Lord, the God of hosts, a day of vengeance,ut sumat vindictam de inimicis suis:so that he may vindicate himself of his enemies.devorabit gladius,The sword will devour,et saturabitur, and be satiated,et inebriabitur sanguine eorum:and be inebriated with their blood. For there is a victim of the Lord, victima enim Domini Dei exercituum in terra aquilonis juxta flumen Euphraten.the God of hosts, in the land of the north, beside the river Euphrates.
Ascende in Galaad,Ascend to Gilead,et tolle resinam, and take its balm, virgo filia Ægypti:O virgin daughter of Egypt!frustra multiplicas medicamina:It is in vain that you multiply medicines;sanitas non erit tibi.there will be no health for you!
Audierunt gentes ignominiam tuam,The nations have heard of your disgrace,et ululatus tuus replevit terram:and your wailing has filled the earth.quia fortis impegit in fortem,For the strong have stumbled against the strong,et ambo pariter conciderunt.and both have fallen together.”
Verbum quod locutus est Dominus ad Jeremiam prophetam,The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, super eo quod venturus esset Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, concerning how Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,et percussurus terram Ægypti:would arrive and strike the land of Egypt:
Annuntiate Ægypto,“Announce it to Egypt,et auditum facite in Magdalo, and make it heard in Migdol,et resonet in Memphis, and let it resonate in Memphiset in Taphnis:and in Tahpanhes.dicite:Say this:Sta,Standet præpara te,and prepare yourself!quia devorabit gladius ea quæ per circuitum tuum sunt. For the sword will devour everything around you.
Quare computruit fortis tuus? Why have your strong ones decayed?non stetit,They have not stood firm, quoniam Dominus subvertit eum.because the Lord has overthrown them.
Multiplicavit ruentes,He has multiplied those in ruin, ceciditque vir ad proximum suum, and each man has fallen beside his neighbor.et dicent:And they will say:Surge,‘Rise up,et revertamur ad populum nostrum, and let us return to our own peopleet ad terram nativitatis nostræ,and to the land of our nativity,a facie gladii columbæ.away from the face of the sword of the dove.
Vocate nomen Pharaonis regis Ægypti:Call the name of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt:tumultum adduxit tempus.‘Time has brought tumult.’
Vivo ego,As I live, inquit Rex (Dominus exercituum nomen ejus),says the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts, quoniam sicut Thabor in montibus, just as Tabor is among the mountains,et sicut Carmelus in mari, veniet.and just as Carmel is beside the sea, so will he come.
Vasa transmigrationis fac tibi,Equip yourself for the transmigration, habitatrix filia Ægypti:O daughter who inhabits Egypt.quia Memphis in solitudinem erit,For Memphis will be in desolation,et deseretur, and it will be desertedet inhabitabilis erit.and uninhabited.
Vitula elegans atque formosa Ægyptus,Egypt is like a stately and finely-formed calf.stimulator ab aquilone veniet ei.The one who will goad her will come from the north.
Mercenarii quoque ejus,Her hired hands also, qui versabantur in medio ejus quasi vituli saginati, who move within her midst, versi sunt, like fatted calves have been turned back,et fugerunt simul, and they have fled at the same time, nec stare potuerunt:and they are not able to stand firm.quia dies interfectionis eorum venit super eos,For the day of their passing away has overwhelmed them;tempus visitationis eorum.it is the time of their visitation.
Vox ejus quasi æris sonabit:Her voice will sound out like brass.quoniam cum exercitu properabunt,For they will rush forward with an army,et cum securibus venient ei quasi cædentes ligna.and with axes they will come against her, like those who chop wood.
Succiderunt saltum ejus,They have cut down her forest, ait Dominus, says the Lord, qui supputari non potest:which was not able to be counted.multiplicati sunt super locustas,They have been multiplied more than locusts,et non est eis numerus.and they are without number.
Confusa est filia Ægypti,The daughter of Egypt has been confounded,et tradita in manu populi aquilonis.and she has been delivered into the hand of the people of the north.
Dixit Dominus exercituum,The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,Deus Israël:said: Behold,Ecce ego visitabo super tumultum Alexandriæ,I will visit against the tumult of Alexandria,et super Pharaonem, and against Pharaoh,et super Ægyptum, and against Egypt,et super deos ejus, and against her gods,et super reges ejus, and against her kings,et super Pharaonem, and against Pharaoh,et super eos qui confidunt in eo:and against those who trust in him.
et dabo eos in manu quærentium animam eorum,And I will give them over to the hand of those who seek their lives,et in manu Nabuchodonosor regis Babylonis, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,et in manu servorum ejus:and into the hand of his servants.et post hæc habitabitur sicut diebus pristinis,And after this, it shall be inhabited, just as in the former days, ait Dominus.says the Lord.
Et tu ne timeas,And as for you, my servant Jacob, serve meus Jacob, you should not be afraid,et ne paveas, Israël:and you should not dread, quia ecce ego salvum te faciam de longinquo,O Israel. For behold, I will bring your salvation from afar,et semen tuum de terra captivitatis tuæ:and your offspring from the land of your captivity.et revertetur Jacob, et requiescet,And Jacob will return and have rest,et prosperabitur, and he will prosper.et non erit qui exterreat eum.And there will be no one who may terrify him.
Et tu noli timere, serve meus Jacob,And as for you, my servant Jacob, ait Dominus,do not be afraid, quia tecum ego sum:says the Lord. For I am with you.quia ego consumam cunctas gentes ad quas ejeci te,For I will consume all the nations to which I have cast you out.te vero non consumam:Yet truly, I will not consume you.sed castigabo te in judicio,Instead, I will chastise you in judgment, nec quasi innocenti parcam tibi.but neither will I spare you, as if you were innocent.”
