Ad filios Ammon.Against the sons of Ammon.Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Numquid non filii sunt Israël,“Does Israel have no sons?aut hæres non est ei?Or is there no heir for him?cur igitur hæreditate possedit Melchom Gad,Then why has Milcom possessed the inheritance of Gad,et populus ejus in urbibus ejus habitavit?and why have his people lived in his cities?
Ideo ecce dies veniunt,Therefore, behold, the days are approaching, dicit Dominus, says the Lord,et auditum faciam super Rabbath filiorum Ammon fremitum prælii, when I will cause the noise of battle to be heard over Rabbah of the sons of Ammon.et erit in tumultum dissipata,And it will be scattered into a tumult, filiæque ejus igni succendentur, and her daughters will be burned with fire.et possidebit Israël possessores suos,And Israel shall possess those who had possessed him,ait Dominus.says the Lord.
Ulula,Wail,Hesebon,O Heshbon!quoniam vastata est Hai;For Ai has been devastated.clamate,Cry out, filiæ Rabbath:O daughters of Rabbah!accingite vos ciliciis,Wrap yourselves with haircloth.plangite et circuite per sepes,Mourn and circle the hedges.quoniam Melchom in transmigrationem ducetur,For Milcom will be led into the transmigration:sacerdotes ejus et principes ejus simul.his priests and his leaders together.
Quid gloriaris in vallibus? Why have you gloried in the valleys?defluxit vallis tua,Your valley has flowed away, filia delicata,O delicate daughter,quæ confidebas in thesauris tuis, for you had confidence in your treasures,et dicebas:and you were saying,Quis veniet ad me?‘Who can approach me?’
Ecce ego inducam super te terrorem,Behold, I will lead a terror over you,ait Dominus Deus exercituum, says the Lord, the God of hosts,ab omnibus qui sunt in circuitu tuo:from those who are all around you. And you will be dispersed,et dispergemini singuli a conspectu vestro, nec erit qui congreget fugientes.each one from before your sight. There will be no one who will gather together those who are fleeing.
Et post hæc reverti faciam captivos filiorum Ammon,And after this, I will cause the captives of the sons of Ammon to return, ait Dominus.says the Lord.”

Fugite,Fleeet terga vertite;and turn your backs!descendite in voraginem,Descend into the chasm, habitatores Dedan:O inhabitants of Dedan!quoniam perditionem Esau adduxi super eum,For I have brought the perdition of Esau over him, tempus visitationis ejus.the time of his visitation.
Si vindemiatores venissent super te,If those who gather grapes had passed by you,non reliquissent racemum:would they not have left behind a cluster?si fures in nocte rapuissent quod sufficeret sibi.If there were thieves in the night, they would seize what was enough for themselves.
Ego vero discooperui Esau:Yet truly, revelavi abscondita ejus,I have stripped Esau bare.et celari non poterit:I have revealed his secrets, vastatum est semen ejus, and he is not able to be concealed.et fratres ejus,His offspring has been devastated,et vicini ejus, with his brothers and his neighbors,et non erit.and he himself will not exist.
Relinque pupillos tuos:Leave behind your orphans.ego faciam eos vivere:I will make sure that they live.et viduæ tuæ in me sperabunt. And your widows will hope in me.”

Auditum audivi a Domino,I have heard a report from the Lord,et legatus ad gentes missus est:and a legate has been sent to the nations:Congregamini,‘Gather yourselves together,et venite contra eam,and go forth against her,et consurgamus in prælium.and let us rise up to battle.’
Ecce enim parvulum dedi te in gentibus,For behold, I have made you little among the nations, contemptibilem inter homines.contemptible among men.
Arrogantia tua decepit te,Your arrogance has deceived you,et superbia cordis tui,by the pride of your heart, qui habitas in cavernis petræ,you who live in the caverns of the rocket apprehendere niteris altitudinem collis:and who strive to take hold of the height of the hill.cum exaltaveris quasi aquila nidum tuum,But even if you make your nest like that of an eagle, inde detraham te,I will pull you down from there, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Et erit Idumæa deserta:And Idumea will be a desert.omnis qui transibit per eam stupebit,Everyone who passes by it will be stupefiedet sibilabit super omnes plagas ejus.and will hiss over all its wounds.

Ecce quasi leo ascendet de superbia Jordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam,Behold, he will ascend like a lion from the arrogance of the Jordan, against the robust beauty.quia subito currere faciam eum ad illam. For I will cause him to rush against her suddenly.Et quis erit electus,And who will be the elect one, quem præponam ei? quis enim similis mei?whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me?et quis sustinebit me?And who can endure me?et quis est iste pastor, qui resistat vultui meo?And who is that pastor who can withstand my countenance?
Propterea audite consilium Domini quod iniit de Edom,Because of this, listen to the counsel of the Lord, which he has undertaken concerning Edom,et cogitationes ejus quas cogitavit de habitatoribus Theman:and to his thoughts, which he has devised concerning the inhabitants of Teman. Certainly,si non dejecerint eos parvuli gregis, the little ones of the flock will cast them down, nisi dissipaverint cum eis habitaculum eorum.unless they scatter them with their habitation.
A voce ruinæ eorum commota est terra; The earth has been shaken at the noise of their destruction.clamor in mari Rubro auditus est vocis ejus. The outcry of their voice has been heard at the Red Sea.

Quomodo dereliquerunt civitatem laudabilem,How could they have abandoned the praiseworthy city, urbem lætitiæ?the city of rejoicing?
Ideo cadent juvenes ejus in plateis ejus,For this reason, her young men will fall in her streets.et omnes viri prælii conticescent in die illa,And all the men of battle will be silenced in that day,ait Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.

et inducam super Ælam quatuor ventos a quatuor plagis cæli,And I will lead the four winds over Elam, from the four corners of heaven.et ventilabo eos in omnes ventos istos,And I will scatter them into all these winds.et non erit gens ad quam non perveniant profugi Ælam. And there will be no nation to which the fugitives of Elam will not travel.
Et pavere faciam Ælam coram inimicis suis,And I will cause Elam to be terrified before their enemies and in the sight of those who seek their life.et in conspectu quærentium animam eorum:And I will lead an evil over them,et adducam super eos malum, the wrath of my fury, iram furoris mei, says the Lord.dicit Dominus,And I will send the sword after them,et mittam post eos gladium donec consumam eos.until I consume them.
Et ponam solium meum in Ælam,And I will set my throne in Elam,et perdam inde reges et principes, and I will perish the kings and princes from there, ait Dominus.says the Lord.
In novissimis autem diebus reverti faciam captivos Ælam,But in the last days, I will cause the captives of Elam to return, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”
