1Verbum quod locutus est Dominus de Babylone et de terra Chaldæorum,The word that the Lord has spoken about Babylon and about the land of the Chaldeans,in manu Jeremiæ prophetæ.by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet.
2Annuntiate in gentibus,“Announce it among the Gentiles,et auditum facite:and make it known.levate signum,Lift up a sign.prædicate,Proclaim itet nolite celare:and do not conceal it.dicite:Say this:Capta est Babylon,‘Babylon has been captured.confusus est Bel,Bel has been confounded.victus est Merodach,Merodach has been conquered.confusa sunt sculptilia ejus,Their graven things have been confounded.superata sunt idola eorum.Their idols have not survived.’
3Quoniam ascendit contra eam gens ab aquilone,For a nation has ascended against her from the north,quæ ponet terram ejus in solitudinem,which will set her land in desolation.et non erit qui habitet in ea ab homine usque ad pecus:And there will be no one who may live within it,et moti sunt,from man even to beast.et abierunt.For they have been removed and have gone away.
4In diebus illis, et in tempore illo,In those days and in that time, says the Lord,ait Dominus, venient filii Israël ipsi et filii Juda simul:the sons of Israel will advance, they and the sons of Judah together.ambulantes et flentes properabunt,Weeping as they walk, they will hurry on,et Dominum Deum suum quærent:and they will seek the Lord their God.
5in Sion interrogabunt viam,They will ask the way to Zion;huc facies eorum:their faces will be set toward this place.venient,They will arriveet apponentur ad Dominum fœdere sempiterno,and will be joined to the Lord by an everlasting covenant,quod nulla oblivione delebitur.which nothing will wipe away into oblivion.
6Grex perditus factus est populus meus:My people have become a lost flock.pastores eorum seduxerunt eos,Their shepherds have led them astrayfeceruntque vagari in montibus:and have caused them to wander in the mountains.de monte in collem transierunt;They have crossed from mountain to hill.obliti sunt cubilis sui.They have forgotten their resting place.
7Omnes qui invenerunt comederunt eos,All whom they have found, they have devoured.et hostes eorum dixerunt:And their enemies have said:Non peccavimus:‘We have not sinned.pro eo quod peccaverunt Domino decori justitiæ,For it is they who have sinned against the Lord, the beauty of justice,et exspectationi patrum eorum Domino.and against the Lord, the hope of their fathers.’
8Recedite de medio Babylonis,Withdraw from the midst of Babylon,et de terra Chaldæorum egredimini,and go forth from the land of the Chaldeans.et estote quasi hædi ante gregem.And be like young goats before the flock.
9Quoniam ecce ego suscito,For behold, I am raising up,et adducam in Babylonem congregationem gentium magnarum de terra aquilonis,and I will lead against Babylon, a congregation of great nations from the land of the north.et præparabuntur adversus eam,And they will be prepared against her,et inde capietur:and from there she will be taken.sagitta ejus quasi viri fortis interfectoris:Their arrows, like those of a strong man, a killer,non revertetur vacua.will not return empty.
10Et erit Chaldæa in prædam:And Chaldea will become a prey.omnes vastantes eam replebuntur,All who lay waste to her will be filled,ait Dominus.says the Lord.
11Quoniam exsultatis,For you exultet magna loquimini,and you speak great things,diripientes hæreditatem meam:plundering my inheritance.quoniam effusi estis sicut vituli super herbam,For you have spread out like calves upon the grass,et mugistis sicut tauri:and you have bellowed like bulls.
12confusa est mater vestra nimis,Your mother has been exceedingly shamed,et adæquata pulveri,and she who bore you has become equal to the dust.quæ genuit vos:Behold,ecce novissima erit in gentibus,she will be the last among the nations,deserta,a desert,invia,impassableet arens.and dry.
13Ab ira Domini non habitabitur,By the wrath of the Lord, it will not be inhabited.sed redigetur tota in solitudinem:Instead, it will be entirely desolate.omnis qui transibit per Babylonem stupebit, et sibilabit super universis plagis ejus.Everyone who passes by Babylon will be stupefied and will hiss over all her wounds.
14Præparamini contra Babylonem per circuitum,Prepare yourselves against Babylon, on every side,omnes qui tenditis arcum:all you who bend the bow.debellate eam,Make war against her!non parcatis jaculis,You should not spare the arrows,quia Domino peccavit.for she has sinned against the Lord.
15Clamate adversus eam,Cry out against her!ubique dedit manum:For where she has put forth a hand,ceciderunt fundamenta ejus,her foundations have fallen,destructi sunt muri ejus,her walls have been destroyed.quoniam ultio Domini est:For it is the vengeance of the Lord.ultionem accipite de ea:Take vengeance against her!sicut fecit,Just as she has done,facite ei.do so to her.
16Disperdite satorem de Babylone,Destroy the founder from Babylon,et tenentem falcem in tempore messis:and the one who holds the sickle in the time of harvest.a facie gladii columbæ unusquisque ad populum suum convertetur,Before the face of the sword of the dove, each one will turn back to his people,et singuli ad terram suam fugient.and every one will flee to his own land.
17Grex dispersus Israël:Israel is a scattered flock.leones ejecerunt eum.The lions have driven him away.Primus comedit eum rex Assur:First, the king of Assyria devoured him. And last,iste novissimus exossavit eum Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis.this Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, has taken away his bones.
18Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Ecce ego visitabo regem Babylonis et terram ejus,Behold, I will visit the king of Babylon and his land,sicut visitavi regem Assur:just as I have visited the king of Assyria.
19et reducam Israël ad habitaculum suum:And I will lead back Israel to his habitation.et pascetur Carmelum et Basan,And he will pasture on Carmel and Bashan,et in monte Ephraim et Galaad saturabitur anima ejus.and his soul will be satiated at mount Ephraim and Gilead.
20In diebus illis,In those days and at that time,et in tempore illo,says the Lord,ait Dominus,the iniquity of Israel will be sought,quæretur iniquitas Israël,and there will be none.et non erit,And the sin of Judah will be sought,et peccatum Juda,and none will be found.et non invenietur:For I will be forgiving to them,quoniam propitius ero eis quos reliquero.whom I will leave behind.
21Super terram dominantium ascende,Ascend against the land of the rulers,et super habitatores ejus visita:and visit against its inhabitants!dissipa,Scatteret interfice quæ post eos sunt,and destroy whatever has been left behind them,ait Dominus,says the Lord,et fac juxta omnia quæ præcepi tibi.and act according to all that I have instructed you.
22Vox belli in terra,A voice of war in the land,et contritio magna.and great destruction!
23Quomodo confractus est et contritus malleus universæ terræ?How has the mallet of the entire earth been broken and crushed?quomodo versa est in desertum Babylon in gentibus?How has Babylon been turned into a desert among the nations?
24Illaqueavi te,I have ensnared you,et capta es,and you have been captured,Babylon,O Babylon,et nesciebas:and you did not realize it.inventa es et apprehensa,You have been discovered and seized,quoniam Dominum provocasti.because you provoked the Lord.
25Aperuit Dominus thesaurum suum, et protulit vasa iræ suæ,The Lord has opened his storehouse, and he has brought forth the instruments of his wrath.quoniam opus est Domino Deo exercituum,For there is work for the Lord, the God of hosts,in terra Chaldæorum.within the land of the Chaldeans.
26Venite ad eam ab extremis finibus;Advance against her from the furthest regions!aperite ut exeant qui conculcent eam:Open, so that those who will trample her may go out!tollite de via lapides,Take stones from the road,et redigite in acervos:and gather them into piles,et interficite eam, nec sit quidquam reliquum.and destroy her. And let there be nothing left of her.
27Dissipate universos fortes ejus:Scatter all her strong ones.descendant in occisionem:Let them descend to the slaughter.væ eis,Woe to them!quia venit dies eorum,For their day has arrived,tempus visitationis eorum!the time of their visitation.
28Vox fugientium,It is the voice of those who are fleeinget eorum qui evaserunt de terra Babylonis,and of those who have escaped from the land of Babylon:ut annuntient in Sion ultionem Domini Dei nostri,to announce in Zion the revenge of the Lord our God,ultionem templi ejus.the revenge of his Temple.
29Annuntiate in Babylonem plurimis,Announce it to the many in Babylon,omnibus qui tendunt arcum:to all who bend the bow.consistite adversus eam per gyrum,Stand together against her all around,et nullus evadat:and let no one escape.reddite ei secundum opus suum:Repay her according to her work.juxta omnia quæ fecit,In accord with all that she has done,facite illi,do to her.quia contra Dominum erecta est,For she has raised herself up against the Lord,adversum Sanctum Israël.against the Holy One of Israel.
30Idcirco cadent juvenes ejus in plateis ejus,For this reason, her young men will fall in her streets.et omnes viri bellatores ejus conticescent in die illa,And all her men of war will be silenced, in that day,ait Dominus.says the Lord.
31Ecce ego ad te,Behold, I am against you,superbe!O proud one,dicit Dominus Deus exercituum:says the Lord, the God of hosts.quia venit dies tuus,For your day has arrived,tempus visitationis tuæ.the time of your visitation.
32Et cadet superbus,And the proud one will fallet corruet,and be ruined.et non erit qui suscitet eum:And there will be no one who may lift him up.et succendam ignem in urbibus ejus,And I will kindle a fire in his cities,et devorabit omnia in circuitu ejus.and it will devour everything around him.”
33Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Calumniam sustinent filii Israël, et filii Juda simul:“The sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have endured calumny together.omnes qui ceperunt eos, tenent: nolunt dimittere eos.All who have seized them are holding them and refusing to release them.
34Redemptor eorum fortis,Their redeemer is strong.Dominus exercituum nomen ejus:The Lord of hosts is his name.judicio defendet causam eorum,He will defend their case in judgment,ut exterreat terram,so that he may terrify the landet commoveat habitatores Babylonis.and disturb the inhabitants of Babylon.
35Gladius ad Chaldæos,A sword is for the Chaldeans,ait Dominus,says the Lord,et ad habitatores Babylonis,and for the inhabitants of Babylon,et ad principes,and for her leaders,et ad sapientes ejus.and for her wise ones.
36Gladius ad divinos ejus,A sword is for her diviners,qui stulti erunt:who will be fooled.gladius ad fortes illius,A sword is for her strong ones,qui timebunt.who will be afraid.
37Gladius ad equos ejus,A sword is for their horses,et ad currus ejus,and for their chariots,et ad omne vulgus quod est in medio ejus:and for all the common people who are in her midst.et erunt quasi mulieres:And they will be like women.gladius ad thesauros ejus,A sword is for her storehouses,qui diripientur.and they will be plundered.
38Siccitas super aquas ejus erit,A drought is over her waters,et arescent,and they will be dried up.quia terra sculptilium est,For it is a land of graven images,et in portentis gloriantur.and they glory in portents.
39Propterea habitabunt dracones cum faunis ficariis,Because of this, dragons will live there with the fig fauns,et habitabunt in ea struthiones:and ostriches will live in it.et non inhabitabitur ultra usque in sempiternum,And it will no longer be inhabited, even in perpetuity,nec exstruetur usque ad generationem et generationem.nor will it be raised up, even from generation to generation.
40Sicut subvertit Dominus Sodomam et Gomorrham,Just as the Lord overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,et vicinas ejus,and their neighboring towns,ait Dominus,says the Lord,non habitabit ibi vir,no man will live there,et non incolet eam filius hominis.and a son of man will not tend it.
41Ecce populus venit ab aquilone,Behold, a people arrives from the north,et gens magna,and a great nation.et reges multi consurgent a finibus terræ.And many kings will rise up from the ends of the earth.
42Arcum et scutum apprehendent:They will take up the bow and the shield.crudeles sunt,They are cruel and merciless.et immisericordes:Their voice will sound out,vox eorum quasi mare sonabit,like the sea,et super equos ascendent,and they will ride upon horses,sicut vir paratus ad prælium contra te,like a man prepared for battle against you,filia Babylon.O daughter of Babylon.
43Audivit rex Babylonis famam eorum,The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,et dissolutæ sunt manus ejus:and his hands have been weakened.angustia apprehendit eum,Anguish has overtaken him,dolor quasi parturientem.like the pains of a woman giving birth.
44Ecce quasi leo ascendet, de superbia Jordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam,Behold, he will ascend like a lion from the arrogance of the Jordan to the robust beauty.quia subito currere faciam eum ad illam.For I will cause him to rush upon her suddenly.Et quis erit electus,And who will be the elect one,quem præponam ei? quis est enim similis mei?whom I may appoint over her? For who is like me?et quis sustinebit me?And who can endure me?et quis est iste pastor, qui resistat vultui meo?And who is that pastor who can withstand my countenance?”
45Propterea audite consilium Domini quod mente concepit adversum Babylonem,Because of this, listen to the counsel of the Lord, which he has conceived in his mind against Babylon,et cogitationes ejus quas cogitavit super terram Chaldæorum:and to his thoughts, which he has devised against the land of the Chaldeans:nisi detraxerint eos parvuli gregum,“Certainly the little ones of the flocks will pull them down,nisi dissipatum fuerit cum ipsis habitaculum eorum.unless their habitation will have been destroyed with them.
46A voce captivitatis Babylonis commota est terra,At the voice of the captivity of Babylon, the earth has been moved,et clamor inter gentes auditus est.and an outcry has been heard among the nations.”
