Circuite vias Jerusalem,“Travel the streets of Jerusalem;et aspicite, and gaze,et considerate, and consider,et quærite in plateis ejus, and seek,an inveniatis virum facientem judicium,in its wide streets.et quærentem fidem:If you can find a man exercising judgment and seeking faith,et propitius ero ei.then I will be forgiving to them.
Quod si etiam:For even though they say,Vivit Dominus,‘As the Lord lives,’dixerint,in this, too,et hoc falso jurabunt.they swear falsely.”
Domine,O Lord, oculi tui respiciunt fidem:your eyes look with favor upon faith.percussisti eos,You have struck them,et non doluerunt;and they have not grieved.attrivisti eos,You have bruised them,et renuerunt accipere disciplinam:and they have refused to accept discipline.induraverunt facies suas supra petram,They have hardened their faces more than rock,et noluerunt reverti.and they are not willing to return.
Ego autem dixi:But I said:Forsitan pauperes sunt et stulti,Perhaps these are the poor and the senseless, ignorantes viam Domini, who are ignorant of the way of the Lord, judicium Dei sui.of the judgment of their God.
Ibo igitur ad optimates,Therefore, I will go to great men,et loquar eis: ipsi enim cognoverunt viam Domini, and I will speak with them. For they have known the way of the Lord, judicium Dei sui:the judgment of their God.et ecce magis hi simul confregerunt jugum; And behold, these ones have broken the yoke all the more;ruperunt vincula.they have torn apart the bonds.
Idcirco percussit eos leo de silva; For this reason, a lion from the forest has struck them down, lupus ad vesperam vastavit eos:a wolf toward evening has laid waste to them, pardus vigilans super civitates eorum:a leopard lies in wait over their cities.omnis qui egressus fuerit ex eis capietur:All who go out from there will be taken.quia multiplicatæ sunt prævaricationes eorum; For their transgressions have been multiplied;confortatæ sunt aversiones eorum.their rebellions have been strengthened.
Super quo propitius tibi esse potero?“Over which things am I able to be merciful to you?filii tui dereliquerunt me,Your sons have forsaken me,et jurant in his qui non sunt dii.and they swear by those who are not gods.Saturavi eos,I gave them everything,et mœchati sunt, and they committed adultery,et in domo meretricis luxuriabantur.and they indulged themselves in the house of the harlot.
Equi amatores et emissarii facti sunt:They have become like wild horses in heat;unusquisque ad uxorem proximi sui hinniebat.each one was neighing after his neighbor’s wife.
Numquid super his non visitabo,Shall I not visit against these things, dicit Dominus, says the Lord?et in gente tali non ulciscetur anima mea?And shall my soul not take vengeance on a nation such as this?
Ascendite muros ejus,Scale its wallset dissipate:and tear them down.consummationem autem nolite facere:But do not be willing to bring about its very end.auferte propagines ejus,Take away its plantings, quia non sunt Domini.for they are not the Lord’s.
Prævaricatione enim prævaricata est in me domus Israël,For the house of Israelet domus Juda, and the house of Judah have greatly transgressed against me,ait Dominus.says the Lord.
Negaverunt Dominum,They have denied the Lord,et dixerunt:and they have said,Non est ipse:‘It is not him,’neque veniet super nos malum:and, gladium‘Evil will not overwhelm us.et famem non videbimus. We will not see famine and the sword.’
Prophetæ fuerunt in ventum locuti,The prophets have spoken into the wind,et responsum non fuit in eis:and there was no answer with them. Therefore,hæc ergo evenient illis.these things will happen to them.”
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus exercituum:Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts:Quia locuti estis verbum istud,“Since you have spoken this word, ecce ego do verba mea in ore tuo in ignem, et populum istum in ligna, behold, I will make my words in your mouth like fire and this people like wood,et vorabit eos.and it will devour them.
Ecce ego adducam super vos gentem de longinquo,Behold, O house of Israel, I will lead over you a far away nation, domus Israël,says the Lord, ait Dominus:a robust nation, gentem robustam,an ancient nation, gentem antiquam, gentem cujus ignorabis linguam,a nation whose language you will not know, nec intelliges quid loquatur.nor will you understand what they are saying.
Pharetra ejus quasi sepulchrum patens;Their quiver is like an open sepulcher.universi fortes. They are all strong.
Et comedet segetes tuas et panem tuum; And they will consume your grain fields and your bread.devorabit filios tuos et filias tuas; They will devour your sons and your daughters.comedet gregem tuum et armenta tua; They will consume your flocks and your herds.comedet vineam tuam et ficum tuam:They will consume your vineyards and your figs.et conteret urbes munitas tuas,And with the sword,in quibus tu habes fiduciam, they will crush your fortified cities, gladio.in which you have placed your trust.
Verumtamen in diebus illis,Yet truly, in those days, ait Dominus, says the Lord, non faciam vos in consummationem.I will not bring the consummation over you.
Quod si dixeritis:And if they say,Quare fecit nobis Dominus Deus noster hæc omnia?‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’dices ad eos:You shall say to them:Sicut dereliquistis me,‘Just as you have abandoned meet servistis deo alieno in terra vestra, and have served a strange god in your own land, sic servietis alienis in terra non vestra.so will you serve strangers in a land not your own.’
Annuntiate hoc domui Jacob,Announce this to the house of Jacob,et auditum facite in Juda, and make it known in Judah, dicentes:saying:
Audi,Listen, popule stulte, qui non habes cor:O foolish people who have no heart!qui habentes oculos, non videtis; You have eyes, but you do not see,et aures, and ears,et non auditis.but you do not hear.
Me ergo non timebitis,So then, will you not fear me,ait Dominus, says the Lord.et a facie mea non dolebitis? And will you not have sorrow before my face?qui posui arenam terminum mari,I have placed the shore as a limit for the sea,præceptum sempiternum quod non præteribit:as an everlasting precept that it will not transgress.et commovebuntur,And its waves will crash,et non poterunt; et intumescent fluctus ejus, but they will not prevail; and its waves will swell,et non transibunt illud.but they will not go across.
Populo autem huic factum est cor incredulum et exasperans:But the heart of this people has become incredulous and provocative;recesserunt, et abierunt.they have turned away and departed.
Et non dixerunt in corde suo:And they have not said in their heart:Metuamus Dominum Deum nostrum,‘Let us dread the Lord our God,qui dat nobis pluviam temporaneamwho gives us the timely and the late rains,et serotinam in tempore suo,in their proper time, plenitudinem annuæ messis custodientem nobis.who guards the full measure of the yearly harvest for us.’
Iniquitates vestræ declinaverunt hæc,Your iniquities have turned these things away,et peccata vestra prohibuerunt bonum a vobis:and your sins have held back good things from you.
quia inventi sunt in populo meo impii insidiantes quasi aucupes,For the impious are found among my people;laqueos ponentesthey lie in ambush like fowlers setting snares,et pedicas ad capiendos viros.for they set traps to catch men.
Sicut decipula plena avibus,Just as a snare is full of birds, sic domus eorum plenæ dolo:so are their houses full of deceit.ideo magnificati suntAs a result,et ditati.they have become exalted and enriched.
Incrassati sunt et impinguati,They have grown stout and fat.et præterierunt sermones meos pessime. And they have transgressed my words most wickedly.Causam viduæ non judicaverunt,They have not judged the case of the widow;causam pupilli non direxerunt, they have not given guidance to the case of the orphan;et judicium pauperum non judicaverunt.and they have not judged a judgment for the poor.
Numquid super his non visitabo,Shall I not visit against these things, dicit Dominus, says the Lord?aut super gentem hujuscemodi non ulciscetur anima mea?Or shall my soul not take vengeance on a nation of this kind?
Stupor et mirabilia facta sunt in terra:Astonishing and wondrous things have been done upon the earth.
prophetæ prophetabant mendacium,The prophets have prophesied lies,et sacerdotes applaudebant manibus suis, and the priests have applauded with their hands,et populus meus dilexit talia.and my people have loved these things.Quid igitur fiet in novissimo ejus?So then, what shall be done at the very end?”
