Confortamini,“O sons of Benjamin, filii Benjamin, in medio Jerusalem:be strengthened in the midst of Jerusalem,et in Thecua clangite buccina, and sound the trumpet in Tekoa,et super Bethacarem levate vexillum, and lift up a banner over the house of Haccherem.quia malum visum est ab aquilone,For an evil has been seen from the north,et contritio magna.with great destruction.
Speciosæ et delicatæ assimilavi filiam Sion.I have compared the daughter of Zion to a beautiful and delicate woman.
Ad eam venient pastores et greges eorum; The pastors will come to her with their flocks.fixerunt in ea tentoria in circuitu:They have pitched their tents against her all around.pascet unusquisque eos qui sub manu sua sunt. Each one will feed those who are under his hand.
Sanctificate super eam bellum:‘Sanctify a war against her!consurgite,Rise up together,et ascendamus in meridie:and let us ascend at midday.’væ nobis,‘Woe to us!quia declinavit dies; For the day has declined;quia longiores factæ sunt umbræ vesperi!for the shadows of the evening have grown longer.’
Surgite,‘Rise up,et ascendamus in nocte, and let us ascend in the night,et dissipemus domus ejus.and let us destroy her houses.’”
Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:For thus says the Lord of hosts:Cædite lignum ejus,“Cut down her trees,et fundite circa Jerusalem aggerem.and build a rampart around Jerusalem.Hæc est civitas visitationis:This is the city of visitation!omnis calumnia in medio ejus.Every kind of false claim is in her midst.
Sicut frigidam fecit cisterna aquam suam,Just as a cistern makes its water cold, sic frigidam fecit malitiam suam.so has she made her wickedness cold.Iniquitas et vastitas audietur in ea,Iniquity and devastation will be heard in her;coram me semper infirmitas et plaga.sickness and wounds will be ever before me.
Erudire,O Jerusalem,Jerusalem, accept instruction,ne forte recedat anima mea a te;lest perhaps my soul may withdraw from you;ne forte ponam te desertam, lest perhaps I may set you in a desert, terram inhabitabilem.in an uninhabitable land.”
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Thus says the Lord of hosts:Usque ad racemum colligent quasi in vinea reliquias Israël.“They will gather the remnant of Israel, even as a single cluster of grapes is gathered from a vine.Converte manum tuam quasi vindemiator ad cartallum.Direct your hand, as a grape-gatherer directs his hand to the basket.
Cui loquar,To whom should I speak,et quem contestabor ut audiat?and to whom should I testify, so as to be heard?ecce incircumcisæ aures eorum,Behold, their ears are uncircumcised,et audire non possunt:and so they are unable to hear.ecce verbum Domini factum est eis in opprobrium,Behold, for them, the word of the Lord has become a disgrace.et non suscipient illud. And so they will not accept it.
Idcirco furore Domini plenus sum;For this reason, I have been filled with the fury of the Lord.laboravi sustinens.I labor to bear it.Effunde super parvulum foris,Let it be poured out upon the child outside,et super consilium juvenum simul:or upon a group of young men meeting together.vir enim cum muliere capietur; senex cum pleno dierum. For a man will be taken captive with a woman, an elder will be taken captive with one who is full of days.
Et transibunt domus eorum ad alteros,And their houses will be given over to others, agri et uxores pariter, with both their lands and their wives.quia extendam manum meam super habitantes terram,For I will extend my hand over the inhabitants of the earth, dicit Dominus:says the Lord.
a minore quippe usque ad majorem omnes avaritiæ student,Certainly, from the least of them even to the greatest, all of them practice greed.et a propheta usque ad sacerdotem cuncti faciunt dolum. And from the prophet even to the priest, all of them act with deceit.
Et curabant contritionem filiæ populi mei cum ignominia,And they healed the destruction of the daughter of my people with disgrace, dicentes:by saying:Pax,‘Peace, pax!peace.’et non erat pax.And there was no peace.
Confusi sunt,They were confounded, quia abominationem fecerunt:because they committed an abomination.quin potius confusione non sunt confusi,Or rather, they were not confounded with shame,et erubescere nescierunt.because they did not know how to blush.Quam ob rem cadent inter ruentes:For this reason, they will fall among those who are being destroyed.in tempore visitationis suæ corruent,In the time of their visitation, they will fall, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:State super vias,“Stand above the ways,et videte, and see and ask,et interrogate de semitis antiquis quæ sit via bona, about the ancient paths, as to which is the good way,et ambulate in ea:and then walk in it.et invenietis refrigerium animabus vestris. And you will find refreshment for your souls.Et dixerunt:But they said:Non ambulabimus.‘We will not walk.’
Et constitui super vos speculatores:And I appointed watchers over you, saying:Audite vocem tubæ. Et dixerunt:‘Listen for the sound of the trumpet.’ And they said:Non audiemus.‘We will not listen.’
Ideo audite, gentes,For this reason, hear,et cognosce,O Gentiles, and know, congregatio,O congregation, quanta ego faciam eis.how much I will do to them.
Audi,Hear, terra:O earth!ecce ego adducam mala super populum istum,Behold, I will lead evils over this people, fructum cogitationum ejus:as the fruits of their own thoughts.quia verba mea non audierunt,For they have not listened to my words,et legem meam projecerunt.and they have cast aside my law.
Ut quid mihi thus de Saba affertis,For what reason are you bringing me frankincense from Sheba,et calamum suave olentem de terra longinqua?and sweet smelling reeds from a far away land?Holocautomata vestra non sunt accepta,Your holocausts are not acceptable,et victimæ vestræ non placuerunt mihi.and your sacrifices are not pleasing to me.”
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus:Therefore,Ecce ego dabo in populum istum ruinas:thus says the Lord:et ruent in eis patres“Behold I will bring this people to utter ruin,et filii simul;and they will fall, vicinuswith their fathers and sons;et proximus peribunt.neighbor and relative will perish together.”
Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord: “Behold,Ecce populus venit de terra aquilonis,a people is coming from the land of the north,et gens magna consurget a finibus terræ.and a great nation will rise up from the ends of the earth.
SagittamThey will take hold of arrow and shield.et scutum arripiet:They are cruel, crudelis estand they will not take pity.et non miserebitur.Their voice will roar like the ocean.Vox ejus quasi mare sonabit:And they will climb upon horses,et super equos ascendent, for they have been prepared like men for battle,præparati quasi vir ad prælium adversum te,against you, filia Sion.O daughter of Zion.
Audivimus famam ejus;‘We have heard of their fame.dissolutæ sunt manus nostræ:Our hands have become weakened.tribulatio apprehendit nos,Tribulation has overtaken us,dolores ut parturientem.like the pains of a woman giving birth.’
Nolite exire ad agros,Do not choose to go out into the fields,et in via ne ambuletis, and you should not walk along the roadway.quoniam gladius inimici,For the swordpavor in circuitu.and the terror of the enemy is on every side.
Filia populi mei,Wrap yourself in haircloth, accingere cilicio,O daughter of my people.et conspergere cinere:And sprinkle yourself with ashes.luctum unigeniti fac tibi,Make a mourning for yourself, as for an only son, planctum amarum,a bitter lamentation:quia repente veniet vastator super nos.‘for the destroyer will overwhelm us suddenly.’
Probatorem dedi te in populo meo robustum:I have presented you as a strong tester among my people.et scies,And you will testet probabis viam eorum.and know their way.
Omnes isti principes declinantes, ambulantes fraudulenter,All these leaders who are turning away and walking deceitfully,æs et ferrum:they are brass and iron;universi corrupti sunt.they have all been corrupted.
Defecit sufflatorium; The bellows has failed;in igne consumptum est plumbum:the lead has been consumed by fire;frustra conflavit conflator, the molten metal was melted to no purpose.malitiæ enim eorum non sunt consumptæ.For their wickedness has not been consumed.
Argentum reprobum vocate eos,Call them: ‘Rejected silver.’quia Dominus projecit illos. For the Lord has cast them aside.”
