In illo tempore,“In that time, ait Dominus, says the Lord, ejicient ossa regum Juda, they will cast out the bones of the kings of Judah,et ossa principum ejus, and the bones of its leaders,et ossa sacerdotum, and the bones of the priests,et ossa prophetarum, and the bones of the prophets,et ossa eorum qui habitaverunt Jerusalem, and the bones of those who were living in Jerusalem,de sepulchris suis:from their graves.
et expandent ea ad solem,And they will spread them out before the sunet lunam, and the moonet omnem militiam cæli,and the entire army of the heavens,quæ dilexerunt, which they have loved,et quibus servierunt, and served,et post quæ ambulaverunt, and followed,et quæ quæsierunt, and which they have soughtet adoraverunt.and adored.Non colligentur,They will not be collected,et non sepelientur:and they will not be buried.in sterquilinium super faciem terræ erunt. They will be like manure upon the face of the earth.
Et eligent magis mortem quam vitam,And they will greatly prefer death to life:omnes qui residui fuerint de cognatione hac pessima, all those who will have been left from this wicked kindred,in universis locis quæ derelicta sunt, ad quæ ejeci eos,in all the forsaken places to which I will cast them out, dicit Dominus exercituum.says the Lord of hosts.
Et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus:And you will say to them: Thus says the Lord:Numquid qui cadit non resurget? He who falls, will he not rise again?et qui aversus est non revertetur? And he who has been turned away, will he not return?
Quare ergo aversus est populus iste in Jerusalem aversione contentiosa? Then why have this people in Jerusalem turned away with a contentious loathing?Apprehenderunt mendacium,They have taken hold of what is false,et noluerunt reverti.and they are not willing to return.
Attendi,I paid close attentionet auscultavi:and I listened carefully.nemo quod bonum est loquitur; No one is speaking what is good.nullus est qui agat pœnitentiam super peccato suo,There is no one who does penance for his sin, dicens:saying:Quid feci?‘What have I done?’Omnes conversi sunt ad cursum suum,They have all turned to their own course, quasi equus impetu vadens ad prælium.like a horse rushing with fury into battle.
Milvus in cælo cognovit tempus suum:The hawk in the heavens has known her time.turtur,The turtledove,et hirundo, and the swallow,et ciconia custodierunt tempus adventus sui:and the stork have kept the time of their arrival.populus autem meus non cognovit judicium Domini. But my people have not known the judgment of the Lord.
Quomodo dicitis:How can you say:Sapientes nos sumus, et lex Domini nobiscum est?‘We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us?’vere mendacium operatus est stylus mendax scribarum!Truly, the lying pen of the scribes has wrought falsehood.
Confusi sunt sapientes; The wise men have been confounded;perterriti et capti sunt:they were terrified and captured.verbum enim Domini projecerunt,For they cast aside the word of the Lord,et sapientia nulla est in eis.and there is no wisdom in them.
Propterea dabo mulieres eorum exteris, agros eorum hæredibus,Because of this, I will give their wives to outsiders and their fields to others as an inheritance.quia a minimo usque ad maximum omnes avaritiam sequuntur:For from the least, even to the greatest, they all pursue avarice;a propheta usque ad sacerdotem cuncti faciunt mendacium.from the prophet, even to the priest, they all act with deceit.
Et sanabant contritionem filiæ populi mei ad ignominiam,And they healed the destruction of the daughter of my people with disgrace, dicentes:by saying:Pax,‘Peace, pax!peace,’cum non esset pax.though there was no peace.
Confusi sunt, quia abominationem fecerunt:They have been confounded because they committed abomination.quinimmo confusione non sunt confusi,Or rather, they have not been confounded with shame,et erubescere nescierunt.for they do not know how to blush.Idcirco cadent inter corruentes:For this reason, they will fall among the fallen.in tempore visitationis suæ corruent,In the time of their visitation, they will fall, dicit Dominus.says the Lord.
Congregans congregabo eos,When gathering, I will gather them together, ait Dominus.says the Lord.Non est uva in vitibus,There are no grapes on the vine,et non sunt ficus in ficulnea:and there are no figs on the fig tree.folium defluxit,The leaves have fallen.et dedi eis quæ prætergressa sunt. And I have given them the things that have passed away.”
Quare sedemus?“Why are we sitting still?convenite,Assemble,et ingrediamur civitatem munitam, and let us enter the fortified city,et sileamus ibi:and let us remain silent there.quia Dominus Deus noster silere nos fecit,For the Lord our God has brought us to silence,et potum dedit nobis aquam fellis:and he has given us the water of gall as a drink.peccavimus enim Domino. For we have sinned against the Lord.
Exspectavimus pacem, et non erat bonum:We expected peace, but there was nothing good.tempus medelæ,We expected a time of health,et ecce formido.and behold, dread.”
A Dan auditus est fremitus equorum ejus;“From Dan,a voce hinnituum pugnatorum ejus commota est omnis terra:the snorting of his horses was heard;et venerunt, the entire land was shaken by the voice of the neighing of his fighters.et devoraverunt terram et plenitudinem ejus; And they arrived and devoured the land and its plenitude, urbem et habitatores ejus.the city and its inhabitants.
Quia ecce ego mittam vobis serpentes regulos,For behold, I will send among you serpents, king snakes, quibus non est incantatio:against which there is no charm,et mordebunt vos,and they will bite you,ait Dominus.says the Lord.
Dolor meus super dolorem,My sorrow is beyond sorrow;in me cor meum mœrens.my heart mourns within me.
Ecce vox clamoris filiæ populi mei de terra longinqua:Behold, the voice of the daughter of my people from a far away land.Numquid Dominus non est in Sion?Is the Lord not with Zion, aut rex ejus non est in ea?and is her king not within her?Quare ergo me ad iracundiam concitaverunt in sculptilibus suis,Then why have they provoked me to wrath by their graven images,et in vanitatibus alienis?and by their strange vanities?
Transiit messis,The harvest has passed by,finita est æstas, the summer is at an end,et nos salvati non sumus.and we have not been saved.
Super contritione filiæ populi mei contritus sum,Over the destruction of the daughter of my people,et contristatus:I am contrite and saddened;stupor obtinuit me.astonishment has taken hold of me.
Numquid resina non est in Galaad? Is there no balm in Gilead?aut medicus non est ibi?Or is there no physician there?quare igitur non est obducta cicatrix filiæ populi mei? Then why has the wound of the daughter of my people not been closed?”
