Quis dabit capiti meo aquam,“Who will provide water for my head,et oculis meis fontem lacrimarum, and a fount of tears for my eyes?et plorabo die ac nocte interfectos filiæ populi mei?And then I will weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people.

Quis dabit me in solitudine diversorium viatorum,Who will provide me, in the wilderness, with a lodging place along the road?et derelinquam populum meum,And then I will forsake my people,et recedam ab eis?and withdraw from them.quia omnes adulteri sunt,For they are all adulterers,cœtus prævaricatorum.a union of transgressors.

Et extenderunt linguam suam quasi arcum mendacii et non veritatis:And they have bent their tongue, like a bow, to send forth lies and not the truth.confortati sunt in terra,They have been strengthened upon the earth.quia de malo ad malum egressi sunt,And they have gone from one evil to another.et me non cognoverunt,But they have not known me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.

Unusquisque se a proximo suo custodiat,Let each one guard himself against his neighbor,et in omni fratre suo non habeat fiduciam:and let him have no trust in any brother of his.quia omnis frater supplantans supplantabit,For every brother will utterly overthrow,et omnis amicus fraudulenter incedet.and every friend will advance deceitfully.

Et vir fratrem suum deridebit,And a man will deride his brother,et veritatem non loquentur:and they will not speak the truth.docuerunt enim linguam suam loqui mendacium; For they have taught their tongue to speak lies;ut inique agerent laboraverunt.they have labored to commit iniquity.

Habitatio tua in medio doli:Your habitation is in the midst of deceit.in dolo renuerunt scire me,In their deceitfulness, they have refused to know me,dicit Dominus.says the Lord.”

Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:Because of this, thus says the Lord of hosts: “Behold,Ecce ego conflabo,I will refine them,et probabo eos:and I will test them.quid enim aliud faciam a facie filiæ populi mei?For what else can I do before the face of the daughter of my people?

Sagitta vulnerans lingua eorum,Their tongue is a wounding arrow;dolum locuta est.it has spoken deceit. In ore suo pacem cum amico suo loquitur,With his mouth, he speaks peace with his friend,et occulte ponit ei insidias.and then he secretly lies in ambush for him.

Numquid super his non visitabo,Shall I not visit upon them concerning these things, dicit Dominus, says the Lord?aut in gente hujusmodi non ulciscetur anima mea?Or shall my soul not take vengeance on a nation of this kind?

Super montes assumam fletum ac lamentum,I will take up weeping and lamentation over the mountains,et super speciosa deserti planctum, and mourning over the beautiful places in the desert.quoniam incensa sunt, eo quod non sit vir pertransiens,For they have been scorched because no man is passing through them.et non audierunt vocem possidentis:And they have not heard the voice of any occupant.a volucre cæli usque ad pecora transmigraverunt et recesserunt. From the birds of the air, even to the cattle, they have migrated and withdrawn.

Et dabo Jerusalem in acervos arenæ,And I will make Jerusalem into piles of sandet cubilia draconum:and into a lair for serpents.et civitates Juda dabo in desolationem,And I will make the cities of Judah desolate,eo quod non sit habitator.so much so that there will be no inhabitant.

Quis est vir sapiens qui intelligat hoc,Who is the wise man who understands this,et ad quem verbum oris Domini fiat, and to whom a word from the mouth of the Lord may be given,ut annuntiet istud,so that he may announce this:quare perierit terra, why the land has perished,et exusta sit quasi desertum, and has been scorched like a desert,eo quod non sit qui pertranseat?so much so that no one passes through it?”

Et dixit Dominus:And the Lord said:Quia dereliquerunt legem meam quam dedi eis,“It is because they have abandoned my law, which I gave to them,et non audierunt vocem meam, and they have not listened to my voice,et non ambulaverunt in ea,and they have not walked by it.

et abierunt post pravitatem cordis sui,And they have gone after the depravity of their own heart,et post Baalim, and after Baal, quod didicerunt a patribus suis:which they learned from their fathers.”

idcirco hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,For this reason, thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Ecce ego cibabo populum istum absinthio,“Behold, I will feed this people with absinthe,et potum dabo eis aquam fellis.and I will give them the water of gall to drink.

Et dispergam eos in gentibus quas non noverunt ipsiAnd I will disperse them among nations,et patres eorum, which they and their fathers have not known.et mittam post eos gladium,And I will send the sword after them, donec consumantur.until they are consumed.”

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum,Thus says the Lord of hosts,Deus Israël:the God of Israel:Contemplamini,“Consideret vocate lamentatrices, and call upon the women mourners,et veniant:and let them approach.et ad eas quæ sapientes sunt mittite,And send to those women who are wise,et properent:and let them hurry.

festinent, et assumant super nos lamentum:‘Let them hasten to take up a lamentation over us.deducant oculi nostri lacrimas,Let our eyes shed tears,et palpebræ nostræ defluant aquis.and our eyelids run with water.’

Quia vox lamentationis audita est de Sion:For a voice of lamentation has been heard from Zion:Quomodo vastati sumus, et confusi vehementer?‘How is it that we have been devastated and greatly confounded?quia dereliquimus terram; quoniam dejecta sunt tabernacula nostra. Our tabernacles have been thrown down because we have forsaken the land.’”

Audite ergo,“Therefore, listen, mulieres, verbum Domini,O women, to the word of the Lord!et assumant aures vestræ sermonem oris ejus,And let your ears take up the word of his mouth.et docete filias vestras lamentum,And teach your daughters to lament.et unaquæque proximam suam planctum:And let each one teach her neighbor to mourn:

quia ascendit mors per fenestras nostras;‘For death has climbed through our windows.ingressa est domos nostras, disperdere parvulos deforis,It has entered our houses to perish the little children from the outdoors, juvenes de plateis.the youths from the streets.’”

Loquere:“Speak:Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Et cadet morticinum hominis quasi stercus super faciem regionis,And the corpses of men will fall like manure over the face of the countryside,et quasi fœnum post tergum metentis, and like hay behind the back of the reaper,et non est qui colligat.and there will be no one to gather it.”

Hæc dicit Dominus:Thus says the Lord:Non glorietur sapiens in sapientia sua,“The wise man should not glory in his wisdom,et non glorietur fortis in fortitudine sua,and the strong man should not glory in his strength,et non glorietur dives in divitiis suis:and the rich man should not glory in his riches.

sed in hoc glorietur, qui gloriatur,But he who glories should glory in this:scire et nosse me,to know me and to know me well.quia ego sum Dominus qui facio misericordiam, et judicium,For I am the Lord, who accomplishes mercy and judgment and justice upon the earth.et justitiam in terra: hæc enim placent mihi,For these things are pleasing to me,ait Dominus.says the Lord.

Ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus,Behold, the days are approaching,et visitabo super omnem qui circumcisum habet præputium, says the Lord, when I will visit upon all who are uncircumcised:

super Ægyptum, upon Egypt,et super Juda, and upon Judah,et super Edom, and upon Edom,et super filios Ammon, and upon the sons of Ammon,et super Moab;and upon Moab,et super omnes qui attonsi sunt in comam, and upon all who have shaved off their hair, habitantes in deserto:living in the desert.quia omnes gentes habent præputium,For all the nations are uncircumcised in body, omnis autem domus Israël incircumcisi sunt corde.but all the house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”
