Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam,Then six days before the Passover, Jesus went to Bethania, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, where Lazarus had died, quem suscitavit Jesus.whom Jesus raised up.

Fecerunt autem ei cœnam ibi,And they made a dinner for him there.et Martha ministrabat,And Martha was ministering.Lazarus vero unus erat ex discumbentibus cum eo.And truly, Lazarus was one of those who were sitting at table with him.

Maria ergo accepit libram unguenti nardi pistici pretiosi,And then Mary took twelve ounces of pure spikenard ointment, very precious,et unxit pedes Jesu, et extersit pedes ejus capillis suis:and she anointed the feet of Jesus, and she wiped his feet with her hair.et domus impleta est ex odore unguenti. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

Dixit ergo unus ex discipulis ejus,Then one of his disciples,Judas Iscariotes,Judas Iscariot, qui erat eum traditurus:who was soon to betray him, said,

Quare hoc unguentum non veniit trecentis denariis,“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denariiet datum est egenis?and given to the needy?”

Dixit autem hoc,Now he said this, non quia de egenis pertinebat ad eum, sed quia fur erat, not out of concern for the needy, but because he was a thief and,et loculos habens, since he held the purse,ea quæ mittebantur, portabat.he used to carry what was put into it.

Dixit ergo Jesus:But Jesus said:Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud.“Permit her, so that she may keep it against the day of my burial.

Pauperes enim semper habetis vobiscum:For the poor, you have with you always.me autem non semper habetis. But me, you do always not have.”

Cognovit ergo turba multa ex Judæis quia illic est,Now a great multitude of the Jews knew that he was in that place,et venerunt, and so they came, non propter Jesum tantum, not so much because of Jesus, sed ut Lazarum viderent, but so that they might see Lazarus, quem suscitavit a mortuis.whom he had raised from the dead.

Cogitaverunt autem principes sacerdotum ut et Lazarum interficerent:And the leaders of the priests planned to put Lazarus to death also.

quia multi propter illum abibant ex Judæis,For many of the Jews, because of him,et credebant in Jesum.were going away and were believing in Jesus.

In crastinum autem,Then, on the next day, turba multa quæ venerat ad diem festum, the great crowd that had come to the feast day,cum audissent quia venit Jesus Jerosolymam, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

acceperunt ramos palmarum, took branches of palm trees,et processerunt obviam ei,and they went ahead to meet him.et clamabant:And they were crying out:Hosanna,“Hosanna!benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini,Blessed is he who arrives in the name of the Lord, rex Israël.the king of Israel!”

Et invenit Jesus asellum,And Jesus found a small donkey,et sedit super eum,and he sat upon it,sicut scriptum est:just as it is written:

Noli timere,“Do not be afraid, filia Sion:daughter of Zion.ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinæ.Behold, your king arrives, sitting on the colt of a donkey.”

Hæc non cognoverunt discipuli ejus primum:At first, his disciples did not realize these things.sed quando glorificatus est Jesus,But when Jesus was glorified, tunc recordati sunt quia hæc erant scripta de eo,then they remembered that these things were written about him,et hæc fecerunt ei.and that these things happened to him.

Testimonium ergo perhibebat turba,And so the crowd that had been with him,quæ erat cum eo quando Lazarum vocavit de monumento, when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead,et suscitavit eum a mortuis.offered testimony.

Propterea et obviam venit ei turba:Because of this, too, the crowd went out to meet him.quia audierunt fecisse hoc signum. For they heard that he had accomplished this sign.

Pharisæi ergo dixerunt ad semetipsos:Therefore, the Pharisees said among themselves:Videtis quia nihil proficimus?“Do you see that we are accomplishing nothing?ecce mundus totus post eum abiit.Behold, the entire world has gone after him.”

Erant autem quidam gentiles, ex his qui ascenderant ut adorarent in die festo. Now there were certain Gentiles among those who went up so that they might worship on the feast day.

Hi ergo accesserunt ad Philippum,Therefore, these approached Philip, qui erat a Bethsaida Galilææ,who was from Bethsaida of Galilee,et rogabant eum, dicentes:and they petitioned him,Domine, saying:volumus Jesum videre.“Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

Venit Philippus,Philip went and told Andrew.et dicit Andreæ;Next,Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Jesu.Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

Jesus autem respondit eis,But Jesus answered them by saying:dicens: Venit hora, ut clarificetur Filius hominis.“The hour arrives when the Son of man shall be glorified.

Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis, amen, nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram,I say to you, mortuum fuerit, unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,

ipsum solum manet:it remains alone.si autem mortuum fuerit,But if it dies, multum fructum affert.it yields much fruit.Qui amat animam suam,Whoever loves his life, perdet eam;will lose it.et qui odit animam suam in hoc mundo,And whoever hates his life in this world,in vitam æternam custodit eam.preserves it unto eternal life.

Si quis mihi ministrat,If anyone serves me,me sequatur, let him follow me.et ubi sum ego,And where I am,illic et minister meus erit.there too my minister shall be.Si quis mihi ministraverit,If anyone has served me,honorificabit eum Pater meus.my Father will honor him.

Nunc anima mea turbata est.Now my soul is troubled.Et quid dicam? And what should I say?Pater,Father, salvifica me ex hac hora.save me from this hour?Sed propterea veni in horam hanc:But it is for this reason that I came to this hour.

Pater,Father, clarifica nomen tuum.glorify your name!”Venit ergo vox de cælo:And then a voice came from heaven,Et clarificavi,“I have glorified it,et iterum clarificabo.and I will glorify it again.”

Turba ergo,Therefore,quæ stabat, the crowd,et audierat, which was standing near and had heard it,dicebat tonitruum esse factum.said that it was like thunder.Alii dicebant:Others were saying,Angelus ei locutus est.“An Angel was speaking with him.”

Respondit Jesus,Jesus responded and said:et dixit:“This voice came,Non propter me hæc vox venit, not for my sake, sed propter vos.but for your sakes.

Nunc judicium est mundi:Now is the judgment of the world.nunc princeps hujus mundi ejicietur foras. Now will the prince of this world be cast out.

Et ego, si exaltatus fuero a terra,And when I have been lifted up from the earth, omnia traham ad meipsum.I will draw all things to myself.”

(Hoc autem dicebat,(Now he said this, significans qua morte esset moriturus.)signifying what kind of death he would die.)

Respondit ei turba:The crowd answered him:Nos audivimus ex lege,“We have heard, from the law, quia Christus manet in æternum:that the Christ remains forever.et quomodo tu dicis:And so how can you say,Oportet exaltari Filium hominis?‘The Son of man must be lifted up?’quis est iste Filius hominis?Who is this Son of man?”

Dixit ergo eis Jesus:Therefore,Adhuc modicum,Jesus said to them:lumen in vobis est.“For a brief time,Ambulate dum lucem habetis, the Light is among you.ut non vos tenebræ comprehendant;Walk while you have the Light,et qui ambulat in tenebris,so that the darkness may not overtake you.nescit quo vadat. But whoever walks in darkness does not know where is he going.

Dum lucem habetis,While you have the Light, credite in lucem, believe in the Light,ut filii lucis sitis.so that you may be sons of the Light.”Hæc locutus est Jesus,Jesus spoke these things,et abiit et abscondit se ab eis.and then he went away and hid himself from them.

Cum autem tanta signa fecisset coram eis,And although he had done such great signs in their presence, non credebant in eum;they did not believe in him,

ut sermo Isaiæ prophetæ impleretur,so that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, quem dixit:which says:Domine,“Lord, quis credidit auditui nostro?who has believed in our hearing?et brachium Domini cui revelatum est?And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

Propterea non poterant credere,Because of this, they were not able to believe, quia iterum dixit Isaias:for Isaiah said again:

Excæcavit oculos eorum,“He has blinded their eyes,et induravit cor eorum ut non videant oculis, and hardened their heart, so that they may not see with their eyes,et non intelligant corde, and understand with their heart,et convertantur, et sanem eos.and be converted: and then I would heal them.”

Hæc dixit Isaias,These things Isaiah said, quando vidit gloriam ejus, when he saw his gloryet locutus est de eo.and was speaking about him.

Verumtamen et ex principibus multi crediderunt in eum:Yet truly, many of the leaders also believed in him.sed propter pharisæos non confitebantur,But because of the Pharisees, they did not confess him,ut e synagoga non ejicerentur.so that they would not be cast out of the synagogue.

Dilexerunt enim gloriam hominum magis quam gloriam Dei.For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.

Jesus autem clamavit,But Jesus cried outet dixit:and said:Qui credit in me,“Whoever believes in me,non credit in me,does not believe in me,sed in eum qui misit me.but in him who sent me.

Et qui videt me,And whoever sees me,videt eum qui misit me.sees him who sent me.

Ego lux in mundum veni,I have arrived as a light to the world,ut omnis qui credit in me, in tenebris non maneat.so that all who believe in me might not remain in darkness.

Et si quis audierit verba mea,And if anyone has heard my wordset non custodierit, and not kept them, ego non judico eum;I do not judge him.non enim veni ut judicem mundum,For I did not come so that I may judge the world, sed ut salvificem mundum.but so that I may save the world.

Qui spernit me et non accipit verba mea,Whoever despises mehabet qui judicet eum.and does not accept my words has one who judges him.Sermo quem locutus sum,The word that I have spoken, ille judicabit eum in novissimo die.the same shall judge him on the last day.

Quia ego ex meipso non sum locutus,For I am not speaking from myself, sed qui misit me,but from the Father who sent me.Pater,He gave a commandment to me as to what I should sayipse mihi mandatum dedit quid dicam et quid loquar.and how I should speak.

Et scio quia mandatum ejus vita æterna est:And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore,quæ ergo ego loquor, the things that I speak, sicut dixit mihi Pater, just as the Father has said to me,sic loquor.so also do I speak.”
