Ante diem festum Paschæ,Before the feast day of the Passover, sciens Jesus quia venit hora ejus ut transeat ex hoc mundo ad Patrem:Jesus knew that the hour was approaching when he would pass from this world to the Father.cum dilexisset suos, qui erant in mundo,And since he had always loved his own who were in the world,in finem dilexit eos.he loved them unto the end.

Et cœna facta,And when the meal had taken place, cum diabolus jam misisset in cor ut traderet eum Judas Simonis Iscariotæ:when the devil had now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,

sciens quia omnia dedit ei Pater in manus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his handset quia a Deo exivit, and that he came from Godet ad Deum vadit:and was going to God,

surgit a cœna,he rose up from the meal,et ponit vestimenta sua,and he set aside his vestments,et cum accepisset linteum, and when he had received a towel,præcinxit se.he wrapped it around himself.

Deinde mittit aquam in pelvim,Next he put water into a shallow bowl,et cœpit lavare pedes discipulorum, et extergere linteo, quo erat præcinctus.and he began to wash the feet of the disciples and to wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped.

Venit ergo ad Simonem Petrum. And then he came to Simon Peter.Et dicit ei Petrus:And Peter said to him,Domine,“Lord,tu mihi lavas pedes?would you wash my feet?”

Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit ei:and said to him:Quod ego facio,“What I am doing,tu nescis modo:you do not now understand.scies autem postea. But you shall understand it afterward.”

Dicit ei Petrus:Peter said to him,Non lavabis mihi pedes in æternum.“You shall never wash my feet!”Respondit ei Jesus:Jesus answered him,Si non lavero te,“If I do not wash you,non habebis partem mecum.you will have no place with me.”

Dicit ei Simon Petrus:Simon Peter said to him,Domine,“Then Lord, non tantum pedes meos, not only my feet, sed et manus, but also my handset caput.and my head!”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to him:Qui lotus est, non indiget nisi ut pedes lavet,“He who is washed need only wash his feet, sed est mundus totus. Et vos mundi estis, and then he will be entirely clean. And you are clean, sed non omnes.but not all.”

Sciebat enim quisnam esset qui traderet eum;For he knew which one would betray him.propterea dixit:For this reason, he said,Non estis mundi omnes.“You are not all clean.”

Postquam ergo lavit pedes eorum,And so,et accepit vestimenta sua, after he washed their feet and received his vestments, cum recubuisset iterum, when he had sat down at table again, dixit eis:he said to them:Scitis quid fecerim vobis?“Do you know what I have done for you?

Vos vocatis me Magister et Domine,You call me Teacher and Lord,et bene dicitis:and you speak well:sum etenim.for so I am.

Si ergo ego lavi pedes vestros,Therefore, if I, your Lord and Teacher,Dominus et Magister, have washed your feet,et vos debetis alter alterius lavare pedes.you also ought to wash the feet of one another.

Exemplum enim dedi vobis,For I have given you an example,ut quemadmodum ego feci vobis,so that just as I have done for you,ita et vos faciatis.so also should you do.

Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis:amen, I say to you,non est servus major domino suo:the servant is not greater than his Lord, neque apostolus major est eo qui misit illum.and the apostle is not greater than he who sent him.

Si hæc scitis,If you understand this, beati eritis si feceritis ea.you shall be blessed if you will do it.

Non de omnibus vobis dico:I am not speaking about all of you.ego scio quos elegerim;I know those whom I have chosen.sed ut adimpleatur Scriptura:But this is so that the Scripture may be fulfilled,Qui manducat mecum panem, levabit contra me calcaneum suum.‘He who eats bread with me shall lift up his heel against me.’

Amodo dico vobis,And I tell you this now, priusquam fiat:before it happens,ut cum factum fuerit,so that when it has happened, credatis quia ego sum.you may believe that I am.

Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis:amen, I say to you,qui accipit si quem misero, whoever receives anyone whom I send,me accipit;receives me.qui autem me accipit,And whoever receives me,accipit eum qui me misit.receives him who sent me.”

Cum hæc dixisset Jesus,When Jesus had said these things, turbatus est spiritu:he was troubled in spirit.et protestatus est,And he bore witness by saying:et dixit:“Amen,Amen, amen, amen dico vobis,I say to you, quia unus ex vobis tradet me.that one among you shall betray me.”

Aspiciebant ergo ad invicem discipuli,Therefore, the disciples looked around at one another,hæsitantes de quo diceret.uncertain about whom he spoke.

Erat ergo recumbens unus ex discipulis ejus in sinu Jesu,And leaning against the bosom of Jesus was one of his disciples, quem diligebat Jesus.the one whom Jesus loved.

Innuit ergo huic Simon Petrus,Therefore,et dixit ei:Simon Peter motioned to this oneQuis est,and said to him,de quo dicit?“Who is it that he is speaking about?”

Itaque cum recubuisset ille supra pectus Jesu,And so, leaning against the chest of Jesus, dicit ei: Domine,he said to him, “Lord, quis est?who is it?”

Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded,Ille est cui ego intinctum panem porrexero.“It is he to whom I shall extend the dipped bread.”Et cum intinxisset panem,And when he had dipped the bread, dedit Judæ Simonis Iscariotæ.he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

Et post buccellam,And after the morsel, introivit in eum Satanas.Satan entered into him.Et dixit ei Jesus:And Jesus said to him,Quod facis,“What you are going to do,fac citius.do quickly.”

Hoc autem nemo scivit discumbentium ad quid dixerit ei.Now none of those sitting at table knew why he had said this to him.

Quidam enim putabant,For some were thinking that, quia loculos habebat Judas, because Judas held the purse, quod dixisset ei Jesus:that Jesus had told him,Eme ea quæ opus sunt nobis ad diem festum:“Buy those things which are needed by us for the feast day,”aut egenis ut aliquid daret.or that he might give something to the needy.

Cum ergo accepisset ille buccellam,Therefore, having accepted the morsel, exivit continuo.he went out immediately.Erat autem nox.And it was night.

Cum ergo exisset,Then, when he had gone out, dixit Jesus:Jesus said:Nunc clarificatus est Filius hominis,“Now the Son of man has been glorified,et Deus clarificatus est in eo.and God has been glorified in him.

Si Deus clarificatus est in eo,If God has been glorified in him,et Deus clarificabit eum in semetipso:then God will also glorify him in himself,et continuo clarificabit eum.and he will glorify him without delay.

Filioli,Little sons, adhuc modicum vobiscum sum.for a brief while, I am with you.Quæretis me;You shall seek me,et sicut dixi Judæis,and just as I said to the Jews, quo ego vado,‘Where I am going, vos non potestis venire:you are not able to go,’et vobis dico modo.so also I say to you now.

Mandatum novum do vobis:I give you a new commandment:ut diligatis invicem:Love one another.sicut dilexi vos,Just as I have loved you,ut et vos diligatis invicem.so also must you love one another.

In hoc cognoscent omnes quia discipuli mei estis,By this, all shall recognize that you are my disciples:si dilectionem habueritis ad invicem.if you will have love for one another.”

Dicit ei Simon Petrus:Simon Peter said to him, “Lord,Domine, quo vadis?where are you going?”Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Quo ego vado non potes me modo sequi:“Where I am going, you are not able to follow me now.sequeris autem postea. But you shall follow afterward.”

Dicit ei Petrus:Peter said to him:Quare non possum te sequi modo?“Why am I unable to follow you now?animam meam pro te ponam.I will lay down my life for you!”

Respondit ei Jesus:Jesus answered him:Animam tuam pro me pones?“You will lay down your life for me?amen,Amen, amen dico tibi:amen, I say to you,non cantabit gallus, the rooster will not crow, donec ter me neges.until you deny me three times.”
