Ego sum vitis vera,“I am the true vine,et Pater meus agricola est.and my Father is the vinedresser.

Omnem palmitem in me non ferentem fructum,Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, tollet eum,he will take away.et omnem qui fert fructum,And each one that does bear fruit, purgabit eum,he will cleanse,ut fructum plus afferat.so that it may bring forth more fruit.

Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis. You are clean now, because of the word that I have spoken to you.

Manete in me,Abide in me,et ego in vobis.and I in you.Sicut palmes non potest ferre fructum a semetipso,Just as the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself, nisi manserit in vite, unless it abides in the vine, sic nec vos,so also are you unable, nisi in me manseritis.unless you abide in me.

Ego sum vitis,I am the vine;vos palmites:you are the branches.qui manet in me,Whoever abides in me,et ego in eo,and I in him,hic fert fructum multum, bears much fruit.quia sine me nihil potestis facere. For without me, you are able to do nothing.

Si quis in me non manserit,If anyone does not abide in me,mittetur foras sicut palmes,he will be cast away,et arescet, like a branch,et colligent eum,and he will wither,et in ignem mittent, and they will gather him and cast him into the fire,et ardet.and he burns.

Si manseritis in me,If you abide in me,et verba mea in vobis manserint, and my words abide in you, quodcumque volueritis petetis, then you may ask for whatever you will,et fiet vobis.and it shall be done for you.

In hoc clarificatus est Pater meus,In this,ut fructum plurimum afferatis,my Father is glorified:et efficiamini mei discipuli.that you should bring forth very much fruit and become my disciples.

Sicut dilexit me Pater,As the Father has loved me,et ego dilexi vos.so I have loved you.Manete in dilectione mea.Abide in my love.

Si præcepta mea servaveritis,If you keep my precepts, manebitis in dilectione mea,you shall abide in my love, sicut et ego Patris mei præcepta servavi, just as I also have kept my Father’s preceptset maneo in ejus dilectione.and I abide in his love.

Hæc locutus sum vobis:These things I have spoken to you,ut gaudium meum in vobis sit,so that my joy may be in you,et gaudium vestrum impleatur.and your joy may be fulfilled.

Hoc est præceptum meum,This is my precept:ut diligatis invicem, that you love one another, sicut dilexi vos.just as I have loved you.

Majorem hac dilectionem nemo habet,No one has a greater love than this:ut animam suam ponat quis pro amicis suis.that he lay down his life for his friends.

Vos amici mei estis,You are my friends,si feceritis quæ ego præcipio vobis.if you do what I instruct you.

Jam non dicam vos servos:I will no longer call you servants, quia servus nescit quid faciat dominus ejus.for the servant does not know what his Lord is doing.Vos autem dixi amicos:But I have called you friends, quia omnia quæcumque audivi a Patre meo, because everything whatsoever that I have heard from my Father, nota feci vobis.I have made known to you.

Non vos me elegistis,You have not chosen me,sed ego elegi vos,but I have chosen you.et posui vos ut eatis,And I have appointed you,et fructum afferatis,so that you may go forth and bear fruit,et fructus vester maneat:and so that your fruit may last.ut quodcumque petieritis Patrem in nomine meo,Then whatever you have asked of the Father in my name, det vobis.he shall give to you.

Hæc mando vobis:This I command you:ut diligatis invicem.that you love one another.

Si mundus vos odit,If the world hates you, scitote quia me priorem vobis odio habuit.know that it has hated me before you.

Si de mundo fuissetis,If you had been of the world, mundus quod suum erat diligeret:the world would love what is its own.quia vero de mundo non estis,Yet truly, you are not of the world, sed ego elegi vos de mundo, but I have chosen you out of the world;propterea odit vos mundus.because of this, the world hates you.

Mementote sermonis mei, quem ego dixi vobis:Remember my saying that I told you:non est servus major domino suo.The servant is not greater than his Lord.Si me persecuti sunt,If they have persecuted me,et vos persequentur; si sermonem meum servaverunt, they will persecute you also. If they have kept my word,et vestrum servabunt.they will keep yours also.

Sed hæc omnia facient vobis propter nomen meum:But all these things they will do to you because of my name, quia nesciunt eum qui misit me.for they do not know him who sent me.

Si non venissem,If I had not comeet locutus fuissem eis,and had not spoken to them, peccatum non haberent:they would not have sin.nunc autem excusationem non habent de peccato suo.But now they have no excuse for their sin.

Qui me odit,Whoever hates me,et Patrem meum odit.hates my Father also.

Si opera non fecissem in eis quæ nemo alius fecit,If I had not accomplished among them works that no other person has accomplished, peccatum non haberent:they would not have sin.nunc autem et viderunt,But now they have both seen me,et oderunt et me,and they have hated meet Patrem meum.and my Father.

Sed ut adimpleatur sermo, qui in lege eorum scriptus est:But this is so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law:Quia odio habuerunt me gratis.‘For they hated me without cause.’

Cum autem venerit Paraclitus,But when the Advocate has arrived, quem ego mittam vobis a Patre, whom I will send to you from the Father,Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, ille testimonium perhibebit de me;he will offer testimony about me.

et vos testimonium perhibebitis,And you shall offer testimony, quia ab initio mecum estis.because you are with me from the beginning.”
