Hæc locutus sum vobis,“These things I have spoken to you,ut non scandalizemini.so that you would not stumble.
Absque synagogis facient vos:They will put you out of the synagogues.sed venit hora, ut omnis qui interficit vos arbitretur obsequium se præstare Deo.But the hour is coming when everyone who puts you to death will consider that he is offering an excellent service to God.
Et hæc facient vobis, quia non noverunt Patrem,And they will do these things to you because they have not known the Father,neque me.nor me.
Sed hæc locutus sum vobis,But these things I have spoken to you, so that,ut cum venerit hora eorum, reminiscamini quia ego dixi vobis.when the hour for these things will have arrived, you may remember that I told you.
Hæc autem vobis ab initio non dixi,But I did not tell you these things from the beginning,quia vobiscum eram.because I was with you.Et nunc vado ad eum qui misit me;And now I am going to him who sent me.et nemo ex vobis interrogat me:And no one among you has asked me,Quo vadis?‘Where are you going?’
sed quia hæc locutus sum vobis,But because I have spoken these things to you,tristitia implevit cor vestrum.sorrow has filled your heart.
Sed ego veritatem dico vobis:But I tell you the truth:expedit vobis ut ego vadam:it is expedient for you that I am going.si enim non abiero,For if I do not go,Paraclitus non veniet ad vos;the Advocate will not come to you.si autem abiero,But when I will have gone away,mittam eum ad vos.I will send him to you.
Et cum venerit ille,And when he has arrived,arguet mundum de peccato,he will argue against the world,et de justitia, et de judicio.about sin and about justice and about judgment:
De peccato quidem,about sin, indeed,quia non crediderunt in me.because they have not believed in me;
De justitia vero,about justice, truly,quia ad Patrem vado,because I am going to the Father,et jam non videbitis me.and you will not see me any longer;
De judicio autem,about judgment, then,quia princeps hujus mundi jam judicatus est.because the prince of this world has already been judged.
Adhuc multa habeo vobis dicere,I still have many things to say to you,sed non potestis portare modo.but you are not able to bear them now.
Cum autem venerit ille Spiritus veritatis,But when the Spirit of truth has arrived,docebit vos omnem veritatem:he will teach the whole truth to you.non enim loquetur a semetipso,For he will not be speaking from himself.sed quæcumque audiet loquetur,Instead, whatever he will hear, he will speak.et quæ ventura sunt annuntiabit vobis.And he will announce to you the things that are to come.
Ille me clarificabit,He shall glorify me.quia de meo accipiet,For he will receive from what is mine,et annuntiabit vobis.and he will announce it to you.
Omnia quæcumque habet Pater,All things whatsoever that the Father has are mine.mea sunt.For this reason,Propterea dixi: quia de meo accipiet, et annuntiabit vobis.I said that he will receive from what is mine and that he will announce it to you.
Modicum,A little while,et jam non videbitis me;and then you will not see me.et iterum modicum,And again a little while,et videbitis me:and you will see me.quia vado ad Patrem.For I am going to the Father.”
Dixerunt ergo ex discipulis ejus ad invicem:Then some of his disciples said to one another: “What is this,Quid est hoc quod dicit nobis: Modicum,that he is saying to us: ‘A little while,et non videbitis me;and you will not see me,’et iterum modicum,and ‘Again a little while,et videbitis me,and you will see me,’et quia vado ad Patrem?and, ‘For I am going to the Father?’”
Dicebant ergo:And they said: “What is this,Quid est hoc quod dicit:that he is saying, ‘A little while?’Modicum? nescimus quid loquitur.We do not understand what he is saying.”
Cognovit autem Jesus,But Jesus realized that they wanted to question him,quia volebant eum interrogare,and so he said to them:et dixit eis:“Are you inquiring among yourselves about this,De hoc quæritis inter vos quia dixi:that I said:Modicum,‘A little while,et non videbitis me;and you will not see me,et iterum modicum,and again a little while,et videbitis me.and you will see me?’
Amen,Amen,amen dico vobis:amen,quia plorabitis,I say to you,et flebitis vos,that you shall mourn and weep,mundus autem gaudebit;but the world will rejoice.vos autem contristabimini,And you shall be greatly saddened,sed tristitia vestra vertetur in gaudium.yet your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
Mulier cum parit,A woman, when she is giving birth,tristitiam habet, quia venit hora ejus;has sorrow, because her hour has arrived.cum autem pepererit puerum,But when she has given birth to the child,jam non meminit pressuræ propter gaudium,then she no longer remembers the difficulties, because of the joy:quia natus est homo in mundum.for a man has been born into the world.
Et vos igitur nunc quidem tristitiam habetis,Therefore, you also, indeed,iterum autem videbo vos,have sorrow now. But I will see you again,et gaudebit cor vestrum:and your heart shall rejoice.et gaudium vestrum nemo tollet a vobis.And no one will take away your joy from you.
Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam.And, in that day, you will not petition me for anything.Amen,Amen,amen dico vobis:amen, I say to you,si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis.if you ask the Father for anything in my name, he will give it to you.
Usque modo non petistis quidquam in nomine meo:Until now, you have not requested anything in my name.petite, et accipietis,Ask, and you shall receive,ut gaudium vestrum sit plenum.so that your joy may be full.
Hæc in proverbiis locutus sum vobis.I have spoken these things to you in proverbs.Venit hora cum jam non in proverbiis loquar vobis,The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs; instead,sed palam de Patre annuntiabo vobis:I will announce to you plainly from the Father.
in illo die in nomine meo petetis:In that day, you shall ask in my name,et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo Patrem de vobis:and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you.
ipse enim Pater amat vos,For the Father himself loves you,quia vos me amastis,because you have loved me,et credidistis, quia ego a Deo exivi.and because you have believed that I went forth from God.
Exivi a Patre,I went forth from the Father,et veni in mundum:and I have come into the world.iterum relinquo mundum,Next I am leaving the world,et vado ad Patrem.and I am going to the Father.”
Dicunt ei discipuli ejus:His disciples said to him:Ecce nunc palam loqueris,“Behold,et proverbium nullum dicis:now you are speaking plainly and not reciting a proverb.
nunc scimus quia scis omnia,Now we know that you know all things,et non opus est tibi ut quis te interroget:and that you have no need for anyone to question you.in hoc credimus quia a Deo existi.By this, we believe that you went forth from God.”
Respondit eis Jesus:Jesus answered them:Modo creditis?“Do you believe now?
ecce venit hora,Behold, the hour is coming,et jam venit,and it has now arrived,ut dispergamini unusquisque in propria,when you will be scattered, each one on his own,et me solum relinquatis:and you will leave me behind, alone.et non sum solus,And yet I am not alone,quia Pater mecum est.for the Father is with me.
Hæc locutus sum vobis,These things I have spoken to you,ut in me pacem habeatis.so that you may have peace in me.In mundo pressuram habebitis:In the world, you will have difficulties.sed confidite,But have confidence:ego vici mundum.I have overcome the world.”
