Una autem sabbati,Then on the first Sabbath,Maria Magdalene venit mane,Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, cum adhuc tenebræ essent, while it was still dark,ad monumentum: et vidit lapidem sublatum a monumento.and she saw that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb.

Cucurrit ergo,Therefore,et venit ad Simonem Petrum, she ran and went to Simon Peter,et ad alium discipulum, and to the other disciple, quem amabat Jesus, whom Jesus loved,et dicit illis:and she said to them,Tulerunt Dominum de monumento,“They have taken the Lord away from the tomb,et nescimus ubi posuerunt eum.and we do not know where they have laid him.”

Exiit ergo Petrus,Therefore,et ille alius discipulus,Peter departed with the other disciple,et venerunt ad monumentum.and they went to the tomb.

Currebant autem duo simul,Now they both ran together,et ille alius discipulus præcucurrit citius Petro, but the other disciple ran more quickly, ahead of Peter,et venit primus ad monumentum.and so he arrived at the tomb first.

Et cum se inclinasset,And when he bowed down, vidit posita linteamina:he saw the linen cloths lying there, non tamen introivit.but he did not yet enter.

Venit ergo Simon Petrus sequens eum,Then Simon Peter arrived, following him,et introivit in monumentum, et vidit linteamina posita, and he entered the tomb, and he saw the linen cloths lying there,

et sudarium, and the separate cloth which had been over his head, quod fuerat super caput ejus, not placed with the linen cloths, non cum linteaminibus positum, but in a separate place, sed separatim involutum in unum locum.wrapped up by itself.

Tunc ergo introivitThen the other disciple,et ille discipulus qui venerat primus ad monumentum:who had arrived first at the tomb,et vidit, also entered.et credidit:And he saw and believed.

nondum enim sciebant Scripturam,For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, quia oportebat eum a mortuis resurgere.that it was necessary for him to rise again from the dead.

Abierunt ergo iterum discipuli ad semetipsos. Then the disciples went away again, each by himself.

Maria autem stabat ad monumentum foris,But Mary was standing outside the tomb,plorans.weeping.Dum ergo fleret,Then, inclinavit se,while she was weeping,et prospexit in monumentum:she bowed down and gazed into the tomb.

et vidit duos angelos in albis sedentes,And she saw two Angels in white, unum ad caput, sitting where the body of Jesus had been placed,et unum ad pedes, one at the head, ubi positum fuerat corpus Jesu.and one at the feet.

Dicunt ei illi:They said to her,Mulier,“Woman, quid ploras?why are you weeping?”Dicit eis:She said to them,Quia tulerunt Dominum meum:“Because they have taken away my Lord,et nescio ubi posuerunt eum.and I do not know where they have placed him.”

Hæc cum dixisset,When she had said this, conversa est retrorsum, she turned aroundet vidit Jesum stantem:and saw Jesus standing there,et non sciebat quia Jesus est.but she did not know that it was Jesus.

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her:Mulier,“Woman, quid ploras?why are you weeping?quem quæris?Who are you seeking?”Illa existimans quia hortulanus esset,Considering that it was the gardener, dicit ei:she said to him,Domine,“Sir,si tu sustulisti eum,if you have moved him, dicito mihi ubi posuisti eum, tell me where you have placed him,et ego eum tollam.and I will take him away.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her,Maria.“Mary!”Conversa illa, dicit ei:And turning, she said to him,Rabboni (quod dicitur Magister).“Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her:Noli me tangere,“Do not touch me.nondum enim ascendi ad Patrem meum:For I have not yet ascended to my Father.vade autem ad fratres meos,But go to my brotherset dic eis:and tell them:Ascendo ad Patrem meum,‘I am ascending to my Fatheret Patrem vestrum, and to your Father,Deum meum,to my Godet Deum vestrum.and to your God.’”

Venit Maria Magdalene annuntians discipulis:Mary Magdalene went, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,Quia vidi Dominum, et hæc dixit mihi.and these are the things that he said to me.”

Cum ergo sero esset die illo,Then, una sabbatorum, when it was late on the same day,et fores essent clausæ,on the first of the Sabbaths, ubi erant discipuli congregati propter metum Judæorum:and the doors were closed where the disciples were gathered, venit Jesus, for fear of the Jews,et stetit in medio,Jesus came and stood in their midst,et dixit eis:and he said to them:Pax vobis.“Peace to you.”

Et cum hoc dixisset,And when he had said this, ostendit eis manus et latus.he showed them his handsGavisi sunt ergo discipuli, and side.viso Domino. And the disciples were gladdened when they saw the Lord.

Dixit ergo eis iterum:Therefore, he said to them again:Pax vobis.“Peace to you.Sicut misit me Pater,As the Father has sent me,et ego mitto vos.so I send you.”

Hæc cum dixisset,When he had said this, insufflavit,he breathed on them.et dixit eis:And he said to them:Accipite Spiritum Sanctum:“Receive the Holy Spirit.

quorum remiseritis peccata,Those whose sins you shall forgive, remittuntur eis:they are forgiven them,et quorum retinueritis, and those whose sins you shall retain, retenta sunt.they are retained.”

Thomas autem unus ex duodecim,Now Thomas, one of the twelve, qui dicitur Didymus, who is called the Twin, non erat cum eis quando venit Jesus.was not with them when Jesus arrived.

Dixerunt ergo ei alii discipuli:Therefore,Vidimus Dominum.the other disciples said to him,Ille autem dixit eis:“We have seen the Lord.”Nisi videro in manibus ejus fixuram clavorum,But he said to them,et mittam digitum meum in locum clavorum,“Unless I will see in his hands the mark of the nails and place my finger into the place of the nails,et mittam manum meam in latus ejus, and place my hand into his side, non credam.I will not believe.”

Et post dies octo,And after eight days, iterum erant discipuli ejus intus, again his disciples were within,et Thomas cum eis.and Thomas was with them.Venit Jesus januis clausis,Jesus arrived,et stetit in medio, though the doors had been closed,et dixit:and he stood in their midst and said,Pax vobis.“Peace to you.”

Deinde dicit Thomæ:Next, he said to Thomas:Infer digitum tuum huc, et vide manus meas,“Look at my hands, and place your finger here;et affer manum tuam, and bring your hand close,et mitte in latus meum:and place it at my side.et noli esse incredulus,And do not choose to be unbelieving, sed fidelis.but faithful.”

Respondit Thomas, et dixit ei:Thomas responded and said to him,Dominus meus et Deus meus.“My Lord and my God.”

Dixit ei Jesus:Jesus said to him:Quia vidisti me,“You have seen me,Thoma,Thomas, credidisti:so you have believed.beati qui non viderunt,Blessed are those who have not seenet crediderunt.and yet have believed.”

Multa quidem et alia signa fecit Jesus in conspectu discipulorum suorum,Jesus also accomplished many other signs in the sight of his disciples.quæ non sunt scripta in libro hoc. These have not been written in this book.

Hæc autem scripta sunt ut credatis,But these things have been written, quia Jesus est Christus Filius Dei:so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,et ut credentes, the Son of God, and so that, vitam habeatis in nomine ejus.in believing, you may have life in his name.
