Tunc ergo apprehendit Pilatus Jesum,Therefore,et flagellavit.Pilate then took Jesus into custody and scourged him.
Et milites plectentes coronam de spinis,And the soldiers, plaiting a crown of thorns, imposuerunt capiti ejus:imposed it on his head.et veste purpurea circumdederunt eum.And they put a purple garment around him.
Et veniebant ad eum,And they were approaching himet dicebant:and saying,Ave,“Hail, rex Judæorum:king of the Jews!”et dabant ei alapas. And they struck him repeatedly.
Exivit ergo iterum Pilatus foras, et dicit eis:Then Pilate went outside again, and he said to them:Ecce adduco vobis eum foras,“Behold, I am bringing him out to you,ut cognoscatis quia nullam invenio in eo causam.so that you may realize that I find no case against him.”
(Exivit ergo Jesus portans coronam spineam,(Then Jesus went out,et purpureum vestimentum.)bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.)Et dicit eis:And he said to them,Ecce homo.“Behold the man.”
Cum ergo vidissent eum pontifices et ministri,Therefore, clamabant, when the high priests and the attendants had seen him, dicentes:they cried out,Crucifige, saying:crucifige eum.“Crucify him!Dicit eis Pilatus:Crucify him!”Accipite eum vos,Pilate said to them:et crucifigite:“Take him yourselves and crucify him.ego enim non invenio in eo causam. For I find no case against him.”
Responderunt ei Judæi:The Jews answered him, “We have a law,Nos legem habemus, and according to the law,et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit.he ought to die, for he has made himself the Son of God.”
Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem,Therefore, when Pilate had heard this word, magis timuit.he was more fearful.
Et ingressus est prætorium iterum:And he entered into the praetorium again.et dixit ad Jesum:And he said to Jesus.Unde es tu?“Where are you from?”Jesus autem responsum non dedit ei.But Jesus gave him no response.
Dicit ergo ei Pilatus:Therefore, Pilate said to him:Mihi non loqueris?“Will you not speak to me?nescis quia potestatem habeo crucifigere te,Do you not know that I have authority to crucify you,et potestatem habeo dimittere te?and I have authority to release you?”
Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded,Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam,“You would not have any authority over me,nisi tibi datum esset desuper.unless it were given to you from above.Propterea qui me tradidit tibi,For this reason, majus peccatum habet.he who has handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
Et exinde quærebat Pilatus dimittere eum.And from then on, Pilate was seeking to release him.Judæi autem clamabant dicentes:But the Jews were crying out, saying:Si hunc dimittis,“If you release this man,non es amicus Cæsaris.you are no friend of Caesar.Omnis enim qui se regem facit, contradicit Cæsari. For anyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar.”
Pilatus autem cum audisset hos sermones,Now when Pilate had heard these words, adduxit foras Jesum:he brought Jesus outside,et sedit pro tribunali, and he sat down in the seat of judgment,in loco qui dicitur Lithostrotos,in a place which is called the Pavement, hebraice autem Gabbatha.but in Hebrew, it is called the Elevation.
Erat autem parasceve Paschæ,Now it was the preparation day of the Passover, hora quasi sexta, about the sixth hour.et dicit Judæis:And he said to the Jews,Ecce rex vester.“Behold your king.”
Illi autem clamabant:But they were crying out:Tolle, tolle,“Take him away!crucifige eum.Take him away! Crucify him!”Dicit eis Pilatus:Pilate said to them,Regem vestrum crucifigam?“Shall I crucify your king?”Responderunt pontifices:The high priests responded,Non habemus regem, nisi Cæsarem.“We have no king except Caesar.”
Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. Therefore,Susceperunt autem Jesum,he then handed him over to them to be crucified.et eduxerunt. And they took Jesus and led him away.
Et bajulans sibi crucem exivit in eum,And carrying his own cross, qui dicitur Calvariæ locum,he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, hebraice autem Golgotha:but in Hebrew it is called the Place of the Skull.
ubi crucifixerunt eum,There they crucified him,et cum eo alios duos hincand with him two others,et hinc, one on each side, medium autem Jesum.with Jesus in the middle.
Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus,Then Pilate also wrote a title,et posuit super crucem.and he set it above the cross.Erat autem scriptum:And it was written:Jesus Nazarenus,Jesus the Nazarene,Rex Judæorum.King of the Jews.
Hunc ergo titulum multi Judæorum legerunt:Therefore, quia prope civitatem erat locus, many of the Jews read this title, ubi crucifixus est Jesus, for the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city.et erat scriptum hebraice,And it was written in Hebrew,græce,in Greek,et latine.and in Latin.
Dicebant ergo Pilato pontifices Judæorum:Then the high priests of the Jews said to Pilate:Noli scribere:Do not write,Rex Judæorum:‘King of the Jews,’sed quia ipse dixit:but that he said,Rex sum Judæorum.‘I am King of the Jews.’
Respondit Pilatus:Pilate responded,Quod scripsi,“What I have written,scripsi.I have written.”
Milites ergo cum crucifixissent eum,Then the soldiers, when they had crucified him, acceperunt vestimenta ejus (et fecerunt quatuor partes, took his garments, and they made four parts, unicuique militi partem) et tunicam.one part to each soldier, and the tunic.Erat autem tunica inconsutilis, desuper contexta per totum. But the tunic was seamless, woven from above throughout the whole.
Dixerunt ergo ad invicem:Then they said to one another, “Let us not cut it,Non scindamus eam,but instead let us cast lots over it,sed sortiamur de illa cujus sit. Ut Scriptura impleretur,to see whose it will be.” This was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, dicens: Partiti sunt vestimenta mea sibi:saying: “They have distributed my garments among themselves,et in vestem meam miserunt sortem.and for my vesture they have cast lots.”Et milites quidem hæc fecerunt. And indeed, the soldiers did these things.
Stabant autem juxta crucem Jesu mater ejus,And standing beside the cross of Jesus were his mother,et soror matris ejus, and his mother’s sister,Maria Cleophæ,and Mary of Cleophas,et Maria Magdalene.and Mary Magdalene.
Cum vidisset ergo Jesus matrem,Therefore,et discipulum stantem, when Jesus had seen his motherquem diligebat, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, dicit matri suæ:he said to his mother,Mulier,“Woman, ecce filius tuus.behold your son.”
Deinde dicit discipulo:Next, he said to the disciple,Ecce mater tua.“Behold your mother.”Et ex illa hora accepit eam discipulus in sua.And from that hour, the disciple accepted her as his own.
Postea sciens Jesus quia omnia consummata sunt,After this, Jesus knew that all had been accomplished,ut consummaretur Scriptura,so in order that the Scripture might be completed, dixit:he said,Sitio.“I thirst.”
Vas ergo erat positum aceto plenum. And there was a container placed there, full of vinegar.Illi autem spongiam plenam aceto, hyssopo circumponentes,Then, placing a sponge full of vinegar around hyssop, obtulerunt ori ejus.they brought it to his mouth.
Cum ergo accepisset Jesus acetum,Then Jesus, when he had received the vinegar, dixit:said:Consummatum est.“It is consummated.”Et inclinato capite tradidit spiritum. And bowing down his head, he surrendered his spirit.
Judæi ergo (quoniam parasceve erat) ut non remanerent in cruce corpora sabbato (erat enim magnus dies ille sabbati),Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day),rogaverunt Pilatum ut frangerentur eorum crura, they petitioned Pilate in order that their legs might be broken,et tollerentur.and they might be taken away.
Venerunt ergo milites:Therefore, the soldiers approached,et primi quidem fregerunt crura, and, indeed, they broke the legs of the first one,et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo.and of the other who was crucified with him.
Ad Jesum autem cum venissent,But after they had approached Jesus,ut viderunt eum jam mortuum, when they saw that he was already dead, non fregerunt ejus crura, they did not break his legs.
sed unus militum lancea latus ejus aperuit,Instead,et continuo exivit sanguisone of the soldiers opened his side with a lance,et aqua.and immediately there went out blood and water.
Et qui vidit, testimonium perhibuit:And he who saw this has offered testimony,et verum est testimonium ejus.and his testimony is true.Et ille scit quia vera dicit:And he knows that he speaks the truth,ut et vos credatis.so that you also may believe.
Facta sunt enim hæc ut Scriptura impleretur:For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled:Os non comminuetis ex eo.“You shall not break a bone of him.”
Et iterum alia Scriptura dicit:And again, another Scripture says:Videbunt in quem transfixerunt.“They shall look upon him, whom they have pierced.”
Then, after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews) petitioned Pilate so that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. Therefore, he went and took away the body of Jesus.
Venit autem et Nicodemus,Now Nicodemus also arrived, qui venerat ad Jesum nocte primum,(who had gone to Jesus at first by night) bringing a mixture of myrrhferens mixturam myrrhæ et aloës,and aloe, quasi libras centum.weighing about seventy pounds.
Acceperunt ergo corpus Jesu,Therefore, they took the body of Jesus,et ligaverunt illud linteis cum aromatibus, and they bound it with linen cloths and the aromatic spices, sicut mos est Judæis sepelire.just as it is the manner of the Jews to bury.
Erat autem in loco, ubi crucifixus est, hortus:Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden,et in horto monumentum novum, and in the garden there was a new tomb,in quo nondum quisquam positus erat.in which no one had yet been laid.
Ibi ergo propter parasceven Judæorum,Therefore, because of the preparation day of the Jews, quia juxta erat monumentum, since the tomb was nearby, posuerunt Jesum.they placed Jesus there.
