Post hæc erat dies festus Judæorum,After these things, there was a feast day of the Jews,et ascendit Jesus Jerosolymam.and so Jesus ascended to Jerusalem.

Est autem Jerosolymis probatica piscina,Now at Jerusalem is the Pool of Evidence,quæ cognominatur hebraice Bethsaida, which in Hebrew is known as the Place of Mercy;quinque porticus habens.it has five porticos.

In his jacebat multitudo magna languentium,Along these lay a great multitude of the sick,cæcorum, the blind, claudorum, the lame, aridorum, and the withered, exspectantium aquæ motum.waiting for the movement of the water.

Angelus autem Domini descendebat secundum tempus in piscinam, et movebatur aqua. Now at times an Angel of the Lord would descend into the pool, and so the water was moved.Et qui prior descendisset in piscinam post motionem aquæ,And whoever descended first into the pool, after the motion of the water, sanus fiebat a quacumque detinebatur infirmitate.he was healed of whatever infirmity held him.

Erat autem quidam homo ibi trigintaAnd there was a certain man in that place,et octo annos habens in infirmitate sua.having been in his infirmity for thirty-eight years.

Hunc autem cum vidisset Jesus jacentem,Then, when Jesus had seen him reclining,et cognovisset quia jam multum tempus haberet, and when he realized that he had been afflicted for a long time, dicit ei:he said to him,Vis sanus fieri?“Do you want to be healed?”

Respondit ei languidus:The invalid answered him:Domine,“Lord, hominem non habeo, ut, cum turbata fuerit aqua,I do not have any man to put me in the pool, mittat me in piscinam:when the water has been stirred.dum venio enim ego,For as I am going, alius ante me descendit.another descends ahead of me.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to him,Surge,“Rise, tolle grabatum tuumtake up your stretcher,et ambula.and walk.”

Et statim sanus factus est homo ille:And immediately the man was healed.et sustulit grabatum suum,And he took up his stretcheret ambulabat.and walked.Erat autem sabbatum in die illo. Now this day was the Sabbath.

Dicebant ergo Judæi illi qui sanatus fuerat:Therefore, the Jews said to the one who had been healed:Sabbatum est,“It is the Sabbath.non licet tibi tollere grabatum tuum.It is not lawful for you to take up your stretcher.”

Respondit eis:He answered them,Qui me sanum fecit,“The one who healed me,ille mihi dixit:he said to me,Tolle grabatum tuum et ambula.‘Take up your stretcher and walk.’”

Interrogaverunt ergo eum:Therefore, they questioned him,Quis est ille homo qui dixit tibi:“Who is that man, who said to you,Tolle grabatum tuum et ambula?‘Take up your bed and walk?’”

Is autem qui sanus fuerat effectus, nesciebat quis esset. But the one who had been given health did not know who it was.Jesus enim declinavit a turba constituta in loco. For Jesus had turned aside from the crowd gathered in that place.

Postea invenit eum Jesus in templo,Afterwards, Jesus found him in the temple,et dixit illi:and he said to him:Ecce sanus factus es;“Behold, you have been healed.jam noli peccare,Do not choose to sin further,ne deterius tibi aliquid contingat.otherwise something worse may happen to you.”

Abiit ille homo,This man went away,et nuntiavit Judæis quia Jesus esset, qui fecit eum sanum.and he reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had given him health.

Propterea persequebantur Judæi Jesum,Because of this, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, quia hæc faciebat in sabbato.for he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

Jesus autem respondit eis:But Jesus answered them,Pater meus usque modo operatur,“Even now, my Father is working,et ego operor.and I am working.”

Propterea ergo magis quærebant eum Judæi interficere:And so,quia non solum solvebat sabbatum, because of this, sed et patrem suum dicebat Deum, the Jews were seeking to kill him even more so.æqualem se faciens Deo.For not only did he break the Sabbath,Respondit itaque Jesus, but he even said that God was his Father,et dixit eis:making himself equal to God.

Amen, amen dico vobis:Then Jesus responded and said to them: “Amen, non potest Filius a se facere quidquam, amen, I say to you, the Son is not able to do anything of himself, nisi quod viderit Patrem facientem: quæcumque enim ille fecerit, but only what he has seen the Father doing. For whatever he does,hæc et Filius similiter facit.even this does the Son do, similarly.

Pater enim diligit Filium,For the Father loves the Son,et omnia demonstrat ei quæ ipse facit:and he shows him all that he himself does.et majora his demonstrabit ei opera,And greater works than these will he show him,ut vos miremini.so much so that you shall wonder.

Sicut enim Pater suscitat mortuos, et vivificat,For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, sic et Filius, quos vult, vivificat.so also does the Son give life to whomever he wills.

Neque enim Pater judicat quemquam:For the Father does not judge anyone.sed omne judicium dedit Filio,But he has given all judgment to the Son,

ut omnes honorificent Filium,so that all may honor the Son,sicut honorificant Patrem;just as they honor the Father.qui non honorificat Filium,Whoever does not honor the Son,non honorificat Patrem, qui misit illum.does not honor the Father who sent him.

Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis, amen, I say to you, quia qui verbum meum audit, that whoever hears my word,et credit ei qui misit me,and believes in him who sent me,habet vitam æternam, et in judicium non venit, has eternal life, and he does not go into judgment, sed transiit a morte in vitam.but instead he crosses from death into life.

Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis, amen, quia venit hora,I say to you,et nunc est, that the hour is coming, quando mortui audient vocem Filii Dei:and it is now,et qui audierint, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God;vivent.and those who hear it shall live.

Sicut enim Pater habet vitam in semetipso,For just as the Father has life in himself, sic dedit et Filio habere vitam in semetipso:so also has he granted to the Son to have life in himself.

et potestatem dedit ei judicium facere,And he has given him the authority to accomplish judgment.quia Filius hominis est.For he is the Son of man.

Nolite mirari hoc,Do not be amazed at this.quia venit hora in qua omnes qui in monumentis sunt audient vocem Filii Dei:For the hour is coming in which all who are in the grave shall hear the voice of the Son of God.

et procedent qui bona fecerunt, in resurrectionem vitæ;And those who have done good shall go forth to the resurrection of life. Yet truly, qui vero mala egerunt, in resurrectionem judicii.those who have done evil shall go to the resurrection of judgment.

Non possum ego a meipso facere quidquam.I am not able to do anything of myself.Sicut audio,As I hear, judico:so do I judge.et judicium meum justum est,And my judgment is just.quia non quæro voluntatem meam,For I do not seek my own will, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me.but the will of him who sent me.

Si ego testimonium perhibeo de meipso,If I offer testimony about myself, testimonium meum non est verum.my testimony is not true.

Alius est qui testimonium perhibet de me:There is another who offers testimony about me,et scio quia verum est testimonium, quod perhibet de me.and I know that the testimony which he offers about me is true.

Vos misistis ad Joannem,You sent to John,et testimonium perhibuit veritati.and he offered testimony to the truth.

Ego autem non ab homine testimonium accipio:But I do not accept testimony from man. Instead, sed hæc dico ut vos salvi sitis.I say these things, so that you may be saved.

Ille erat lucerna ardens et lucens:He was a burning and shining light.vos autem voluistis ad horam exsultare in luce ejus.So you were willing, at the time, to exult in his light.

Ego autem habeo testimonium majus Joanne. But I hold a greater testimony than that of John.Opera enim quæ dedit mihi Pater ut perficiam ea:For the works which the Father has given to me,ipsa opera,so that I may complete them,quæ ego facio, these works themselves that I do,testimonium perhibent de me,offer testimony about me:quia Pater misit me:that the Father has sent me.

et qui misit me Pater, ipse testimonium perhibuit de me:And the Father who has sent me has himself offered testimony about me.neque vocem ejus umquam audistis,And you have never heard his voice, neque speciem ejus vidistis:nor have you beheld his appearance.

et verbum ejus non habetis in vobis manens:And you do not have his word abiding in you.quia quem misit ille,For the one whom he sent, huic vos non creditis.the same you would not believe.

Scrutamini Scripturas,Study the Scriptures.quia vos putatis in ipsis vitam æternam habere:For you think that in them you have eternal life.et illæ sunt quæ testimonium perhibent de me:And yet they also offer testimony about me.

et non vultis venire ad me ut vitam habeatis. And you are not willing to come to me, so that you may have life.

Claritatem ab hominibus non accipio.I do not accept glory from men.

Sed cognovi vos,But I know you, quia dilectionem Dei non habetis in vobis.that you do not have the love of God within you.

Ego veni in nomine Patris mei,I have come in the name of my Father,et non accipitis me;and you do not accept me.si alius venerit in nomine suo,If another will arrive in his own name, illum accipietis.him you will accept.

Quomodo vos potestis credere,How are you able to believe, qui gloriam ab invicem accipitis, et gloriam quæ a solo Deo est, non quæritis?you who accept glory from one another and yet do not seek the glory that is from God alone?

Nolite putare quia ego accusaturus sim vos apud Patrem:Do not consider that I might accuse you with the Father.est qui accusat vos Moyses,There is one who accuses you,in quo vos speratis.Moses, in whom you hope.

Si enim crederetis Moysi,For if you were believing in Moses, crederetis forsitan et mihi:perhaps you would believe in me also.de me enim ille scripsit. For he wrote about me.

Si autem illius litteris non creditis,But if you do not believe by his writings, quomodo verbis meis credetis?how will you believe by my words?”
