Ut ergo cognovit Jesus quia audierunt pharisæi quod Jesus plures discipulos facit,And so,et baptizat, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciplesquam Joannesand baptized more than John,

(quamquam Jesus non baptizaret,(though Jesus himself was not baptizing, sed discipuli ejus),but only his disciples)

reliquit Judæam,he left behind Judea,et abiit iterum in Galilæam.and he traveled again to Galilee.

Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam. Now he needed to cross through Samaria.

Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ,Therefore,quæ dicitur Sichar,he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, juxta prædium quod dedit Jacob Joseph filio suo.near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Erat autem ibi fons Jacob. And Jacob’s well was there.Jesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere,And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, sedebat sic supra fontem.was sitting in a certain way on the well.Hora erat quasi sexta. It was about the sixth hour.

Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam.A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water.Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her,Da mihi bibere.“Give me to drink.”

(Discipuli enim ejus abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.)For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food.

Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana:And so, that Samaritan woman said to him,Quomodo tu, Judæus cum sis,“How is it that you, being a Jew,bibere a me poscis, are requesting a drink from me,quæ sum mulier Samaritana?though I am a Samaritan woman?”non enim coutuntur Judæi Samaritanis. For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.

Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit ei:and said to her:Si scires donum Dei,“If you knew the gift of God,et quis est qui dicit tibi:and who it is who is saying to you,Da mihi bibere,‘Give me to drink,’tu forsitan petisses ab eo,perhaps you would have made a request of him,et dedisset tibi aquam vivam.and he would have given you living water.”

Dicit ei mulier:The woman said to him:Domine, neque in quo haurias habes,“Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water,et puteus altus est:and the well is deep.unde ergo habes aquam vivam? From where, then, do you have living water?

Numquid tu major es patre nostro Jacob,Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, who gave us the well and who drank from it,et filii ejus, et pecora ejus?with his sons and his cattle?”

Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei:Jesus responded and said to her:Omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum;“All who drink from this water will thirst again.qui autem biberit ex aqua quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in æternum:But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.

sed aqua quam ego dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquæ salientis in vitam æternam.Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”

Dicit ad eum mulier:The woman said to him,Domine,“Lord,da mihi hanc aquam, give me this water,ut non sitiam,so that I may not thirstneque veniam huc haurire.and may not come here to draw water.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her,Vade,“Go,voca virum tuum, call your husband,et veni huc.and return here.”

Respondit mulier,The woman responded and said,et dixit:“I have no husband.”Non habeo virum.Jesus said to her:Dicit ei Jesus:“You have spoken well,Bene dixisti,in saying, quia non habeo virum;‘I have no husband.’

quinque enim viros habuisti,For you have had five husbands,et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir:but he whom you have now is not your husband.hoc vere dixisti. You have spoken this in truth.”

Dicit ei mulier:The woman said to him:Domine,“Lord, video quia propheta es tu.I see that you are a Prophet.

Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt,Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,et vos dicitis, quia Jerosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet.but you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her:Mulier,“Woman, crede mihi, believe me,quia venit hora, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, quando neque in monte hoc, neither on this mountain, neque in Jerosolymis adorabitis Patrem.nor in Jerusalem.

Vos adoratis quod nescitis:You worship what you do not know;nos adoramus quod scimus,we worship what we do know.quia salus ex Judæis est.For salvation is from the Jews.

Sed venit hora,But the hour is coming,et nunc est,and it is now, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate.when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spiritNam et Pater tales quærit, and in truth.qui adorent eum.For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him.

Spiritus est Deus:God is Spirit.et eos qui adorant eum,And so,in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare.those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Dicit ei mulier:The woman said to him:Scio quia Messias venit (qui dicitur Christus):“I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ).cum ergo venerit ille,And then, when he will have arrived, nobis annuntiabit omnia.he will announce everything to us.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to her:Ego sum,“I am he,qui loquor tecum.the one who is speaking with you.”

Et continuo venerunt discipuli ejus,And then his disciples arrived.et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman.Nemo tamen dixit:Yet no one said:Quid quæris?“What are you seeking?”aut,or,Quid loqueris cum ea?“Why are you talking with her?”

Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier,And so the woman left behind her water jaret abiit in civitatem, and went into the city.et dicit illis hominibus:And she said to the men there:

Venite,“Comeet videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci:and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done.numquid ipse est Christus? Is he not the Christ?”

Exierunt ergo de civitateTherefore,et veniebant ad eum.they went out of the city and came to him.

Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes:Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him,Rabbi, saying, manduca.“Rabbi, eat.”

Ille autem dicit eis:But he said to them,Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis.“I have food to eat which you do not know.”

Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem:Therefore, the disciples said to one another,Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?“Could someone have brought him something to eat?”

Dicit eis Jesus:Jesus said to them:Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem ejus qui misit me,“My food is to do the will of the One who sent me,ut perficiam opus ejus.so that I may perfect his work.

Nonne vos dicitis quod adhuc quatuor menses sunt,Do you not say, ‘There are still four months,et messis venit? Ecce dico vobis:and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones,I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside;quia albæ sunt jam ad messem.for it is already ripe for the harvest.

Et qui metit,For he who reaps, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam:receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life,ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit.so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

In hoc enim est verbum verum:For in this the word is true:quia alius est qui seminat, that it is one who sows,et alius est qui metit.and it is another who reaps.

Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis:I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor.alii laboraverunt,Others have labored,et vos in labores eorum introistis.and you have entered into their labors.”

Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum,Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis:because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony:Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci.“For he told me all the things that I have done.”

Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani,Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret.they petitioned him to lodge there.Et mansit ibi duos dies. And he lodged there for two days.

Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem ejus. And many more believed in him, because of his own word.

Et mulieri dicebant:And they said to the woman:Quia jam non propter tuam loquelam credimus:“Now we believe, not because of your speech, ipsi enim audivimus, but because we ourselves have heard him,et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi.and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”

Post duos autem dies exiit inde,Then, after two days, he departed from there,et abiit in Galilæam.and he traveled into Galilee.

Ipse enim Jesus testimonium perhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet. For Jesus himself offered testimony that a Prophet has no honor in his own country.

Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam,And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, exceperunt eum Galilæi,the Galileans received him,cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Jerosolymis in die festo:because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast.et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum. For they also went to the feast day.

Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ,Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, ubi fecit aquam vinum.where he made water into wine.Et erat quidam regulus,And there was a certain ruler, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.whose son was sick at Capernaum.

Hic cum audisset quia Jesus adveniret a Judæa in Galilæam,Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, abiit ad eum,he sent to himet rogabat eum ut descenderet, and begged him to come downet sanaret filium ejus:and heal his son.incipiebat enim mori. For he was beginning to die.

Dixit ergo Jesus ad eum:Therefore,Nisi signaJesus said to him,et prodigia videritis,“Unless you have seen signs and wonders, non creditis.you do not believe.”

Dicit ad eum regulus:The ruler said to him,Domine,“Lord, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus.come down before my son dies.”

Dicit ei Jesus:Jesus said to him,Vade,“Go,filius tuus vivit.your son lives.”Credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Jesus,The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him,et ibat.and so he went away.

Jam autem eo descendente,Then, as he was going down, servi occurrerunt ei,his servants met him.et nuntiaverunt dicentes,And they reported to him, quia filius ejus viveret.saying that his son was alive.

Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better.Et dixerunt ei:And they said to him,Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.“Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”

Cognovit ergo pater,Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus:“Your son lives.”Filius tuus vivit; And both heet credidit ipse et domus ejus tota.and his entire household believed.

Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Jesus,This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, cum venisset a Judæa in Galilæam.after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.
