Post hæc autem ambulabat Jesus in Galilæam:Then, after these things, Jesus was walking in Galilee.non enim volebat in Judæam ambulare,For he was not willing to walk in Judea, quia quærebant eum Judæi interficere.because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

Erat autem in proximo dies festus Judæorum,Now the feast day of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles,Scenopegia.was near.

Dixerunt autem ad eum fratres ejus:And his brothers said to him:Transi hinc, et vade in Judæam,“Move away from here and go into Judea,ut et discipuli tui videant opera tua, quæ facis.so that your disciples there may also see your works that you do.

Nemo quippe in occulto quid facit,Of course, no one does anything in secret,et quærit ipse in palam esse:but he himself seeks to be in the public view.si hæc facis,Since you do these things, manifesta teipsum mundo.manifest yourself to the world.”

Neque enim fratres ejus credebant in eum.For neither did his brothers believe in him.

Dicit ergo eis Jesus:Therefore, Jesus said to them:Tempus meum nondum advenit:“My time has not yet come;tempus autem vestrum semper est paratum.but your time is always at hand.

Non potest mundus odisse vos:The world cannot hate you.me autem odit,But it hates me,quia ego testimonium perhibeo de illo quod opera ejus mala sunt.because I offer testimony about it, that its works are evil.

Vos ascendite ad diem festum hunc,You may go up to this feast day.ego autem non ascendo ad diem festum istum:But I am not going up to this feast day, quia meum tempus nondum impletum est.because my time has not yet been fulfilled.”

Hæc cum dixisset,When he had said these things, ipse mansit in Galilæa.he himself remained in Galilee.

Ut autem ascenderunt fratres ejus,But after his brothers went up,tuncthen he also went up to the feast day,et ipse ascendit ad diem festum non manifeste, not openly, sed quasi in occulto.but as if in secret.

Judæi ergo quærebant eum in die festo,Therefore, the Jews were seeking him on the feast day,et dicebant: Ubi est ille?and they were saying, “Where is he?”

Et murmur multum erat in turba de eo.And there was much murmuring in the crowd concerning him.Quidam enim dicebant:For certain ones were saying,Quia bonus est.“He is good.”Alii autem dicebant:But others were saying,Non,“No,sed seducit turbas.for he seduces the crowds.”

Nemo tamen palam loquebatur de illo propter metum Judæorum.Yet no one was speaking openly about him, out of fear of the Jews.

Jam autem die festo mediante,Then, about the middle of the feast, ascendit Jesus in templum, et docebat.Jesus ascended into the temple, and he was teaching.

Et mirabantur Judæi,And the Jews wondered, dicentes:saying:Quomodo hic litteras scit,“How does this one know letters, cum non didicerit?though he has not been taught?”

Respondit eis Jesus,Jesus responded to themet dixit:and said:Mea doctrina non est mea,“My doctrine is not of me,sed ejus qui misit me.but of him who sent me.

Si quis voluerit voluntatem ejus facere,If anyone has chosen to do his will, then he will realize, cognoscet de doctrina, about the doctrine, utrum ex Deo sit, whether it is from God,an ego a meipso loquar.or whether I am speaking from myself.

Qui a semetipso loquitur, gloriam propriam quærit;Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory.qui autem quærit gloriam ejus qui misit eum,But whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him,hic verax est, this one is true,et injustitia in illo non est.and injustice is not in him.

Nonne Moyses dedit vobis legem:Did not Moses give you the law?et nemo ex vobis facit legem? And yet not one among you keeps the law!

Quid me quæritis interficere? Why are you seeking to kill me?”Respondit turba,The crowd respondedet dixit:and said:Dæmonium habes:“You must have a demon.quis te quærit interficere?Who is seeking to kill you?”

Respondit Jesus et dixit eis:Jesus responded and said to them:Unum opus feci,“One work have I done,et omnes miramini:and you all wonder.

propterea Moyses dedit vobis circumcisionem (non quia ex Moyse est,For Moses gave you circumcision, sed ex patribus),(not that it is of Moses,et in sabbato circumciditis hominem.but of the fathers) and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

Si circumcisionem accipit homo in sabbato,If a man can receive circumcision on the Sabbath,ut non solvatur lex Moysi:so that the law of Moses may not be broken, mihi indignamini quia totum hominem sanum feci in sabbato?why are you indignant toward me, because I have made a man whole on the Sabbath?

Nolite judicare secundum faciem,Do not judge according to appearances, sed justum judicium judicate.but instead judge a just judgment.”

Dicebant ergo quidam ex Jerosolymis:Therefore,Nonne hic est, some of those from Jerusalem said:quem quærunt interficere?“Is he not the one whom they are seeking to kill?

et ecce palam loquitur,And behold, he is speaking openly,et nihil ei dicunt.and they say nothing to him.Numquid vere cognoverunt principes quia hic est Christus?Could the leaders have decided that it is true this one is the Christ?

Sed hunc scimus unde sit:But we know him and where he is from.Christus autem cum venerit,And when the Christ has arrived, nemo scit unde sit.no one will know where he is from.”

Clamabat ergo Jesus in templo docens,Therefore, Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying:et dicens:“You know me,Et me scitis, et unde sim scitis:and you also know where I am from.et a meipso non veni, sed est verus qui misit me,And I have not arrived of myself, but he who sent me is true, quem vos nescitis.and him you do not know.

Ego scio eum:I know him.quia ab ipso sum,For I am from him,et ipse me misit.and he has sent me.”

Quærebant ergo eum apprehendere:Therefore, they were seeking to apprehend him,et nemo misit in illum manus, and yet no one laid hands on him, quia nondum venerat hora ejus.because his hour had not yet come.

De turba autem multi crediderunt in eum,But many among the crowd believed in him,et dicebant:and they were saying,Christus cum venerit,“When the Christ arrives, numquid plura signa faciet quam quæ hic facit?will he perform more signs than this man does?”

Audierunt pharisæi turbam murmurantem de illo hæc:The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him.et miserunt principes et pharisæi ministros ut apprehenderent eum.And the leaders and the Pharisees sent attendants to apprehend him.

Dixit ergo eis Jesus:Therefore, Jesus said to them:Adhuc modicum tempus vobiscum sum:“For a brief time, I am still with you,et vado ad eum qui me misit.and then I am going to him who sent me.

Quæretis me,You shall seek me,et non invenietis:and you will not find me.et ubi ego sum,And where I am,vos non potestis venire.you are not able to go.”

Dixerunt ergo Judæi ad semetipsos:And so the Jews said among themselves:Quo hic iturus est,“Where is this place to which he will go,quia non inveniemus eum?such that we will not find him?numquid in dispersionem gentium iturus est,Will he go to those dispersed among the Gentileset docturus gentes?and teach the Gentiles?

quis est hic sermo, quem dixit:What is this word that he spoke,Quæretis me, et non invenietis:‘You will seek me and you will not find me;et ubi sum ego,and where I am,vos non potestis venire?you are not able to go?’”

In novissimo autem die magno festivitatis stabat Jesus,Then, on the last great day of the feast, Jesus was standing and crying out,et clamabat dicens: Si quis sitit, saying: “If anyone thirsts, veniat ad me et bibat.let him come to me and drink:

Qui credit in me,whoever believes in me,sicut dicit Scriptura, just as Scripture says, flumina de ventre ejus fluent aquæ vivæ.‘From his chest shall flow rivers of living water.’”

Hoc autem dixit de Spiritu,Now he said this about the Spirit, quem accepturi erant credentes in eum:which those who believe in him would soon be receiving.nondum enim erat Spiritus datus,For the Spirit had not yet been given, quia Jesus nondum erat glorificatus.because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Ex illa ergo turba cum audissent hos sermones ejus,Therefore, some from that crowd, when they had heard these words of his, dicebant:were saying,Hic est vere propheta.“This one truly is the Prophet.”

Alii dicebant:Others were saying,Hic est Christus.“He is the Christ.”Quidam autem dicebant:Yet certain ones were saying:Numquid a Galilæa venit Christus?“Does the Christ come from Galilee?

nonne Scriptura dicit: Quia ex semine David, et de Bethlehem castello,Does Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, ubi erat David, venit Christus?the town where David was?”

Dissensio itaque facta est in turba propter eum.And so there arose a dissension among the multitude because of him.

Quidam autem ex ipsis volebant apprehendere eum:Now certain ones among them wanted to apprehend him,sed nemo misit super eum manus.but no one laid hands upon him.

Venerunt ergo ministri ad pontificesTherefore,et pharisæos.the attendants went to the high priests and the Pharisees.Et dixerunt eis illi:And they said to them,Quare non adduxistis illum?“Why have you not brought him?”

Responderunt ministri:The attendants responded,Numquam sic locutus est homo, sicut hic homo.“Never has a man spoken like this man.”

Responderunt ergo eis pharisæi:And so the Pharisees answered them:Numquid et vos seducti estis?“Have you also been seduced?

numquid ex principibus aliquis credidit in eum,Have any of the leaders believed in him,aut ex pharisæis?or any of the Pharisees?

sed turba hæc,But this crowd,quæ non novit legem, which does not know the law, maledicti sunt.they are accursed.”

Dixit Nicodemus ad eos,Nicodemus, ille qui venit ad eum nocte, the one who came to him by night and who was one of them, qui unus erat ex ipsis:said to them,

Numquid lex nostra judicat hominem,“Does our law judge a man, nisi prius audierit ab ipso, unless it has first heard himet cognoverit quid faciat?and has known what he has done?”

Responderunt,They respondedet dixerunt ei:and said to him:Numquid et tu Galilæus es?“Are you also a Galilean?scrutare Scripturas,Study the Scriptures,et vide quia a Galilæa propheta non surgit.and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee.”

Et reversi sunt unusquisque in domum suam. And each one returned to his own house.
