Jesus autem perrexit in montem Oliveti:But Jesus continued on to the Mount of Olives.
et diluculo iterum venit in templum,And early in the morning, he went again to the temple;et omnis populus venit ad eum,and all the people came to him.et sedens docebat eos.And sitting down, he taught them.
Adducunt autem scribæ et pharisæi mulierem in adulterio deprehensam:Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery,et statuerunt eam in medio, and they stood her in front of them.
et dixerunt ei:And they said to him:Magister,“Teacher,hæc mulier modo deprehensa est in adulterio.this woman was just now caught in adultery.
In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis hujusmodi lapidare. And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore,Tu ergo quid dicis?what do you say?”
Hoc autem dicebant tentantes eum,But they were saying this to test him,ut possent accusare eum.so that they might be able to accuse him.Jesus autem inclinans se deorsum,Then Jesus bent downdigito scribebat in terra.and wrote with his finger on the earth.
Cum ergo perseverarent interrogantes eum,And then, erexit se,when they persevered in questioning him,et dixit eis:he stood uprightQui sine peccato est vestrum, and said to them, primus in illam lapidem mittat.“Let whoever is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
Et iterum se inclinans,And bending down again, scribebat in terra.he wrote on the earth.
Audientes autem unus post unum exibant,But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, incipientes a senioribus:beginning with the eldest.et remansit solus Jesus,And Jesus alone remained,et mulier in medio stans.with the woman standing in front of him.
Erigens autem se Jesus,Then Jesus, raising himself up,dixit ei:said to her:Mulier,“Woman, ubi sunt qui te accusabant?where are those who accused you?nemo te condemnavit?Has no one condemned you?”
Quæ dixit:And she said,Nemo,“No one,Domine.Lord.”Dixit autem Jesus:Then Jesus said:Nec ego te condemnabo:“Neither will I condemn you.vade,Go,et jam amplius noli peccare.and now do not choose to sin anymore.”
Iterum ergo locutus est eis Jesus,Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying:dicens: Ego sum lux mundi:“I am the light of the world.qui sequitur me, non ambulat in tenebris,Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, sed habebit lumen vitæ.but shall have the light of life.”
Dixerunt ergo ei pharisæi:And so the Pharisees said to him,Tu de teipso testimonium perhibes;“You offer testimony about yourself;testimonium tuum non est verum.your testimony is not true.”
Respondit Jesus,Jesus respondedet dixit eis:and said to them:Et si ego testimonium perhibeo de meipso,“Even though I offer testimony about myself, verum est testimonium meum:my testimony is true, quia scio unde veni et quo vado;for I know where I came fromvos autem nescitis unde venio aut quo vado.and where I am going.
Vos secundum carnem judicatis:You judge according to the flesh.ego non judico quemquam;I do not judge anyone.
et si judico ego,And when I do judge, judicium meum verum est,my judgment is true.quia solus non sum:For I am not alone, sed ego et qui misit me,but it is I and he who sent me:Pater.the Father.
Et in lege vestra scriptum est, quia duorum hominum testimonium verum est.And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.
Ego sum qui testimonium perhibeo de meipso,I am one who offers testimony about myself,et testimonium perhibet de me qui misit me, Pater.and the Father who sent me offers testimony about me.”
Dicebant ergo ei:Therefore,Ubi est Pater tuus?they said to him,Respondit Jesus:“Where is your Father?”Neque me scitis,Jesus answered:neque Patrem meum:“You know neither me,si me sciretis, nor my Father.forsitanIf you did know me,et Patrem meum sciretis.perhaps you would know my Father also.”
Hæc verba locutus est Jesus in gazophylacio,Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, docens in templo:while teaching in the temple.et nemo apprehendit eum,And no one apprehended him, quia necdum venerat hora ejus.because his hour had not yet come.
Dixit ergo iterum eis Jesus:Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them:Ego vado,“I am going,et quæretis me, et in peccato vestro moriemini.and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin.Quo ego vado,Where I am going, vos non potestis venire.you are not able to go.”
Dicebant ergo Judæi:And so the Jews said,Numquid interficiet semetipsum,“Is he going to kill himself, quia dixit:for he said:Quo ego vado,‘Where I am going, vos non potestis venire?you are not able to go?’”
Et dicebat eis:And he said to them:Vos de deorsum estis,“You are from below.ego de supernis sum.I am from above.Vos de mundo hoc estis,You are of this world.ego non sum de hoc mundo.I am not of this world.
Dixi ergo vobis quia moriemini in peccatis vestris:Therefore, I said to you, that you will die in your sins.si enim non credideritis quia ego sum,For if you will not believe that I am,moriemini in peccato vestro.you will die in your sin.”
Dicebant ergo ei:And so they said to him,Tu quis es?“Who are you?”Dixit eis Jesus:Jesus said to them:Principium,“The Beginning, qui et loquor vobis.who is also speaking to you.
Multa habeo de vobis loqui, et judicare;I have much to say about you and to judge.sed qui me misit, verax est;But he who sent me is true.et ego quæ audivi ab eo,And what I have heard from him,hæc loquor in mundo.this I speak within the world.”
Et non cognoverunt quia Patrem ejus dicebat Deum. And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father.
Dixit ergo eis Jesus:And so Jesus said to them:Cum exaltaveritis Filium hominis,“When you will have lifted up the Son of man, tunc cognoscetis quia ego sum, then you shall realize that I am,et a meipso facio nihil, and that I do nothing of myself, sed sicut docuit me Pater, but just as the Father has taught me,hæc loquor:so do I speak.
et qui me misit, mecum est,And he who sent me is with me,et non reliquit me solum:and he has not abandoned me alone.quia ego quæ placita sunt ei, facio semper. For I always do what is pleasing to him.”
Hæc illo loquente,As he was speaking these things, multi crediderunt in eum.many believed in him.
Dicebat ergo Jesus ad eos, qui crediderunt ei,Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him:Judæos: Si vos manseritis in sermone meo,“If you will abide in my word, vere discipuli mei eritis, you will truly be my disciples.
et cognoscetis veritatem,And you shall know the truth,et veritas liberabit vos.and the truth shall set you free.”
Responderunt ei:They answered him:Semen Abrahæ sumus,“We are the offspring of Abraham,et nemini servivimus umquam:and we have never been a slave to anyone.quomodo tu dicis:How can you say,Liberi eritis?‘You shall be set free?’”
Respondit eis Jesus:Jesus answered them:Amen,“Amen, amen dico vobis:amen, quia omnis qui facit peccatum,I say to you, servus est peccati.that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
Servus autem non manet in domo in æternum:Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity.filius autem manet in æternum.Yet the Son does abide in eternity.
Si ergo vos filius liberaverit,Therefore, if the Son has set you free, vere liberi eritis.then you will truly be free.
Scio quia filii Abrahæ estis:I know that you are sons of Abraham.sed quæritis me interficere,But you are seeking to kill me,quia sermo meus non capit in vobis.because my word has not taken hold in you.
Ego quod vidi apud Patrem meum, loquor:I speak what I have seen with my Father.et vos quæ vidistis apud patrem vestrum, facitis. And you do what you have seen with your father.”
Responderunt,They respondedet dixerunt ei:and said to him,Pater noster Abraham est.“Abraham is our father.”Dicit eis Jesus:Jesus said to them:Si filii Abrahæ estis,“If you are the sons of Abraham, opera Abrahæ facite.then do the works of Abraham.
Nunc autem quæritis me interficere,But now you are seeking to kill me,hominem, qui veritatem vobis locutus sum,a man who has spoken the truth to you, quam audivi a Deo:which I have heard from God.hoc Abraham non fecit. This is not what Abraham did.
Vos facitis opera patris vestri. You do the works of your father.”Dixerunt itaque ei:Therefore, they said to him:Nos ex fornicatione non sumus nati:“We were not born out of fornication.unum patrem habemus Deum.We have one father: God.”
Dixit ergo eis Jesus:Then Jesus said to them:Si Deus pater vester esset,“If God were your father, diligeretis utique et me;certainly you would love me.ego enim ex Deo processi,For I proceededet veni:and came from God.neque enim a meipso veni,For I did not come from myself, sed ille me misit.but he sent me.
Quare loquelam meam non cognoscitis? Why do you not recognize my speech?Quia non potestis audire sermonem meum.It is because you are not able to hear my word.
Vos ex patre diabolo estis:You are of your father, the devil.et desideria patris vestri vultis facere. And you will carry out the desires of your father.Ille homicida erat ab initio,He was a murderer from the beginning.et in veritate non stetit:And he did not stand in the truth, quia non est veritas in eo:because the truth is not in him.cum loquitur mendacium, ex propriis loquitur,When he speaks a lie, he speaks it from his own self.quia mendax est, et pater ejus. For he is a liar, and the father of lies.
Ego autem si veritatem dico,But if I speak the truth, non creditis mihi.you do not believe me.
Quis ex vobis arguet me de peccato?Which of you can convict me of sin?si veritatem dico vobis,If I speak the truth to you, quare non creditis mihi?why do you not believe me?
Qui ex Deo est,Whoever is of God,verba Dei audit.hears the words of God.Propterea vos non auditis,For this reason, you do not hear them:quia ex Deo non estis.because you are not of God.”
Responderunt ergo Judæi,Therefore,et dixerunt ei:the Jews responded and said to him,Nonne bene dicimus nos quia Samaritanus es tu,“Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan,et dæmonium habes?and that you have a demon?”
Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Ego dæmonium non habeo:“I do not have a demon.sed honorifico Patrem meum,But I honor my Father,et vos inhonorastis me.and you have dishonored me.
Ego autem non quæro gloriam meam:But I am not seeking my own glory.est qui quærat,There is One who seekset judicet.and judges.
Amen,Amen, amen dico vobis:amen, I say to you,si quis sermonem meum servaverit,if anyone will have kept my word, mortem non videbit in æternum.he will not see death for eternity.”
Dixerunt ergo Judæi:Therefore, the Jews said:Nunc cognovimus quia dæmonium habes.“Now we know that you have a demon.Abraham mortuus est, et prophetæ;Abraham is dead, and the Prophets;et tu dicis:and yet you say,Si quis sermonem meum servaverit,‘If anyone will have kept my word, non gustabit mortem in æternum.he shall not taste death for eternity.’
Numquid tu major es patre nostro Abraham,Are you greater than our father Abraham, qui mortuus est?who is dead?et prophetæ mortui sunt. And the prophets are dead.Quem teipsum facis? So who do you make yourself to be?”
Respondit Jesus:Jesus responded:Si ego glorifico meipsum,“If I glorify myself, gloria mea nihil est:my glory is nothing.est Pater meus, qui glorificat me,It is my Father who glorifies me.quem vos dicitis quia Deus vester est,And you say about him that he is your God.
et non cognovistis eum:And yet you have not known him.ego autem novi eum.But I know him.Et si dixero quia non scio eum,And if I were to say that I do not know him,ero similis vobis, then I would be like you, mendax.a liar.Sed scio eum,But I know him,et sermonem ejus servo.and I keep his word.
Abraham pater vester exsultavit ut videret diem meum:Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he might see my day;vidit, et gavisus est.he saw it and was glad.”
Dixerunt ergo Judæi ad eum:And so the Jews said to him,Quinquaginta annos nondum habes,“You have not yet reached fifty years,et Abraham vidisti?and you have seen Abraham?”
Dixit eis Jesus:Jesus said to them,Amen,“Amen,amen dico vobis,amen, I say to you,antequam Abraham fieret,before Abraham was made,ego sum.I am.”
Tulerunt ergo lapides,Therefore,ut jacerent in eum:they took up stones to cast at him.Jesus autem abscondit se,But Jesus hid himself,et exivit de templo.and he departed from the temple.
