Quod fuit ab initio,He who was from the beginning, quod audivimus, whom we have heard, quod vidimus oculis nostris, whom we have seen with our eyes, quod perspeximus, upon whom we have gazed,et manus nostræ contrectaverunt de verbo vitæ:and whom our hands have certainly touched: He is the Word of Life.

et vita manifestata est,And that Life has been made manifest.et vidimus,And we have seen,et testamur, and we testify,et annuntiamus vobis vitam æternam, and we announce to you: the Eternal Life,quæ erat apud Patrem, who was with the Father,et apparuit nobis:and who appeared to us.

quod vidimus et audivimus,He whom we have seen and heard, annuntiamus vobis,we announce to you,ut et vos societatem habeatis nobiscum,so that you, too, may have fellowship with us,et societas nostra sit cum Patre, et cum Filio ejus Jesu Christo.and so that our fellowship may be with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Et hæc scribimus vobis ut gaudeatis,And this we write to you, so that you may rejoice,et gaudium vestrum sit plenum.and so that your joy may be full.

Et hæc est annuntiatio, quam audivimus ab eo,And this is the announcement which we have heard from him,et annuntiamus vobis: quoniam Deus lux est,and which we announce to you: that God is light,et tenebræ in eo non sunt ullæ.and in him there is no darkness.

Si dixerimus quoniam societatem habemus cum eo,If we claim that we have fellowship with him,et in tenebris ambulamus, and yet we walk in darkness, mentimur, then we are lyinget veritatem non facimus.and not telling the truth.

Si autem in luce ambulamus sicutBut if we walk in the light,et ipse est in luce, just as he also is in the light, societatem habemus ad invicem, then we have fellowship with one another,et sanguis Jesu Christi, and the blood of Jesus Christ,Filii ejus, his Son,emundat nos ab omni peccato.cleanses us from all sin.

Si dixerimus quoniam peccatum non habemus,If we claim that we have no sin, ipsi nos seducimus, then we are deceiving ourselveset veritas in nobis non est.and the truth is not in us.

Si confiteamur peccata nostra:If we confess our sins, fidelis est, then he is faithfulet justus, and just,ut remittat nobis peccata nostra,so as to forgive us our sinset emundet nos ab omni iniquitate.and to cleanse us from all iniquity.

Si dixerimus quoniam non peccavimus,If we claim that we have not sinned, mendacem facimus eum, then we make him a liar,et verbum ejus non est in nobis.and his Word is not in us.
