Filioli mei,My little sons,hæc scribo vobis, this I write to you,ut non peccetis.so that you may not sin.SedBut if anyone has sinned,et si quis peccaverit,we have an Advocate with the Father, advocatum habemus apud Patrem,Jesus Christ,Jesum Christum justum:the Just One.
et ipse est propitiatio pro peccatis nostris:And he is the propitiation for our sins.non pro nostris autem tantum,And not only for our sins, sed etiam pro totius mundi.but also for those of the whole world.
Et in hoc scimus quoniam cognovimus eum,And we can be sure that we have known him by this:si mandata ejus observemus.if we observe his commandments.
Qui dicit se nosse eum,Whoever claims that he knows him,et mandata ejus non custodit, and yet does not keep his commandments, mendax est,is a liar,et in hoc veritas non est.and the truth is not in him.
Qui autem servat verbum ejus,But whoever keeps his word, vere in hoc caritas Dei perfecta est:truly in him the charity of God is perfected.et in hoc scimus quoniam in ipso sumus. And by this we know that we are in him.
Qui dicit se in ipso manere, debet,Whoever declares himself to remain in him, sicut ille ambulavit, et ipse ambulare.ought to walk just as he himself walked.
Carissimi,Most beloved, non mandatum novum scribo vobis,I am not writing to you a new commandment, sed mandatum vetus, but the old commandment, quod habuistis ab initio.which you had from the beginning.Mandatum vetus est verbum,The old commandment is the Word, quod audistis.which you have heard.
Iterum mandatum novum scribo vobis,Then too, quod verum est et in ipso,I am writing to you a new commandment,et in vobis:which is the Truth in him and in you.quia tenebræ transierunt,For the darkness has passed away,et verum lumen jam lucet.and the true Light is now shining.
Qui dicit se in luce esse,Whoever declares himself to be in the light,et fratrem suum odit, and yet hates his brother,in tenebris est usque adhuc.is in the darkness even now.
Qui diligit fratrem suum, in lumine manet,Whoever loves his brother abides in the light,et scandalum in eo non est.and there is no cause of offense in him.
Qui autem odit fratrem suum, in tenebris est,But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness,et in tenebris ambulat, and in darkness he walks,et nescit quo eat: quia tenebræ obcæcaverunt oculos ejus.and he does not know where he is going. For the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Scribo vobis,I am writing to you, filioli, little sons, quoniam remittuntur vobis peccata propter nomen ejus.because your sins are forgiven for the sake of his name.
Scribo vobis,I am writing to you, patres, fathers, quoniam cognovistis eum, qui ab initio est.because you have known him who is from the beginning.Scribo vobis,I am writing to you, adolescentes, quoniam vicistis malignum.adolescents, because you have overcome the evil one.
Scribo vobis,I am writing to you, infantes, little children, quoniam cognovistis patrem.because you have known the Father.Scribo vobis juvenes,I am writing to you, young men, quoniam fortes estis, because you are strong,et verbum Dei manet in vobis, and the Word of God abides in you,et vicistis malignum.and you have overcome the evil one.
Nolite diligere mundum,Do not choose to love the world, neque ea quæ in mundo sunt.nor the things that are in the world.Si quis diligit mundum,If anyone loves the world, non est caritas Patris in eo:the charity of the Father is not in him.
quoniam omne quod est in mundo, concupiscentia carnis est,For all that is in the world is the desire of the flesh,et concupiscentia oculorum, and the desire of the eyes,et superbia vitæ: quæ non est ex Patre, and the arrogance of a life which is not of the Father, sed ex mundo est.but is of the world.
Et mundus transit,And the world is passing away,et concupiscentia ejus:with its desire.qui autem facit voluntatem Dei manet in æternum. But whoever does the will of God abides unto eternity.
Filioli,Little sons, novissima hora est:it is the last hour. And,et sicut audistis quia antichristus venit,as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming,et nunc antichristi multi facti sunt;so now many antichrists have arrived.unde scimus, quia novissima hora est.By this, we know that it is the last hour.
Ex nobis prodierunt,They went out from among us,sed non erant ex nobis, but they were not of us.nam,For,si fuissent ex nobis,if they had been of us,permansissent utique nobiscum:certainly they would have remained with us.sed ut manifesti sint quoniam non sunt omnes ex nobis. But in this way, it is made manifest that none of them are of us.
Sed vos unctionem habetis a Sancto,Yet you have the anointing of the Holy One,et nostis omnia.and you know everything.
Non scripsi vobis quasi ignorantibus veritatem,I have not written to you as to ones who are ignorant of the truth, sed quasi scientibus eam:but as to ones who know the truth.et quoniam omne mendacium ex veritate non est.For no lie is of the truth.
Quis est mendax,Who is a liar, nisi is qui negat quoniam Jesus est Christus?other than he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?Hic est antichristus,This one is the Antichrist, qui negat Patrem, who denies the Fatheret Filium.and the Son.
Omnis qui negat Filium, nec Patrem habet:No one who denies the Son also has the Father.qui confitetur Filium,Whoever confesses the Son,et Patrem habet.also has the Father.
Vos quod audistis ab initio, in vobis permaneat:As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you.si in vobis permanserit quod audistis ab initio,If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, then you,et vos in Filio et Patre manebitis.too, shall abide in the Son and in the Father.
Et hæc est repromissio,And this is the Promise, quam ipse pollicitus est nobis, which he himself has promised to us:vitam æternam.Eternal Life.
Hæc scripsi vobis de his,I have written these things to you,qui seducant vos.because of those who would seduce you.
Et vos unctionem,But as for you, quam accepistis ab eo,let the Anointing that you have received from him abide in you.maneat in vobis. And so,Et non necesse habetis ut aliquis doceat vos:you have no need of anyone to teach you.sed sicut unctio ejus docet vos de omnibus,For his Anointing teaches you about everything,et verum est,and it is the truth,et non est mendacium.and it is not a lie.Et sicut docuit vos:And just as his Anointing has taught you, manete in eo.abide in him.
Et nunc,And now, filioli, little sons, manete in eo:abide in him,ut cum apparuerit,so that when he appears, habeamus fiduciam,we may have faith,et non confundamur ab eo in adventu ejus.and we may not be confounded by him at his advent.
Si scitis quoniam justus est,If you know that he is just, scitote quoniam et omnis, then know, qui facit justitiam, too,ex ipso natus est.that all who do what is just are born of him.
