Senior Gajo carissimo,The Elder, to Gaius,quem ego diligo in veritate.most beloved, whom I love in the truth.
Carissime,Most beloved,de omnibus orationem facio prospere te ingredi,concerning everything,et valere sicut prospere agit anima tua.I make it my prayer that you may benefit by advancing and succeeding in whatever may be to the benefit of your soul.
Gavisus sum valde venientibus fratribus,I was very glad when the brothers arrived,et testimonium perhibentibus veritati tuæ,and when they offered testimony to the truth in you,sicut tu in veritate ambulas.that you are walking in the truth.
Majorem horum non habeo gratiam,I have no greater grace than this,quam ut audiam filios meos in veritate ambulare.when I hear that my sons are walking in the truth.
Carissime,Most beloved,fideliter facis quidquid operaris in fratres,you should act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers,et hoc in peregrinos,and those who are sojourners;
qui testimonium reddiderunt caritati tuæ in conspectu ecclesiæ:they have given testimony to your charity in the sight of the Church.quos, benefaciens, deduces digne Deo.You would do well to lead these ones worthily to God.
Pro nomine enim ejus profecti sunt,For they set out, on behalf of his name,nihil accipientes a gentibus.accepting nothing from the unbelievers.
Nos ergo debemus suscipere hujusmodi,Therefore, we must accept such as these,ut cooperatores simus veritatis.in order that we may cooperate with the truth.
Scripsissem forsitan ecclesiæ:As it happens, I had written to the church.sed is qui amat primatum gerere in eis, Diotrephes,But Diotrephes, who loves to bear the highest rank among them,non recipit nos:would not accept us.
propter hoc si venero,Because of this,commonebo ejus opera,when I come,quæ facit,I will admonish his works which he does,verbis malignis garriens in nos:babbling against us with malicious words.et quasi non ei ista sufficiant,And as if this were not sufficient for him,neque ipse suscipit fratres:he himself does not receive the brothers.et eos qui suscipiunt,And those who do receive them,prohibet,he hinders,et de ecclesia ejicit.and he ejects them from the church.
Carissime,Most beloved,noli imitari malum,do not be willing to imitate what is evil;sed quod bonum est.instead imitate what is good.Qui benefacit, ex Deo est:Whoever does good is of God.qui malefacit, non vidit Deum.Whoever does evil has not seen God.
Demetrio testimonium redditur ab omnibus,Testimony is being given for Demetrius by everyone,et ab ipsa veritate,and by the truth itself.sed et nos testimonium perhibemus:And we also offer testimony.et nosti quoniam testimonium nostrum verum est.And you know that our testimony is true.
Multa habui tibi scribere:I had many things to write to you,sed nolui per atramentum et calamum scribere tibi.but I am not willing, through ink and pen, to write to you.
Spero autem protinus te videre,Yet I hope to see you soon,et os ad os loquemur.and then we will speak face to face.Pax tibi.Peace to you.Salutant te amici.The friends greet you.Saluta amicos nominatim.Greet the friends by name.
