Vir erat in terra Hus, nomine Job:There was a man in the land of Uz named Job,et erat vir ille simplex, et rectus, and he was a simple and honest man,ac timens Deum, et recedens a malo.fearing God and withdrawing from evil.

Natique sunt ei septem filii,And there had been born to him seven sonset tres filiæ.and three daughters.

Et fuit possessio ejus septem millia ovium,And his possession was seven thousand sheep,et tria millia camelorum, and three thousand camels, quingenta quoque juga boum, along with five hundred pairs of oxenet quingentæ asinæ,and five hundred she-donkeys,ac familia multa nimis:and also a very large family.eratque vir ille magnus inter omnes orientales. And this man was great among all the people of the east.

Et ibant filii ejus, et faciebant convivium per domos,And his sons went and made a feast by houses, unusquisque in die suo.each one on his day.Et mittentes vocabant tres sorores suas, ut comederent et biberent cum eis.And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Cumque in orbem transissent dies convivii,And when the days of their feasting had been completed, mittebat ad eos Job, et sanctificabat illos:Job sent to them and sanctified them, consurgensque diluculo, and, getting up at dawn, offerebat holocausta pro singulis.he offered holocausts for each one.Dicebat enim:For he said,Ne forte peccaverint filii mei, et benedixerint Deo in cordibus suis.“Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.”Sic faciebat Job cunctis diebus. So Job did all the days.

Quadam autem die,But on a certain day,cum venissent filii Dei ut assisterent coram Domino, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, affuit inter eos etiam Satan.Satan also arrived among them.

Cui dixit Dominus:The Lord said to him,Unde venis?“Where do you come from?”Qui respondens,Answering, ait:he said,Circuivi terram,“I have circled the land,et perambulavi eam.and walked around in it.”

Dixitque Dominus ad eum:And the Lord said to him,Numquid considerasti servum meum Job,“Have you not considered my servant, quod non sit ei similis in terra,Job?homo simplex et rectus,For there is no one like him in the land,ac timens Deum,a simple and honest man,et recedens a malo?fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”

Cui respondens Satan,Answering him, ait:Satan said,Numquid Job frustra timet Deum?“Does Job fear God to no purpose?

nonne tu vallasti eum,Have you not fortified him,ac domum ejus,as well as his houseuniversamque substantiam per circuitum;and every one of his belongings around him, operibus manuum ejus benedixisti, blessed the works of his hands,et possessio ejus crevit in terra?and his possession has increased in the land?

sed extende paululum manum tuamBut extend your hand a little,et tange cuncta quæ possidet, and touch all that he possesses, nisi in faciem benedixerit tibi.and see if he still praises you to your face.”

Dixit ergo Dominus ad Satan:Therefore, the Lord said to Satan,Ecce universa quæ habet in manu tua sunt:“Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, tantum in eum ne extendas manum tuam.only do not extend your hand against him.”Egressusque est Satan a facie Domini. And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.

Cum autem quadam die filii et filiæ ejus comederent et biberent vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti,So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,

nuntius venit ad Job,a messenger came to Job,qui diceret:who said,Boves arabant,“The oxen were plowing,et asinæ pascebantur juxta eos:and the donkeys were grazing beside them,

et irruerunt Sabæi, tuleruntque omnia, and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything,et pueros percusserunt gladio:and they struck the servants with the sword;et evasi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.and I alone evaded them to tell you.”

Cumque adhuc ille loqueretur,And while he was still speaking, venit alter, another arrived,et dixit:and he said,Ignis Dei cecidit e cælo,“The fire of God fell from heaven,et tactas oves puerosque consumpsit:and, having struck the sheep and the servants,et effugi ego solus, ut nuntiarem tibi.it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”

Sed et illo adhuc loquente,And while he also was still speaking, venit alius, another arrived,et dixit:and he said,Chaldæi fecerunt tres turmas,“The Chaldeans organized three attacks,et invaserunt camelos, and advanced on the camelset tulerunt eos,and took them;necnon et pueros percusserunt gladio:and not only that,et ego fugi solus, but they have struck the servants with the sword;ut nuntiarem tibi.and I alone fled to tell you.”

Adhuc loquebatur ille,He was still speaking,et ecce alius intravit, and behold, another entered,et dixit:and he said,Filiis tuis et filiabus vescentibus et bibentibus vinum in domo fratris sui primogeniti,“Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,

repente ventus vehemens irruit a regione deserti, when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desertet concussit quatuor angulos domus:and shook the four corners of the house,quæ corruens oppressit liberos tuos, which collapsedet mortui sunt:and crushed your children,et effugi ego solus, and they are dead;ut nuntiarem tibi.and I alone escaped to tell you.”

Tunc surrexit Job, et scidit vestimenta sua:Then Job got up and tore his garments, and,et tonso capite corruens in terram, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, adoravit, and worshipped,

et dixit:and he said,Nudus egressus sum de utero matris meæ,“Naked I departed from my mother’s womb,et nudus revertar illuc.and naked I shall return.Dominus dedit,The Lord gave,Dominus abstulit;and the Lord has taken away.sicut Domino placuit,Just as it pleased the Lord, ita factum est.so has it been done.Sit nomen Domini benedictum.Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

In omnibus his non peccavit Job labiis suis,In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, neque stultum quid contra Deum locutus est.nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.
