Respondens autem Job,Then Job, answering,dixit:said:
Audivi frequenter talia:I have often heard such things;consolatores onerosi omnes vos estis.you are all aggravating comforters.
Numquid habebunt finem verba ventosa? Will there be no end to windy words?aut aliquid tibi molestum est,Or is it at all a burden to you,si loquaris?if you speak?
Poteram et ego similia vestri loqui,I, too, can speak like you;atque utinam esset anima vestra pro anima mea:and I also wish that your soul favored my soul.
consolarer et ego vos sermonibus,I would also comfort you with speecheset moverem caput meum super vos;and would wag my head over you.
roborarem vos ore meo,I would strengthen you with my mouth,et moverem labia mea,and would move my lips, quasi parcens vobis.as if being lenient to you.
Sed quid agam? But what can I do?Si locutus fuero,When I am speaking, non quiescet dolor meus,my grief will not be quiet;et si tacuero, and if I am quiet, non recedet a me.it will not withdraw from me.
Nunc autem oppressit me dolor meus,But now my grief has crushed me,et in nihilum redacti sunt omnes artus mei.and all my limbs have been reduced to nothing.
Rugæ meæ testimonium dicunt contra me,My wrinkles bear witness against me,et suscitatur falsiloquus adversus faciem meam, and a liar rises up against my face, contradicens mihi.contradicting me.
Collegit furorem suum in me,He has gathered together his fury towards me,et comminans mihi, and, threatening me,infremuit contra me dentibus suis:he has roared against me with his teeth;hostis meus terribilibus oculis me intuitus est.my enemy has beheld me with terrible eyes.
Aperuerunt super me ora sua,They have opened their mouths against me,et exprobrantes percusserunt maxillam meam:and, reproaching me, they have struck me on the cheek;satiati sunt pœnis meis.they are nourished by my sufferings.
Conclusit me Deus apud iniquum,God has confined me with the immoral,et manibus impiorum me tradidit.and he has delivered me into the hands of the impious.
Ego ille quondam opulentus,I,repente contritus sum:who once was wealthy, tenuit cervicem meam,am now crushed.confregit me,He has grabbed me by my neck;et posuit me sibi quasi in signum.he has broken me and has placed me before him as a sign.
Circumdedit me lanceis suis;He has surrounded me with his lances.convulneravit lumbos meos:He has severely wounded my lower back, non pepercit,he has not been lenient,et effudit in terra viscera mea.and he has poured out my organs upon the earth.
Concidit me vulnere super vulnus:He has cut me with wound after wound.irruit in me quasi gigas. He has rushed upon me like a giant.
Saccum consui super cutem meam,I have sewn sackcloth over my skin,et operui cinere carnem meam.and I have covered my body with ashes.
Facies mea intumuit a fletu,My face is swollen from weeping,et palpebræ meæ caligaverunt.and my eyelids have dimmed my vision.
Hæc passus sum absque iniquitate manus meæ,These things I have endured without iniquity in my hand, cum haberem mundas ad Deum preces.while I held pure prayers before God.
Terra,O earth,ne operias sanguinem meum,do not conceal my blood, neque inveniat in te locum latendi clamor meus:nor let my outcry find a hiding place in you.
ecce enim in cælo testis meus,For behold, my witness is in heaven,et conscius meus in excelsis.and my confidante is on high.
Verbosi amici mei:My friends are full of words;ad Deum stillat oculus meus:my eye rains tears upon God.
atque utinam sic judicaretur vir cum Deo,And I wish that a man might be so judged before God,quomodo judicatur filius hominis cum collega suo.just as the son of man is judged with his assistant!
Ecce enim breves anni transeunt,For behold, a few years pass by,et semitam per quam non revertar ambulo.and I am walking a path by which I will not return.
