Post hæc aperuit Job os suum,After this,et maledixit diei suo,Job opened his mouth and cursed his day,

et locutus est:and this is what he said:

Pereat dies in qua natus sum,May the day perish on which I was born,et nox in qua dictum est:and the night, in which it was said,Conceptus est homo.“A man has been conceived.”

Dies ille vertatur in tenebras:May that day be turned into darkness, non requirat eum Deus desuper, may God not seek it from above,et non illustretur lumine.and may light not illuminate it.

Obscurent eum tenebræ et umbra mortis;Let darkness and the shadow of death obscure it,occupet eum caligo, let a fog overtake it,et involvatur amaritudine.and let it be enveloped in bitterness.

Noctem illam tenebrosus turbo possideat;Let a whirlwind of darkness take hold of that night, non computetur in diebus anni, let it not be counted in the days of the year, nec numeretur in mensibus.nor numbered in the months.

Sit nox illa solitaria,May that night be alonenec laude digna.and unworthy of praise.

Maledicant ei qui maledicunt diei,May they curse it, who curse the day,qui parati sunt suscitare Leviathan.who are prepared to awaken a leviathan.

Obtenebrentur stellæ caligine ejus;Let the stars be concealed with its darkness.expectet lucem,Let it expect light,et non videat, and not see it,nec ortum surgentis auroræ.nor the rising of the dawn in the East.

Quia non conclusit ostia ventris qui portavit me,For it did not close the doors of the womb that bore me,nec abstulit mala ab oculis meis.nor take away evils from my eyes.

Quare non in vulva mortuus sum?Why did I not die in the womb?egressus ex utero non statim perii?Having left the womb, why did I not immediately perish?

Quare exceptus genibus? Why was I received upon the knees?cur lactatus uberibus? Why was I suckled at the breasts?

Nunc enim dormiens silerem,For by now, I should have been sleeping silently,et somno meo requiesceremand taking rest in my sleep

cum regibus et consulibus terræ,with the kings and consuls of the earth, qui ædificant sibi solitudines;who build themselves solitudes,

aut cum principibus qui possident aurum, either with princes,et replent domos suas argento;who possess gold and fill their houses with silver,

aut sicut abortivum absconditum non subsisterem, vel qui concepti non viderunt lucem.or, like a hidden miscarriage, I should not have continued, just like those who, being conceived, have not seen the light.

Ibi impii cessaverunt a tumultu,There the impious cease from rebellion,et ibi requieverunt fessi robore.and there the wearied in strength take rest.

Et quondam vincti pariter sine molestia,And at such times, having been bound together without difficulty, non audierunt vocem exactoris.they have not heard the voice of the bailiff.

Parvus et magnus ibi sunt,The small and great are there,et servus liber a domino suo.and the servant is free from his master.

Quare misero data est lux,Why is light given to the miserable,et vita his qui in amaritudine animæ sunt:and life to those who are in bitterness of soul,

qui expectant mortem, who expect death,et non venit, and it does not arrive, quasi effodientes thesaurum;like those who dig for treasure

gaudentque vehementer cum invenerint sepulchrum?and who rejoice greatly when they have found the grave,

viro cujus abscondita est via et circumdedit eum Deus tenebris?to a man whose way is hidden and whom God has surrounded with darkness?

Antequam comedam,Before I eat,suspiro;I sigh;et tamquam inundantes aquæ,and like overflowing waters,sic rugitus meus:so is my howl,

quia timor quem timebam evenit mihi, for the terror that I feared has happened to me,et quod verebar accidit.and so has the dread befallen me.

Nonne dissimulavi?Have I not remained hidden?nonne silui?Have I not kept silence?nonne quievi?Have I not remained calm?et venit super me indignatio.Yet indignation has overcome me.
