Verbum Domini, quod factum est ad Joël,The word of the Lord that came to Joel, filium Phatuel.the son of Pethuel.
Audite hoc,Listen to this, senes, elders,et auribus percipite, and pay close attention, omnes habitatores terræ:all inhabitants of the land.si factum est istud in diebus vestris,Did this ever happen in your daysaut in diebus patrum vestrorum?or in the days of your fathers?
Super hoc filiis vestris narrate,Talk this over with your sons,et filii vestri filiis suis, and your sons with their sons,et filii eorum generationi alteræ.and their sons with another generation.
Residuum erucæ comedit locusta,The locust has eaten what the caterpillar has left,et residuum locustæ comedit bruchus, and the beetle has eaten what the locust has left,et residuum bruchi comedit rubigo.and the mildew has eaten what the beetle has left.
Expergiscimini,Rouse yourselves, ebrii, you drunkards,et flete et ululate, and weep and wail, omnes qui bibitis vinum in dulcedine, all you who delight in drinking wine;quoniam periit ab ore vestro.for it has been cut off from your mouth.
Gens enim ascendit super terram meam,For a nation has ascended over my land:fortis et innumerabilis:strong and without number.dentes ejus ut dentes leonis,His teeth are like the teeth of a lion,et molares ejus ut catuli leonis.and his molars are like that of a lion’s young.
Posuit vineam meam in desertum,He has put my vineyard into desolation,et ficum meam decorticavit;and he has pulled off the bark of my fig tree.nudans spoliavit eam,He has stripped it bareet projecit:and cast it away;albi facti sunt rami ejus.its branches have become white.
Plange quasi virgo accincta sacco super virum pubertatis suæ.Lament like a betrothed virgin, wrapped in sackcloth at the loss of the husband of her youth.
Periit sacrificium et libatio de domo Domini;Sacrificeluxerunt sacerdotes, and libation have perished from the house of the Lord;ministri Domini.the priests who are ministers of the Lord have mourned.
Depopulata est regio,The region has been depopulated, luxit humus, the soil has mourned.quoniam devastatum est triticum,For the wheat has been devastated, confusum est vinum, the wine has been disfigured, elanguit oleum.the oil has languished.
Confusi sunt agricolæ,The farmers have been confounded, ululaverunt vinitores super frumento et hordeo, the vineyard workers have wailed over the crop and the barley, quia periit messis agri.because the harvest of the field has perished.
Vinea confusa est,The vineyard is in ruin,et ficus elanguit;and the fig tree has languished.malogranatum,The pomegranate tree,et palma, and the palm tree,et malum, and the fruit tree,et omnia ligna agri aruerunt, and all the trees of the field have withered.quia confusum est gaudium a filiis hominum. For joy has been thrown into disorder before the sons of men.
Accingite vos,Priests,et plangite, sacerdotes:gird yourselves and lament.ululate, ministri altaris;Ministers of the altars, ingredimini, wail. Enter, cubate in sacco, ministers of my God,ministri Dei mei,lie in sackcloth.quoniam interiit de domo Dei vestri sacrificium et libatio. For sacrifice and libation have passed away from the house of your God.
Sanctificate jejunium,Sanctify a fast, vocate cœtum, call an assembly, congregate senes, gather the eldersomnes habitatores terræ in domum Dei vestri, and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God.et clamate ad Dominum:And cry out to the Lord:
A,“Ah,a,ah,a,ah,diei!the day!”quia prope est dies Domini,For the day of the Lord is near,et quasi vastitas a potente veniet.and it will arrive, like a devastation, before the powerful.
Numquid non coram oculis vestris alimenta perierunt de domo Dei nostri,Has not your nourishment perished from before your eyes,lætitia et exsultatio?joy and gladness from the house of our God?
Computruerunt jumenta in stercore suo,The mules have rotted in their own manure, demolita sunt horrea, the barns have been demolished, dissipatæ sunt apothecæ,the wine cellars have been destroyed, quoniam confusum est triticum.because the grain has been ruined.
Quid ingemuit animal,Why have the animals groaned, mugierunt greges armenti?the herds of cattle bellowed?quia non est pascua eis;because there is no pasture for them.sedYes,et greges pecorum disperierunt.and even the flocks of sheep have been lost.
Ad te,To you,Domine,O Lord, clamabo,I will cry out, quia ignis comedit speciosa deserti, because fire has devoured the beauty of the wilderness,et flamma succendit omnia ligna regionis.and the flame has burned all the trees of the countryside.
Sed et bestiæ agri,Yes,quasi area sitiens imbrem, and even the beasts of the field have gazed up at you, suspexerunt ad te,like the dry ground thirsting for rain, quoniam exsiccati sunt fontes aquarum, because the fountains of waters have dried up,et ignis devoravit speciosa deserti.and fire has devoured the beauty of the wilderness.
