Canite tuba in Sion,Blow the trumpet in Zion, ululate in monte sancto meo, wail on my holy mountain, conturbentur omnes habitatores terræ:let all the inhabitants of the land be stirred up.quia venit dies Domini,For the day of the Lord is on its way;quia prope est.for it is near:

Dies tenebrarum et caliginis,a day of darkness and gloom, dies nubis et turbinis;a day of clouds and whirlwinds.quasi mane expansum super montes populus multus et fortis:Like the morning reaching over the mountains, they are a numerous and strong people.similis ei non fuit a principio,Nothing like them has existed since the beginning,et post eum non erit usque in annos generationis et generationis.nor will exist after them, even in the years of generation upon generation.

Ante faciem ejus ignis vorans,Before their face is a devouring fire,et post eum exurens flamma.and behind them is a burning flame.Quasi hortus voluptatis terra coram eo,The land before them is like a lush garden,et post eum solitudo deserti, and behind them is a desolate desert, neque est qui effugiat eum.and there is no one who can escape them.

Quasi aspectus equorum, aspectus eorum;Their appearance is like the appearance of horses,et quasi equites, sic current.and they will rush forward like horsemen.

Sicut sonitus quadrigarum super capita montium exilient,Like the sound of a four-horse chariot, they will leap over the tops of the mountains.sicut sonitus flammæ ignis devorantis stipulam,Like the sound of a burning flame devouring stubble, velut populus fortis præparatus ad prælium.they are as a strong people prepared for battle.

A facie ejus cruciabuntur populi; Before their face, the people will be tortured;omnes vultus redigentur in ollam.each one’s appearance will retreat, as if into a jar.

Sicut fortes current; They will rush forward, as if they were strong.quasi viri bellatores ascendent murum:Like valiant warriors, they will ascend the wall.viri in viis suis gradientur,The men will advance, each one on his own way,et non declinabunt a semitis suis.and they will not turn aside from their path.

Unusquisque fratrem suum non coarctabit,And each one will not hem in his brother;singuli in calle suo ambulabunt;every one will walk in his own rough path.sed et per fenestras cadent,Moreover,et non demolientur.they will drop through the breach and not be harmed.

Urbem ingredientur,They will advance into the city;in muro current, they will rush through the wall.domos conscendent,They will scale the houses;per fenestras intrabunt quasi fur.they will go in through the windows, like a thief.

A facie ejus contremuit terra,Before their face, moti sunt cæli,the earth has trembled, solthe heavens have been moved.et luna obtenebrati sunt,The sun and moon have been obscured,et stellæ retraxerunt splendorem suum.and the stars have retracted their splendor.

Et Dominus dedit vocem suam ante faciem exercitus sui,And the Lord has bestowed his voice before the face of his army.quia multa sunt nimis castra ejus,For its military camps are very numerous;quia fortia et facientia verbum ejus:for they are strong and they carry out his word.magnus enim dies Domini, et terribilis valde,For the day of the Lord is great and so very terrible,et quis sustinebit eum?and who can withstand it?

Nunc ergo,Now, therefore, dicit Dominus, the Lord says:convertimini ad me in toto corde vestro,“Be converted to me with your whole heart,in jejunio, et in fletu, et in planctu.in fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Et scindite corda vestra,And rend your hearts,et non vestimenta vestra;and not your garments,et convertimini ad Dominum Deum vestrum, and convert to the Lord your God.quia benignus et misericors est,For he is gracious and merciful, patiens et multæ misericordiæ,patient and full of compassion,et præstabilis super malitia.and steadfast despite ill will.

Quis scit si convertatur, et ignoscat,Who knows if he might convert and forgive,et relinquat post se benedictionem, and bequeath a blessing after him, sacrificium et libamen Domino Deo vestro?a sacrifice and a libation to the Lord your God?

Canite tuba in Sion,Blow the trumpet in Zion,sanctificate jejunium,sanctify a fast,vocate cœtum:call an assembly.

congregate populum,Gather the people, sanctificate ecclesiam, sanctify the church, coadunate senes, unite the elders, congregate parvulos, gather together the little oneset sugentes ubera;and infants at the breast.egrediatur sponsus de cubili suo,Let the bridegroom depart from his bed,et sponsa de thalamo suo.and the bride from her bridal chamber.

Inter vestibulum et altare plorabunt sacerdotes,Between the vestibule and the altar, the priests, the ministers of the Lord, ministri Domini, et dicent:will weep, and they will say:Parce,“Spare,Domine,O Lord, parce populo tuo;spare your people.et ne des hæreditatem tuam in opprobrium,And do not bequeath your inheritance into disgrace,ut dominentur eis nationes.so that the nations would rule over them.Quare dicunt in populis:Why should they say among the peoples,Ubi est Deus eorum?‘Where is their God?’”

Zelatus est Dominus terram suam,The Lord has been zealous for his land,et pepercit populo suo.and he has spared his people.

Et respondit Dominus,And the Lord responded,et dixit populo suo:and he said to his people:Ecce ego mittam vobis frumentum, et vinum,“Behold, I will send you grain and wine and oil,et oleum, et replebimini eis;and you will again be filled with them.et non dabo vos ultra opprobrium in gentibus. And I will no longer give you disgrace among the Gentiles.

Et eum qui ab aquilone est procul faciam a vobis,And he who is from the North, I will drive far from you.et expellam eum in terram inviam et desertam:And I will expel him into an impassable land, and into the desert, faciem ejus contra mare orientale, with his face opposite the Eastern sea,et extremum ejus ad mare novissimum:and his furthest part towards the furthest sea.et ascendet fœtor ejus,And his stench will ascend,et ascendet putredo ejus, and his rottenness will ascend, quia superbe egit.because he has acted arrogantly.

Noli timere,Earth, terra:do not be afraid.exsulta,Exultet lætare, and rejoice.quoniam magnificavit Dominus ut faceret. For the Lord has great esteem for what he has done.

Nolite timere,Animals of the countryside, animalia regionis,do not be afraid.quia germinaverunt speciosa deserti; For the beauty of the wilderness has sprung forth.quia lignum attulit fructum suum,For the tree has borne its fruit.ficus et vinea dederunt virtutem suam. The fig tree and the vine have bestowed their virtue.

Et, filii Sion,And you, exsultate, sons of Zion,et lætamini in Domino Deo vestro, exult and rejoice in the Lord your God.quia dedit vobis doctorem justitiæ,For he has given you a teacher of justice,et descendere faciet ad vos imbrem matutinum et serotinum, sicut in principio.and he will make the early and the late rains descend to you, just as it was in the beginning.

Et implebuntur areæ frumento,And the threshing floors will be filled with grain,et redundabunt torcularia vino et oleo.and the presses will overflow with wine and oil.

Et reddam vobis annos, quos comedit locusta,And I will repay you for the years which the locust, bruchus, and the beetle,et rubigo, and the mildew,et eruca: fortitudo mea magna quam misi in vos.and the caterpillar consumed: my great strength which I sent upon you.

Et comedetis vescentes,And you will eat with enjoyment,et saturabimini;and you will be satisfied,et laudabitis nomen Domini Dei vestri, and you will praise the name of the Lord your God,qui fecit mirabilia vobiscum;who has worked miracles with you,et non confundetur populus meus in sempiternum.and my people will not be confounded forever.

Et scietis quia in medio Israël ego sum,And you will know that I am in the midst of Israel,et ego Dominus Deus vester, and I am the Lord your God,et non est amplius;and there is no other,et non confundetur populus meus in æternum.and my people will not be confounded forever.

Et erit post hæc:And after this, effundam spiritum meum super omnem carnem,it will happen that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh,et prophetabunt filii vestri et filiæ vestræ:and your sons and your daughters will prophesy;senes vestri somnia somniabunt, your elders will dream dreams,et juvenes vestri visiones videbunt.and your youths will see visions.

Sed et super servos meos et ancillas in diebus illis effundam spiritum meum. Moreover, in those days I will pour out my spirit upon my servants and handmaids.

Et dabo prodigia in cælo et in terra,And I will grant wonders in the sky and on earth:sanguinem, et ignem, et vaporem fumi.blood and fire and the vapor of smoke.

Sol convertetur in tenebras,The sun will be turned into darkness,et luna in sanguinem, and the moon into blood, antequam veniat dies Domini magnus et horribilis.before the great and terrible day of the Lord shall arrive.

Et erit:And it will happen that everyone who will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.omnis qui invocaverit nomen Domini,For on Mount Zion, salvus erit:and in Jerusalem, quia in monte Sion et in Jerusalem erit salvatio, and in the remnant whom the Lord will call, sicut dixit Dominus, there will be salvation,et in residuis quos Dominus vocaverit.just as the Lord has said.
