Hoc est quod possederunt filii Israël in terra Chanaan,This is what the sons of Israel possessed in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar, quam dederunt eis Eleazar sacerdos, the priest, and Joshua, the son of Nun,et Josue filius Nun,and the leaders of the families,et principes familiarum per tribus Israël:by the tribes of Israel, gave to them,
sorte omnia dividentes, dividing all by lot, sicut præceperat Dominus in manu Moysi, just as the Lord had instructed by the hand of Moses, novem tribubus,to the nine tribeset dimidiæ tribui.and to the one half tribe.
Duabus enim tribubus,For to the twoet dimidiæ,and one half tribes, dederat Moyses trans Jordanem possessionem:Moses had given a possession beyond the Jordan, absque Levitis, aside from the Levites, qui nihil terræ acceperunt inter fratres suos:who received no land among their brothers.
sed in eorum successerunt locum filii Joseph in duas divisi tribus,For by succession, the sons of Joseph, in their place,Manasse et Ephraim:were divided into two tribes, nec acceperunt Levitæ aliam in terra partem,Manasseh and Ephraim. But the Levites did not receive another portion of land, nisi urbes ad habitandum, except cities in which to live,et suburbana earum ad alenda jumenta et pecora sua.and their suburbs, so as to feed their beasts of burden and cattle.
Sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi,Just as the Lord had commanded Moses, ita fecerunt filii Israël,so the sons of Israel did,et diviserunt terram.and they divided the land.
Accesserunt itaque filii Juda ad Josue in Galgala, locutusque est ad eum Caleb filius Jephone Cenezæus: Nosti quid locutus sit Dominus ad Moysen hominem Dei de me et te in Cadesbarne. And so, the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb, the son of Jephone, the Kenizzite, spoke to him: “You know what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh-barnea, about me and you.
Quadraginta annorum eram quando misit me Moyses famulus Domini de Cadesbarne,I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea,ut considerarem terram,so that I might consider the land.nuntiavique ei quod mihi verum videbatur. And I reported to him what seemed to me to be true.
Fratres autem mei,But my brothers, qui ascenderant mecum, who had ascended with me,dissolverunt cor populi:broke the heart of the people.et nihilominus ego secutus sum Dominum Deum meum. And I nevertheless followed the Lord my God.
Juravitque Moyses in die illo,And Moses swore, dicens:on that day,Terra, saying:quam calcavit pes tuus,‘The land that your foot has tread upon shall be your possession, erit possessio tua,and that of your sons,et filiorum tuorum in æternum:unto eternity.quia secutus es Dominum Deum meum. For you have followed the Lord my God.’
Concessit ergo Dominus vitam mihi,Therefore, sicut pollicitus est,the Lord has granted life to me,usque in præsentem diem.just as he promised,Quadragintaeven to the present day.et quinque anni sunt,It has been forty-five years since the Lord spoke this word to Moses,ex quo locutus est Dominus verbum istud ad Moysen, when Israel was wandering through the wilderness.quando ambulabat Israël per solitudinem:Today, hodie octoginta quinque annorum sum,I am eighty-five years old,
sic valens ut eo valebam tempore quando ad explorandum missus sum:being just as strong as I was at that time, when I was sent to explore the land.illius in me temporis fortitudo usque hodie perseverat,The fortitude in me at that time continues even until today, tam ad bellandum quam ad gradiendum.as much to fight as to march.
Da ergo mihi montem istum,Therefore, quem pollicitus est Dominus, grant to me this mountain,te quoque audiente, which the Lord has promised in your hearing also,in quo Enacim sunt,on which are the Anakim,et urbes magnæand cities, atque munitæ:great and fortified.si forte sit Dominus mecum,Perhaps it may be that the Lord will be with me,et potuero delere eos,and I will be able to destroy them, sicut promisit mihi.just as he promised to me.”
Benedixitque ei Josue,And Joshua blessed him,et tradidit ei Hebron in possessionem:and he delivered Hebron to him as a possession.
atque ex eo fuit Hebron Caleb filio Jephone Cenezæo usque in præsentem diem, quia secutus est Dominum Deum Israël.And from then on, Hebron was for Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, even to the present day. For he followed the Lord, the God of Israel.
Nomen Hebron ante vocabatur Cariath Arbe:Previously, the name Hebron was called Kiriath-Arba.Adam maximus ibi inter Enacim situs est:Adam, the greatest among the Anakim, was laid there.et terra cessavit a præliis. And the land ceased from battles.
