Cecidit autem sors tribui Manasse (ipse enim est primogenitus Joseph):Now this lot fell to the tribe of Manasseh, since he is the firstborn of Joseph: to Machir,Machir primogenito Manasse patri Galaad,the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead,qui fuit vir pugnator,who was a fighting man,habuitque possessionem Galaad et Basan:and he had as a possession Gilead and Bashan;
et reliquis filiorum Manasse juxta familias suas,and to the rest of the sons of Manasseh, according to their families:filiis Abiezer,to the sons of Abiezer,et filiis Helec,and to the sons of Helek,et filiis Esriel,and to the sons of Asriel,et filiis Sechem,and to the sons of Shechem,et filiis Hepher,and to the sons of Hepher,et filiis Semida.and to the sons of Shemida.Isti sunt filii Manasse filii Joseph, mares,These are the sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph,per cognationes suas.the males, by their families.
Salphaad vero filio Hepher filii Galaad filii Machir filii Manasse non erant filii, sed solæ filiæ: quarum ista sunt nomina: Maala et Noa et Hegla et Melcha et Thersa.Yet truly, Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters, whose names are these: Mahlah and Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah.
Veneruntque in conspectu Eleazari sacerdotis,And they went before the sight of Eleazar, the priest,et Josue filii Nun,and Joshua, the son of Nun,et principum,and the leaders,dicentes: Dominus præcepit per manum Moysi,saying: “The Lord instructed by the hand of Moses that a possession ought to be given to us,ut daretur nobis possessio in medio fratrum nostrorum.in the midst of our brothers.” And so, he gave to them,Deditque eis juxta imperium Domini possessionem in medio fratrum patris earum.in accord with the order of the Lord, a possession in the midst of the brothers of their father.
Et ceciderunt funiculi Manasse,And by lot,decem,there fell ten portions to Manasseh,absque terra Galaad et Basan trans Jordanem.aside from the land of Gilead and Bashan beyond the Jordan.
Filiæ enim Manasse possederunt hæreditatem in medio filiorum ejus.And so the daughters of Manasseh possessed an inheritance in the midst of his sons.Terra autem Galaad cecidit in sortem filiorum Manasse qui reliqui erant.But the land of Gilead fell by lot to the sons of Manasseh that were left.
Fuitque terminus Manasse ab Aser, Machmethath quæ respicit Sichem:And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethath, which looks out toward Shechem.et egreditur ad dexteram juxta habitatores fontis Taphuæ.And it goes out, to the right, beside the inhabitants of the Fountain of Tappuah.
Etenim in sorte Manasse ceciderat terra Taphuæ,For by lot, there also fell to Manasseh the land of Tappuah,quæ est juxta terminos Manasse filiorum Ephraim.which is beside the borders of Manasseh, and which belongs to the sons of Ephraim.
Descenditque terminus vallis arundineti in meridiem torrentis civitatum Ephraim,And the border descends to the Valley of Reeds, to the south of the torrent of the cities of Ephraim,quæ in medio sunt urbium Manasse:which are in the midst of the cities of Manasseh.terminus Manasse ab aquilone torrentis,The border of Manasseh is to the north of the torrent,et exitus ejus pergit ad mare:and its exit extends to the sea.
ita ut possessio Ephraim sit ab austro,So it is that the possession of Ephraim is in the south,et ab aquilone Manasse,and that of Manasseh is in the north,et utramque claudat mare,and both are enclosed by the sea,et conjungantur sibi in tribu Aser ab aquilone,and they are joined together by the tribe of Asher to the north,et in tribu Issachar ab oriente.and by the tribe of Issachar to the east.
Fuitque hæreditas Manasse in IssacharAnd the inheritance of Manasseh,et in Aser,in Issachar and in Asher,Bethsanwas Bethshean and its villages,et viculi ejus,and Ibleam with its villages,et Jeblaam cum viculis suis,and the inhabitants of Dor,et habitatores Dor cum oppidis suis,with their towns,habitatores quoque Endor cum viculis suis:likewise the inhabitants of Endor with their villages,similiterque habitatores Thenac cum viculis suis,and similarly the inhabitants of Taanach with their villages,et habitatores Mageddo cum viculis suis,and the inhabitants of Megiddo with their villages,et tertia pars urbis Nopheth.and one third part of the city of Naphath.
Nec potuerunt filii Manasse has civitates subvertere,The sons of Manasseh were not able to overthrow these cities,sed cœpit Chananæus habitare in terra sua.and so the Canaanite began to dwell in their land.
Postquam autem convaluerunt filii Israël,But after the sons of Israel had grown strong,subjecerunt Chananæos,they subdued the Canaanites,et fecerunt sibi tributarios,and made them their tributaries,nec interfecerunt eos.but they did not kill them.
Locutique sunt filii Joseph ad Josue,And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua,et dixerunt:and they said,Quare dedisti mihi possessionem sortis et funiculi unius,“Why have you given to me as a possession one lot and one portion,cum sim tantæ multitudinis,while I am of such a great multitude,et benedixerit mihi Dominus?and the Lord has blessed me?”
Ad quos Josue ait:And Joshua said to them,Si populus multus es,“If you are a numerous people,ascende in silvam,go up into the forest,et succide tibi spatia in terra Pherezæi et Raphaim:and cut out space for yourself in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim,quia angusta est tibi possessio montis Ephraim.since the possession of mount Ephraim is too narrow for you.”
Cui responderunt filii Joseph:And the sons of Joseph responded to him:Non poterimus ad montana conscendere,“We are not able to ascend to the mountains,cum ferreis curribus utantur Chananæi,since the Canaanites, who live in the plains,qui habitant in terra campestri,in which are situated Bethshean, with its villages,in qua sitæ sunt Bethsan cum viculis suis,and Jezreel, possessing the middle of the valley,et Jezraël mediam possidens vallem.use chariots of iron.”
Dixitque Josue ad domum Joseph,And Joshua said to the house of Joseph,Ephraim et Manasse:to Ephraim and Manasseh:Populus multus es,“You are a numerous people,et magnæ fortitudinis:and you have great strength.non habebis sortem unam,You shall not have only one lot.
sed transibis ad montem,Instead, you shall cross to the mountain,et succides tibi, atque purgabis ad habitandum spatia:and you shall cut down and clear out for yourselves space in which to live.et poteris ultra procedere cum subverteris Chananæum,And you shall be able to advance further, when you will have destroyed the Canaanite, who,quem dicis ferreos habere currus, et esse fortissimum.as you say, has iron chariots and is very strong.”
