Misit igitur Josue filius Nun de Setim duos viros exploratores in abscondito:And so Joshua,et dixit eis:the son of Nun,Ite,sent two men from Shittim to explore in secret.et considerate terram,And he said to them, urbemque Jericho.“Go and consider the land and the city of Jericho.”Qui pergentes ingressi sunt domum mulieris meretricis,And while traveling, nomine Rahab, they entered into the house of a harlot woman named Rahab,et quieverunt apud eam.and they rested with her.
Nuntiatumque est regi Jericho,And it was reported to the king of Jericho,et dictum:and it was said:Ecce viri ingressi sunt huc per noctem de filiis Israël,“Behold, men have entered to this place in the night, from the sons of Israel,ut explorarent terram.so that they might explore the land.”
Misitque rex Jericho ad Rahab,And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, dicens:saying:Educ viros, qui venerunt ad te,“Bring out the men who came to you,et ingressi sunt domum tuam:and who entered into your house.exploratores quippe sunt,For certainly they are spies,et omnem terram considerare venerunt.and they have arrived to consider the entire land.”
Tollensque mulier viros,And the woman, abscondit, taking the men,et ait:hid them.Fateor,And she said:venerunt ad me,“I admit that they came to me,sed nesciebam unde essent:but I did not know where they were from.
cumque porta clauderetur in tenebris,And when the gate was closed,et illi pariter exierunt;they went out together in the darkness.nescio quo abierunt:I do not know where they have gone.persequimini cito,Pursue them quickly,et comprehendetis eos.and you will overtake them.”
Ipsa autem fecit ascendere viros in solarium domus suæ,But she caused the men to ascend to the roof of her house, operuitque eos stipula lini, quæ ibi erat.and she covered them with the stalks of flax that were there.
Hi autem, qui missi fuerant, secuti sunt eos per viam, quæ ducit ad vadum Jordanis: illisque egressis statim porta clausa est.But those who had been sent pursued after them along the way that leads to the ford of the Jordan. And as soon as they went out, the gate was closed.
Necdum obdormierant qui latebant,Those who were hiding had not yet fallen asleep,et ecce mulier ascendit ad eos,and behold, the woman went up to them,et ait:and she said:
Novi quod Dominus tradiderit vobis terram:“I know that the Lord has given this land to you.etenim irruit in nos terror vester,For the terror of you has fallen upon us,et elanguerunt omnes habitatores terræ.and all the inhabitants of the land have languished.
Audivimus quod siccaverit Dominus aquas maris Rubri ad vestrum introitum,We have heard that the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea upon your arrival, quando egressi estis ex Ægypto:when you were departing from Egypt,et quæ feceritis duobus Amorrhæorum regibus, and we heard of the things that you did to the two kings of the Amorites, qui erant trans Jordanem, who were beyond the Jordan,Sehon et Og,Sihon and Og,quos interfecistis.whom you put to death.
Et hæc audientes pertimuimus,And upon hearing these things,et elanguit cor nostrum,we were very afraid, nec remansit in nobis spiritus ad introitum vestrum:and our heart languished.Dominus enim Deus vester ipse est Deus in cælo sursumNeither did there remain in us any spirit at your arrival.et in terra deorsum. For the Lord your God is the very God in heaven above and on earth below.
Nunc ergo jurate mihi per Dominum,Now,ut quomodo ego misericordiam feci vobiscum, therefore, itaswear to me by the Lord that in the same way that I have acted with mercy toward you,et vos faciatis cum domo patris mei:so also shall you act toward the house of my father.detisque mihi verum signum,And may you give me a true sign
ut salvetis patrem meum et matrem, that you will save my father and mother,et fratres ac sorores meas,my brothers and sisters,et omnia quæ illorum sunt, and all that is theirs,et eruatis animas nostras a morte.and that you may rescue our souls from death.”
Qui responderunt ei:They responded to her:Anima nostra sit pro vobis in mortem,“May our lives be yours unto death,si tamen non prodideris nos:if only you do not betray us.cumque tradiderit nobis Dominus terram,And when the Lord will have delivered the land to us,faciemus in te misericordiam et veritatem.we will act toward you with mercy and truth.”
Demisit ergo eos per funem de fenestra:Therefore, she sent them down from a window with a rope.domus enim ejus hærebat muro. For her house was joined to the wall.
Dixitque ad eos:And she said to them:Ad montana conscendite,“Climb up to the mountains;ne forte occurrant vobis revertentes:otherwise, they may meet you as they are returning.ibique latitate tribus diebus,And lay hidden there for three days, donec redeant, until they return.et sic ibitis per viam vestram. And then you will go on your way.”
Qui dixerunt ad eam:And they said to her:Innoxii erimus a juramento hoc,“We shall be innocent of this oath, quo adjurasti nos:to which you have sworn us,
si ingredientibus nobis terram,if, when we enter into the land, signum fuerit funiculus iste coccineus, this scarlet cord has been placed as a sign,et ligaveris eum in fenestra, per quam demisisti nos:and you have tied it at the window by which you let us down.et patrem tuum ac matrem,And so, gather your father, fratresque et omnem cognationem tuam congregaveris in domum tuam.and mother, and brothers, and all your family into your house.
Qui ostium domus tuæ egressus fuerit,Whoever will have exited from the door of your house, sanguis ipsius erit in caput ejus, his blood will be on his own head,et nos erimus alieni.and we will be uninvolved.Cunctorum autem sanguis, qui tecum in domo fuerint, redundabit in caput nostrum,But the blood of all who will be with you in the house shall fall back upon our own head,si eos aliquis tetigerit.if anyone touches them.
Quod si nos prodere volueris,But if you will have betrayed us,et sermonem istum proferre in medium,so that you spread this word in their midst, erimus mundi ab hoc juramento,we will be free from this oath, quo adjurasti nos.to which you have sworn us.”
Et illa respondit:And she responded,Sicut locuti estis,“Just as you have spoken, ita fiat:so let it be done.”dimittensque eos ut pergerent,And sending them to travel on,appendit funiculum coccineum in fenestra.she hung the scarlet cord at the window.
Illi vero ambulantes pervenerunt ad montana,And truly, walking on, they arrived at the mountains,et manserunt ibi tres dies, and they stayed there for three days, donec reverterentur qui fuerant persecuti:until those who had been pursuing them returned.quærentes enim per omnem viam,For having sought them along the entire way,non repererunt eos.they did not find them.
Quibus urbem ingressis,And when they returnedreversi sunt, and entered the city,et descenderunt exploratores de monte:the explorers descended from the mountain.et,And crossing the Jordan, transmisso Jordane, they went to Joshua, venerunt ad Josue filium Nun,the son of Nun,narraveruntque ei omnia quæ acciderant sibi, and they reported to him all that had happened to them.
atque dixerunt:And they said,Tradidit Dominus omnem terram hanc in manus nostras,“The Lord has delivered this entire land into our hands,et timore prostrati sunt cuncti habitatores ejus.and all its inhabitants have been struck down by fear.”
