Congregavitque Josue omnes tribus Israël in Sichem,And Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,et vocavit majores natu, and he called those greater by birth,ac principes, and the leaderset judices, and judgeset magistros:and teachers.steteruntque in conspectu Domini,And they stood in the sight of the Lord.
et ad populum sic locutus est:And he spoke to the people in this way:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Trans fluvium habitaverunt patres vestri ab initio,‘Your fathers lived, in the beginning, across the river:Thare pater Abraham et Nachor:Terah, the father of Abraham, and Nahor.servieruntque diis alienis. And they served strange gods.
Tuli ergo patrem vestrum Abraham de Mesopotamiæ finibus,Then I brought your father Abraham from the parts of Mesopotamia,et adduxi eum in terram Chanaan, and I led him into the land of Canaan.multiplicavique semen ejus,And I multiplied his offspring,
et dedi ei Isaac:and I gave to him Isaac.illique rursum dedi Jacob et Esau. And to him, I gave again Jacob and Esau.E quibus, Esau dedi montem Seir ad possidendum:And I gave mount Seir to Esau as a possession.Jacob vero et filii ejus descenderunt in Ægyptum.Yet truly, Jacob and his sons descended into Egypt.
Misique Moysen et Aaron,And I sent Moses and Aaron,et percussi Ægyptum multis signis atque portentis.and I struck Egypt with many signs and portents.
Eduxique vos et patres vestros de Ægypto,And I led you and your fathers away from Egypt,et venistis ad mare:and you arrived at the sea.persecutique sunt Ægyptii patres vestros cum curribus et equitatu,And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen, usque ad mare Rubrum.as far as the Red Sea.
Clamaverunt autem ad Dominum filii Israël:Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.qui posuit tenebras inter vos et Ægyptios,And he stationed a darkness between you and the Egyptians,et adduxit super eos mare, and he led the sea over them,et operuit eos.and he covered them.Viderunt oculi vestri cuncta quæ in Ægypto fecerim,Your eyes saw all that I did in Egypt,et habitastis in solitudine multo tempore:and you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
et introduxi vos in terram Amorrhæi,And I led you into the land of the Amorite, qui habitabat trans Jordanem.who was living beyond the Jordan.Cumque pugnarent contra vos,And when they fought against you, tradidi eos in manus vestras,I delivered them into your hands,et possedistis terram eorum, and you possessed their land, atque interfecistis eos.and you put them to death.
Surrexit autem Balac filius Sephor rex Moab,Then Balak, the son of Zippor, the king of Moab,et pugnavit contra Israëlem.rose up and fought against Israel.Misitque et vocavit Balaam filium Beor,And he sent and called for Balaam, the son of Beor,ut malediceret vobis:so that he might curse you.
et ego nolui audire eum,And I was not willing to listen to him,sed e contrario per illum benedixi vobis, but on the contrary, I blessed you through him,et liberavi vos de manu ejus.and I freed you from his hand.
Transistisque Jordanem,And you crossed over the Jordan,et venistis ad Jericho.and you arrived at Jericho.Pugnaveruntque contra vos viri civitatis ejus,And the men of that city fought against you:Amorrhæusthe Amorite,et Pherezæus,and the Perizzite,et Chananæus,and the Canaanite,et Hethæus,and the Hittite,et Gergezæus,and the Girgashite,et Hevæus,and the Hivite,et Jebusæus:and the Jebusite.et tradidi illos in manus vestras. And I delivered them into your hands.
Misique ante vos crabrones:And I sent wasps before you.et ejeci eos de locis suis,And I drove them from their places, duos reges Amorrhæorum, the two kings of the Amorites, non in gladio nec in arcu tuo.but not by your sword, and not by your bow.
Dedique vobis terram,And I gave you a land,in qua non laborastis,in which you did not labor,et urbes quas non ædificastis, and cities,ut habitaretis in eis:which you did not build, vineas,so that you might live in them,et oliveta, and vineyards and olive groves,quæ non plantastis.which you did not plant.’
Nunc ergo timete Dominum,Now therefore, fear the Lord,et servite ei perfecto corde atque verissimo:and serve him with a perfect and very sincere heart.et auferte deos quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia et in Ægypto,And take away the gods that your fathers served in Mesopotamia and in Egypt,ac servite Domino.and serve the Lord.
Sin autem malum vobis videtur ut Domino serviatis,But if it seems evil to you that you would serve the Lord, optio vobis datur:a choice is given to you.eligite hodie quod placet,Choose today what pleases you,cui servire potissimum debeatis:and whom you ought to serve above all else, utrum diis, either the gods that your fathers served in Mesopotamia, quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia,or the gods of the Amorites,an diis Amorrhæorum,in whose land you live:in quorum terra habitatis:but as for me and my house, ego autem et domus mea serviemus Domino.we will serve the Lord.”
Responditque populus,And the people responded,et ait:and they said:Absit a nobis ut relinquamus Dominum,“Far be it from us that we would forsake the Lord,et serviamus diis alienis.and serve foreign gods.
Dominus Deus noster,The Lord our God himself led usipse eduxit nos et patres nostros de terra Ægypti, and our fathers away from the land of Egypt,de domo servitutis:from the house of servitude.fecitque videntibus nobis signa ingentia,And he accomplished immense signs in our sight,et custodivit nos in omni via per quam ambulavimus, and he preserved us along the entire way by which we journeyed,et in cunctis populis per quos transivimus.and among all the people through whom we passed.
Et ejecit universas gentes,And he cast out all the nations,Amorrhæum habitatorem terræ quam nos intravimus.the Amorite, the inhabitant of the land that we entered.Serviemus igitur Domino,And so, we will serve the Lord, quia ipse est Deus noster.for he is our God.”
Dixitque Josue ad populum:And Joshua said to the people:Non poteritis servire Domino:“You will not be able to serve the Lord.Deus enim sanctus et fortis æmulator est,For he is a holy and powerful God, and he is jealous, nec ignoscet sceleribus vestris atque peccatis.and he will not ignore your wickedness and sins.
Si dimiseritis Dominum,If you leave behind the Lord,et servieritis diis alienis, and you serve foreign gods, convertet se,he will turn himself,et affliget vosand he will afflict you, atque subvertet, and he will overthrow you, postquam vobis præstiterit bona.after all the good that he has offered to you.”
Dixitque populus ad Josue:And the people said to Joshua,Nequaquam ita ut loqueris erit,“By no means will it be as you are saying, sed Domino serviemus.but we will serve the Lord.”
Et Josue ad populum:And Joshua said to the people,Testes, inquit, vos estis,“You yourselves are witnesses, quia ipsi elegeritis vobis Dominum ut serviatis ei.that you have chosen the Lord so that you may serve him.”Responderuntque: Testes. And they answered, “We are witnesses.”
Nunc ergo, ait,“Now therefore,”auferte deos alienos de medio vestri,he said, “take away strange gods from among yourselves,et inclinate corda vestra ad Dominum Deum Israël.and incline your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
Dixitque populus ad Josue:And the people said to Joshua,Domino Deo nostro serviemus,“We will serve the Lord our God,et obedientes erimus præceptis ejus.and we will be obedient to his precepts.”
Percussit ergo Josue in die illo fœdus,Therefore, on that day, Joshua struck a covenant,et proposuit populo præcepta atque judicia in Sichem.and he set before the people at Shechem the precepts and the judgments.
Scripsit quoque omnia verba hæc in volumine legis Domini:He also wrote all these things in the volume of the law of the Lord.et tulit lapidem pergrandem,And he took a very great stone, posuitque eum subter quercum, quæ erat in sanctuario Domini:and he stationed it under the oak that was in the Sanctuary of the Lord.
et dixit ad omnem populum:And he said to all the people,En lapis iste erit vobis in testimonium,“Lo, this stone shall be to you as a testimony, quod audierit omnia verba Domini, quæ locutus est vobis:which has heard all the words of the Lord that he has spoken to you, lest perhaps,ne forte postea negare velitis, afterward, you might choose to deny it,et mentiri Domino Deo vestro.and to lie to the Lord your God.”
Dimisitque populum,And he dismissed the people, singulos in possessionem suam.each one to their own possession.
Et post hæc mortuus est Josue filius Nun servus Domini, centum et decem annorum:And after these things, Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
sepelieruntque eum in finibus possessionis suæ in Thamnathsare,And they buried him within the borders of his possession at Timnath-Serah,quæ est sita in monte Ephraim, which is situated on mount Ephraim,a septentrionali parte montis Gaas.before the northern side of mount Gaash.
Servivitque Israël Domino cunctis diebus Josue et seniorum,And Israel served the Lord during all the days of Joshua, qui longo vixerunt tempore post Josue, and of the elders who lived for a long time after Joshua,et qui noverunt omnia opera Domini quæ fecerat in Israël.and who had known all the works of the Lord that he had accomplished in Israel.
Ossa quoque Joseph,And the bones of Joseph,quæ tulerant filii Israël de Ægypto, which the sons of Israel had brought from Egypt, sepelierunt in Sichem, they buried at Shechem,in parte agri quem emerat Jacob a filiis Hemor patris Sichem,in a portion of the field that Jacob had purchased from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, centum novellis ovibus, for one hundred young female sheep,et fuit in possessionem filiorum Joseph.and so it was in the possession of the sons of Joseph.
Eleazar quoque filius Aaron mortuus est:Likewise, Eleazar, the son of Aaron,et sepelierunt eum in Gabaath Phinees filii ejus, died. And they buried him at Gibeah, which belongs to Phinehas,quæ data est ei in monte Ephraim.his son, and which was given to him on mount Ephraim.
