Post mortem Josue,After the death of Joshua, consuluerunt filii Israël Dominum, the sons of Israel consulted the Lord, saying, dicentes: Quis ascendet ante nos contra Chananæum,“Who will ascend before us, against the Canaanite,et erit dux belli?and who will be the commander of the war?”

Dixitque Dominus:And the Lord said:Judas ascendet:“Judah shall ascend.ecce tradidi terram in manus ejus.Behold, I have delivered the land into his hands.”

Et ait Judas Simeoni fratri suo:And Judah said to his brother Simeon,Ascende mecum in sortem meam,“Go up with me to my lot,et pugna contra Chananæum,and fight against the Canaanite,ut et ego pergam tecum in sortem tuam.so that I also may go forth with you to your lot.”Et abiit cum eo Simeon. And Simeon went with him.

Ascenditque Judas,And Judah went up,et tradidit Dominus Chananæum ac Pherezæum in manus eorum:and the Lord delivered the Canaanite, as well as the Perizzite, into their hands.et percusserunt in Bezec decem millia virorum. And they struck down ten thousand of the men at Bezek.

Inveneruntque Adonibezec in Bezec,And they found Adonibezek at Bezek,et pugnaverunt contra eum,and they fought against him,ac percusserunt Chananæum et Pherezæum.and they struck down the Canaanite and the Perizzite.

Fugit autem Adonibezec:Then Adonibezek fled.quem persecuti comprehenderunt,And they pursued him and captured him,cæsis summitatibus manuum ejus ac pedum.and they cut off the ends of his hands and feet.

Dixitque Adonibezec:And Adonibezek said:Septuaginta reges amputatis manuum ac pedum summitatibus colligebant sub mensa mea ciborum reliquias:“Seventy kings, with the ends of their hands and feet amputated, have been gathering the remnants of food under my table.sicut feci, ita reddidit mihi Deus.Just as I have done, so has God repaid me.”Adduxeruntque eum in Jerusalem,And they brought him to Jerusalem,et ibi mortuus est.and he died there.

Oppugnantes ergo filii Juda Jerusalem,Then the sons of Judah, besieging Jerusalem, ceperunt eam, et percusserunt in ore gladii, seized it. And they struck it with edge of the sword, tradentes cunctam incendio civitatem.delivering the entire city to be burned.

Et postea descendentes pugnaverunt contra Chananæum,And afterward, descending, qui habitabat in montanis, they fought against the Canaanites who were living in the mountains,et ad meridiem, and in the south,et in campestribus.and in the plains.

Pergensque Judas contra Chananæum,And Judah, qui habitabat in Hebron (cujus nomen fuit antiquitus Cariath Arbe),going forth against the Canaanites who were living at Hebron, percussit Sesai,(the name of which from antiquity was Kiriath-Arba) struck down Sheshai,et Ahiman, and Ahiman,et Tholmai:and Talmai.

atque inde profectus abiit ad habitatores Dabir,And continuing on from there, he went to the inhabitants of Debir, cujus nomen vetus erat Cariath Sepher, the old name of which was Kiriath-Sepher,id est, that is,civitas litterarum.the City of Letters.

Dixitque Caleb:And Caleb said,Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher,“Whoever will strike Kiriath-Sepher,et vastaverit eam,and will lay waste to it,dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem.I will give to him my daughter Achsah as wife.”

Cumque cepisset eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb minor,And when Othniel, the son of Kenaz, a younger brother of Caleb, dedit ei Axam filiam suam conjugem.had seized it, he gave his daughter Achsah to him in marriage.

Quam pergentem in itinere monuit vir suus ut peteret a patre suo agrum. And as she was traveling on a journey, her husband admonished her, so that she would request a field from her father.Quæ cum suspirasset sedens in asino,And since she had sighed while sitting on her donkey, dixit ei Caleb:Caleb said to her,Quid habes?“What is it?”

At illa respondit:But she responded:Da mihi benedictionem,“Give a blessing to me.quia terram arentem dedisti mihi:For you have given me a dry land.da et irriguam aquis. Also give a watered land.”Dedit ergo ei Caleb irriguum superius,Therefore,et irriguum inferius.Caleb gave to her the upper watered land and the lower watered land.

Filii autem Cinæi cognati Moysi ascenderunt de civitate palmarum cum filiis Juda,Now the sons of the Kenite, the relative of Moses, ascended from the City of Palms,in desertum sortis ejus, with the sons of Judah, into the wilderness of his lot, quod est ad meridiem Arad, which is toward the south of Arad.et habitaverunt cum eo.And they lived with him.

viderunt hominem egredientem de civitate, they saw a man departing from the city, dixeruntque ad eum:and they said to him,Ostende nobis introitum civitatis,“Reveal to us the entrance to the city,et faciemus tecum misericordiam.and we will act with mercy toward you.”

Qui cum ostendisset eis,And when he had revealed it to them, percusserunt urbem in ore gladii:they struck the city with the edge of the sword.hominem autem illum,But that man,et omnem cognationem ejus, and all his relatives, dimiserunt.they released.

Qui dimissus,And having been sent away, abiit in terram Hetthim, et ædificavit ibi civitatem,he went out to the land of the Hittites, and he built a city there, vocavitque eam Luzam:and he called it Luz.quæ ita appellatur usque in præsentem diem. And so it is called, even to the present day.

Postquam autem confortatus est Israël,Then, after Israel had grown strong, he made them tributaries, fecit eos tributarios, et delere noluit.but he was not willing to destroy them.

Ephraim etiam non interfecit Chananæum,And now Ephraim did not put to death the Canaanite, qui habitabat in Gazer, who was living at Gezer;sed habitavit cum eo.instead, he lived with him.

Nephthali quoque non delevit habitatores Bethsames, et Bethanath:Naphtali also did not wipe out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Bethanath.et habitavit inter Chananæum habitatorem terræ,And he lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land.fueruntque ei Bethsamitæ et Bethanitæ tributarii. And the Beth-shemeshites and Bethanathites were tributaries to him.

Arctavitque Amorrhæus filios Dan in monte,And the Amorite hemmed in the sons of Dan on the mountain, nec dedit eis locum ut ad planiora descenderent:and did not give them a place, so that they might descend to the flatlands.

habitavitque in monte Hares,And he lived on the mountain at Har-heres,quod interpretatur testaceo, which is translated as ‘resembling brick,’in Ajalon et Salebim.and at Aijalon and Sha-alabbin.Et aggravata est manus domus Joseph,But the hand of the house of Joseph was very heavy, factusque est ei tributarius.and he became a tributary to him.
