Quibus transgressis,And when they had crossed over, dixit Dominus ad Josue:the Lord said to Joshua:

Elige duodecim viros singulos per singulas tribus:“Choose twelve men, one from each tribe,

et præcipe eis ut tollant de medio Jordanis alveo, and instruct them so that they may take from the midst of the channel of the Jordan, ubi steterunt pedes sacerdotum, where the feet of the priests stood still, duodecim durissimos lapides, twelve very hard stones, quos ponetis in loco castrorum, which you shall station in the place of the camp, ubi fixeritis hac nocte tentoria.where you will pitch your tents this night.”

Vocavitque Josue duodecim viros,And Joshua called twelve men, quos elegerat de filiis Israël,whom he had chosen from the sons of Israel, singulos de singulis tribubus, one from each tribe,

et ait ad eos:and he said to them:Ite ante arcam Domini Dei vestri ad Jordanis medium,“Go before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan,et portate inde singuli singulos lapides in humeris vestris, and let each one carry from there one stone on your shoulders, juxta numerum filiorum Israël,according to the number of the sons of Israel,

ut sit signum inter vos: et quando interrogaverint vos filii vestri cras,so that it may be a sign among you. And when your sons will ask you, dicentes:tomorrow,Quid sibi volunt isti lapides?saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’

respondebitis eis:you shall respond to them:Defecerunt aquæ Jordanis ante arcam fœderis Domini,‘The waters of the Jordan failed before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, cum transiret eum:when the ark crossed over it.idcirco positi sunt lapides isti in monimentum filiorum Israël usque in æternum. For this reason, these stones were placed as a monument for the sons of Israel, even forever.’”

Fecerunt ergo filii Israël sicut præcepit eis Josue,Therefore, the sons of Israel did as Joshua instructed them, portantes de medio Jordanis alveo duodecim lapides, carrying twelve stones from the midst of the channel of the Jordan,ut Dominus ei imperarat, just as the Lord had ordered him, juxta numerum filiorum Israël, usque ad locum in quo castrametati sunt, according to the number of the sons of Israel, as far as the place where they made camp, ibique posuerunt eos.and there they stationed them.

Alios quoque duodecim lapides posuit Josue in medio Jordanis alveo,Similarly, Joshua positioned another twelve stones in the middle of the channel of the Jordan, ubi steterunt sacerdotes qui portabant arcam fœderis:where the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant;et sunt ibi usque in præsentem diem.and they are there, even to the present day.

Sacerdotes autem qui portabant arcam, stabant in Jordanis medio, donec omnia complerentur, quæ Josue, ut loqueretur ad populum, præceperat Dominus, et dixerat ei Moyses. Festinavitque populus, et transiit. Now the priests who were carrying the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was accomplished which the Lord had instructed Joshua to speak to the people and which Moses had said to him. And the people hurried, and they passed over.

Cumque transissent omnes,And when they had all crossed, transivit et arca Domini, the ark of the Lord also crossed, sacerdotesque pergebant ante populum.and the priests advanced before the people.

Filii quoque Ruben,Likewise,et Gad,the sons of Reuben,et dimidia tribus Manasse, and of Gad,armati præcedebant filios Israël,and of the one half tribe of Manasseh advanced with weapons before the sons of Israel, sicut eis præceperat Moyses:just as Moses had instructed them.

et quadraginta pugnatorum millia per turmas,And forty thousand fighters,et cuneos,by companies and divisions, incedebant per plana atque campestria urbis Jericho.advanced through the plains and fields of the city of Jericho.

In die illo magnificavit Dominus Josue coram omni Israël,In that day,ut timerent eum,the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel, sicut timuerant Moysen,so that they would fear him,dum adviveret.just as they had feared Moses while he lived.

Dixitque ad eum:And he said to him,

Præcipe sacerdotibus, qui portant arcam fœderis, ut ascendant de Jordane.“Command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant to ascend from the Jordan.”

Qui præcepit eis,And he commanded them, dicens:saying,Ascendite de Jordane.“Ascend from the Jordan.”

Cumque ascendissent portantes arcam fœderis Domini,And when those who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord had ascended,et siccam humum calcare cœpissent, and they began to step on dry soil, reversæ sunt aquæ in alveum suum, the waters returned to their channel,et fluebant sicut ante consueverant.and they flowed as they usually did before.

Populus autem ascendit de Jordane decimo die mensis primi,Now the people ascended from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month,et castrametati sunt in Galgalis contra orientalem plagam urbis Jericho.and they encamped at Gilgal, opposite the eastern portion of the city of Jericho.

Duodecim quoque lapides,Likewise, quos de Jordanis alveo sumpserant, the twelve stones that they had taken up from the channel of the Jordan, posuit Josue in Galgalis,Joshua stationed at Gilgal.

et dixit ad filios Israël:And he said to the sons of Israel:Quando interrogaverint filii vestri cras patres suos,“When your sons will question their fathers, tomorrow,et dixerint eis:and they will say to them,Quid sibi volunt lapides isti?‘What do these stones mean to you?’

docebitis eos,you shall teach them, atque dicetis:and you shall say:Per arentem alveum transivit Israël Jordanem istum,‘Israel passed over this Jordan, through the dry channel.’

siccante Domino Deo vestro aquas ejus in conspectu vestro,For the Lord your God dried up its waters in your sight, donec transiretis, until you crossed over,

sicut fecerat prius in mari Rubro, just as he had done before, at the Red Sea,quod siccavit donec transiremus:which he dried up until we crossed over.

ut discant omnes terrarum populi fortissimam Domini manum,So may all the peoples of the earth learn of the very powerful hand of the Lord.ut et vos timeatis Dominum Deum vestrum omni tempore. So may you also fear the Lord your God for all time.”
