Postquam ergo audierunt omnes reges Amorrhæorum,Therefore, after all the kings of the Amorites,qui habitabant trans Jordanem ad occidentalem plagam,who were living across the Jordan toward the western region,et cuncti reges Chanaan,and all the kings of Canaan,qui propinqua possidebant magni maris loca,who possessed the places beside the great sea,quod siccasset Dominus fluenta Jordanis coram filiis Israël donec transirent,had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel, until they crossed over it,dissolutum est cor eorum,their heart was broken,et non remansit in eis spiritus,and there remained in them no spirit,timentium introitum filiorum Israël.out of fear at the entrance of the sons of Israel.

Eo tempore ait Dominus ad Josue:So at that time, the Lord said to Joshua:Fac tibi cultros lapideos,“Make for yourself knives of stone,et circumcide secundo filios Israël.and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.”

Fecit quod jusserat Dominus,He did what the Lord had commanded,et circumcidit filios Israël in colle præputiorum.and he circumcised the sons of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

Hæc autem causa est secundæ circumcisionis:Now this is the reason for the second circumcision:omnis populus, qui egressus est de Ægypto generis masculini,All the people who departed from Egypt of the male gender,universi bellatores viri,all the men fit for war,mortui sunt in deserto per longissimos viæ circuitus,died in the desert during the very long wandering way;

qui omnes circumcisi erant.all these had been circumcised.Populus autem qui natus est in deserto,But the people who were born in the desert,

per quadraginta annos itineris latissimæ solitudinis incircumcisus fuit:throughout the forty years of the journey in the very broad wilderness, were uncircumcised,donec consumerentur qui non audierant vocem Domini,until the ones who had not listened to the voice of the Lord were consumed.et quibus ante juraverat ut non ostenderet eis terram lacte et melle manantem.For he had sworn to them before, that he would not reveal to them the land flowing with milk and honey.

Horum filii in locum successerunt patrum,The sons of these ones succeeded to the place of their fathers,et circumcisi sunt a Josue:and they were circumcised by Joshua.quia sicut nati fuerant,For they were uncircumcised,in præputio erant,just as they had been born,nec eos in via aliquis circumciderat.and no one had circumcised them along the way.

Postquam autem omnes circumcisi sunt,Then,manserunt in eodem castrorum loco,after they were all circumcised,donec sanarentur.they remained in the same place of the camp until they were healed.

Dixitque Dominus ad Josue:And the Lord said to Joshua,Hodie abstuli opprobrium Ægypti a vobis.“Today I have taken away from you the disgrace of Egypt.”Vocatumque est nomen loci illius Galgala,And the name of that place was called Gilgal,usque in præsentem diem.even to the present day.

Manseruntque filii Israël in Galgalis,And the sons of Israel stayed at Gilgal,et fecerunt Phase quartadecima die mensis ad vesperum in campestribus Jericho:and they kept the Passover, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, in the plains of Jericho.

et comederunt de frugibus terræ die altero, azymos panes,And on the following day, they ate unleavened bread from the grain of the land,et polentam ejusdem anni.and cooked grain, of the same year.

Defecitque manna postquam comederunt de frugibus terræ,And the manna ceased after they ate from the grain of the land.nec usi sunt ultra cibo illo filii Israël,And the sons of Israel no longer made use of that food.sed comederunt de frugibus præsentis anni terræ Chanaan.Instead, they ate from the grain of the present year, from the land of Canaan.

Cum autem esset Josue in agro urbis Jericho,And when Joshua was in the field of the city of Jericho,levavit oculos,he lifted up his eyes,et vidit virum stantem contra se,and he saw a man standing opposite him,evaginatum tenentem gladium:holding a drawn sword.perrexitque ad eum,And he went to himet ait:and said,Noster es,“Are you one of ours,an adversariorum?or one of our adversaries?”

Qui respondit:And he responded:Nequaquam:“Not at all.sed sum princeps exercitus Domini,Instead, I am a prince of the host of the Lord,et nunc venio.and now I have arrived.”

Cecidit Josue pronus in terram,Joshua fell prone on the ground.et adorans ait:And reverencing,Quid dominus meus loquitur ad servum suum?he said, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

Solve,He said:inquit, calceamentum tuum de pedibus tuis:“Remove your shoes from your feet.locus enim, in quo stas, sanctus est.For the place on which you stand is holy.”Fecitque Josue ut sibi fuerat imperatum.And Joshua did just as he had been commanded.
