Dixit autem Dominus ad Josue:Then the Lord said to Joshua:Ne timeas,“You should not fear, neque formides:and you should not dread.tolle tecum omnem multitudinem pugnatorum,Take with you the entire multitude of fighters,et consurgens ascende in oppidum Hai.and rising up,Ecce tradidi in manu tua regem ejusascend to the town of Ai.et populum,Behold, urbemqueI have delivered into your hand its king and people,et terram.and the city and the land.
Faciesque urbi Hai,And you shall do to the city of Ai,et regi ejus, and to its king, sicut fecisti Jericho, just as you did to Jericho,et regi illius:and to its king.prædam vero,Yet truly, the spoils,et omnia animantia diripietis vobis:and all the living things, you shall plunder for yourselves.pone insidias urbi post eam.Set an ambush against the city behind it.”
Surrexitque Josue,And Joshua rose up,et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo,and the entire army of warriors with him,ut ascenderent in Hai:so that they might ascend against Ai.et electa triginta millia virorum fortium misit nocte,And he sent thirty thousand elect strong men in the night.
præcepitque eis,And he instructed them, dicens:saying:Ponite insidias post civitatem,“Set an ambush behind the city.nec longius recedatis:You shall withdraw not far away,et eritis omnes parati.and let everyone be prepared.
Ego autem, et reliqua multitudo, quæ mecum est,But I and the remainder of the multitude that is with me will approach from the opposite side of the city.accedemus ex adverso contra urbem. Cumque exierint contra nos,And when they come out against us,sicut ante fecimus, fugiemus,we will flee and turn our backs,et terga vertemus, just as we did before,
donec persequentes ab urbe longius protrahantur:until, pursuing us, they are drawn away from the city.putabunt enim nos fugere sicut prius. For they will think that we are fleeing as before.
Nobis ergo fugientibus,Then,et illis persequentibus, while we are fleeing and they are pursuing, consurgetis de insidiis, you shall rise up from the ambush,et vastabitis civitatem:and you shall lay waste to the city.tradetque eam Dominus Deus vester in manus vestras. And the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands.
Cumque ceperitis, succendite eam,And when you have seized it, set it on fire.et sic omnia facietis, ut jussi. And you shall do all that I have ordered.”
Dimisitque eos,And he sent them away,et perrexerunt ad locum insidiarum, and they traveled to the place of the ambush, sederuntque inter Bethel et Hai,and they settled between Bethel and Ai,ad occidentalem plagam urbis Hai:toward the western region of the city of Ai.Josue autem nocte illa in medio mansit populi,But Joshua remained for that night in the midst of the people.
surgensque diluculo recensuit socios,And rising at first light, he reviewed his troops,et ascendit cum senioribus in fronte exercitus, and he went up, with the elders at the front of the army, vallatus auxilio pugnatorum.surrounded by an auxiliary of fighters.
Cumque venissentAnd when they had arrived,et ascendissent ex adverso civitatis, and had ascended from the opposite side of the city, steterunt ad septentrionalem urbis plagam, they stood toward the northern region of the city.inter quamAnd there was a valley in the middle,et eos erat vallis media.between them and the city.
Quinque autem millia viros elegerat,Now he had chosen five thousand men,et posuerat in insidiis inter Betheland he had positioned them in ambush between Bethel and Ai,et Hai ex occidentali parte ejusdem civitatis:at the western part of the same city.
omnis vero reliquus exercitus ad aquilonem aciem dirigebat,Yet truly, all the remainder of the army was arranged in a line to the north, ita ut novissimi illius multitudinis occidentalem plagam urbis attingerent.so that the very end of that multitude reached to the western region of the city.Abiit ergo Josue nocte illa,Then Joshua went out that night,et stetit in vallis medio.and he stood in the middle of the valley.
Quod cum vidisset rex Hai,And when the king of Ai had seen this, festinavit mane,he hurried in the morning,et egressus est cum omni exercitu civitatis, and he went out with the entire army of the city.direxitque aciem contra desertum,And he arranged them in a line opposite the desert, ignorans quod post tergum laterent insidiæ.not knowing that an ambush lay hidden behind his back.
Josue vero et omnis Israël cesserunt loco,Yet truly, Joshua, and all of Israel, simulantes metum, withdrew from the place,et fugientes per solitudinis viam.pretending to be afraid, and fleeing along the way of the wilderness.
At illi vociferantes pariter,And they pursued them,et se mutuo cohortantes, shouting togetherpersecuti sunt eos.and encouraging one another.Cumque recessissent a civitate,And when they had withdrawn from the city,
et ne unus quidem in urbe Haiand indeed not one remained in the city of Ai and of Bethel who did not pursue after Israel,et Bethel remansisset qui non persequeretur Israël (sicut eruperant aperta oppida relinquentes),(leaving the towns open after they had rushed out,)
dixit Dominus ad Josue:the Lord said to Joshua:Leva clypeum, qui in manu tua est,“Lift up the shield that is in your hand, contra urbem Hai,toward the city of Ai.quoniam tibi tradam eam.For I will deliver it to you.”
Cumque elevasset clypeum ex adverso civitatis,And when he had lifted up the shield toward the city, insidiæ,the ambush,quæ latebant, which lay hidden, surrexerunt confestim:rose up quickly.et pergentes ad civitatem,And advancing to the city, ceperunt, they seized it,et succenderunt eam.and set it on fire.
Viri autem civitatis, qui persequebantur Josue,Now the men of the city who were pursuing Joshua, respicientes et videntes fumum urbis ad cælum usque conscendere, looking back and seeing the smoke of the city rising up even to heaven, non potuerunt ultra huc illucque diffugere:were no longer able to flee in one direction or another,præsertim cum hi qui simulaverant fugam, especially since those who had pretended to flee,et tendebant ad solitudinem, and who were heading toward the wilderness, contra persequentes fortissime restitissent.had turned back very strongly against those who were pursuing them.
Vidensque Josue et omnis Israël quod capta esset civitas,And Joshua, and all of Israel, seeing that the city had been captured,et fumus urbis ascenderet, and that the smoke of the city was ascending, reversus percussit viros Hai.returned and struck down the men of Ai.
SiquidemThen too,et illi qui ceperantthose who had seized and set the city on fire,et succenderant civitatem, departing from the city toward their own men, egressi ex urbe contra suos, began to strike the enemies in the middle.medios hostium ferire cœperunt. Therefore,Cum ergo ex utraque parte adversarii cæderentur, since the adversaries were cut off from both sides, ita ut nullus de tanta multitudine salvaretur, none of so great a multitude was saved.
regem quoque urbis Hai apprehenderunt viventem,Also, they apprehended the king of the city of Ai, alive,et obtulerunt Josue.and they brought him before Joshua.
Igitur omnibus interfectis,And so,qui Israëlem ad deserta tendentem fuerant persecuti, after all were slain who had pursued Israel fleeing toward the wilderness,et in eodem loco gladio corruentibus, and after they fell by the sword in the same place, reversi filii Israël percusserunt civitatem.the sons of Israel returned and struck the city.
Erant autem qui in eodem die conciderant a viro usque ad mulierem,Now there were twelve thousand persons who had fallen on the same day, duodecim millia hominum, from man even to woman, omnes urbis Hai.the entire city of Ai.
Josue vero non contraxit manum,Truly Joshua did not draw back his hand, quam in sublime porrexerat, which he had stretched out on high, tenens clypeum donec interficerentur omnes habitatores Hai.keeping hold of the shield until all the inhabitants of Ai were put to death.
Jumenta autem et prædam civitatis diviserunt sibi filii Israël,Then the sons of Israel divided among themselves the cattle and the plunder of the city, sicut præceperat Dominus Josue.just as the Lord had instructed Joshua.
Qui succendit urbem,And he set fire to the city,et fecit eam tumulum sempiternum:and he caused it to be a perpetual tomb.
regem quoque ejus suspendit in patibulo usque ad vesperam et solis occasum. Also, he suspended the king on a gallows, until evening and the setting of the sun.Præcepitque Josue,And Joshua instructed,et deposuerunt cadaver ejus de cruce:and they took down his dead body from the hanging tree.projeceruntque in ipso introitu civitatis,And they cast it at the very entrance of the city, congesto super eum magno acervo lapidum, gathering a great pile of stones upon it,qui permanet usque in præsentem diem.which remains even to the present day.
Tunc ædificavit Josue altare Domino Deo Israël in monte Hebal,Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
sicut præceperat Moyses famulus Domini filiis Israël,just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had instructed to the sons of Israel,et scriptum est in volumine legis Moysi:and this was written in the book of the law of Moses:altare vero de lapidibus impolitis, truly, an altar of uncut stones, quos ferrum non tetigit:which iron has not touched.et obtulit super eo holocausta Domino,And he offered holocausts upon it to the Lord, immolavitque pacificas victimas.and he immolated victims as peace-offerings.
Et scripsit super lapides Deuteronomium legis Moysi,And he wrote on the stones, the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, quod ille digesserat coram filiis Israël.which he had set in order before the sons of Israel.
Omnis autem populus,Then all the people,et majores natu, and those greater by birth, ducesqueand the commanders and judges were standing on both sides of the ark,ac judices,in the sight of the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, stabant ex utraque parte arcæ,with both the new arrival and the native born,in conspectu sacerdotum qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, one half part of them beside Mount Gerizim,ut advena, and one half beside Mount Ebal, itajust as Moses,et indigena.the servant of the Lord,Media pars eorum juxta montem Garizim, had instructed.et media juxta montem Hebal,And first, sicut præceperat Moyses famulus Domini.certainly,Et primum quidem benedixit populo Israël.he blessed the people of Israel.
Post hæc legit omnia verba benedictionisAfter this,et maledictionis,he read all the words of the blessing and the cursing,et cuncta quæ scripta erant in legis volumine.and all the things that were written in the book of the law.
Nihil ex his quæ Moyses jusserat,He left nothing untouched out of those things that Moses had ordered, reliquit intactum, and he repeated everything before the entire multitude of Israel, sed universa replicavit coram omni multitudine Israël,with the womenmulieribus ac parvulis, and the little ones,et advenis qui inter eos morabantur.and the new arrivals who were staying among them.
