Filii autem Israël prævaricati sunt mandatum,But the sons of Israel transgressed the commandment, and they usurped what was anathema.et usurpaverunt de anathemate. For Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi,Nam Achan filius Charmi filii Zabdi filii Zare de tribu Juda tulit aliquid de anathemate:the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took something from what was anathema.iratusque est Dominus contra filios Israël.And the Lord became angry against the sons of Israel.

Cumque mitteret Josue de Jericho viros contra Hai,And when Joshua sent men from Jericho against Ai,quæ est juxta Bethaven, which is beside Bethaven,ad orientalem plagam oppidi Bethel, toward the eastern region of the town of Bethel, dixit eis:he said to them,Ascendite,“Go up and explore the land.”et explorate terram. And they fulfilled his instruction,Qui præcepta complentes exploraverunt Hai.and they explored Ai.

Et reversi dixerunt ei:And returning,Non ascendat omnis populus, they said to him:sed duo“Let not the entire people go up.vel tria millia virorum pergant,Instead,et deleant civitatem:let two or three thousand men go out and destroy the city.quare omnis populus frustra vexabitur contra hostes paucissimos? Why should all the people be troubled without cause against enemies that are so very few?”

Ascenderunt ergo tria millia pugnatorum. Therefore, they went up with three thousand fighters.Qui statim terga vertentes,And they promptly turned their backs,

percussi sunt a viris urbis Hai, et corruerunt ex eis triginta sex homines:and were struck down by the men of the city of Ai. And thirty-six men of them fell.persecutique sunt eos adversarii de porta usque ad Sabarim,And the adversaries pursued them from the gate, even as far as Shebarim.et ceciderunt per prona fugientes:And they felled them as they were fleeing downward.pertimuitque cor populi, et instar aquæ liquefactum est.And the heart of the people was struck with fear, and it melted like water.

Josue vero scidit vestimenta sua,And truly, Joshua tore his garments,et pronus cecidit in terram coram arca Domini usque ad vesperam, and he fell prone on the ground before the ark of the Lord, even until evening, tam ipse quam omnes senes Israël:both he and all the elders of Israel.miseruntque pulverem super capita sua,And they cast dust upon their heads.

et dixit Josue:And Joshua said:Heu Domine Deus,“Alas, quid voluisti traducere populum istum Jordanem fluvium,O Lord God!ut traderes nos in manus Amorrhæi,Why would you want to lead this people over the river Jordan,et perderes?so that you might deliver us into the hand of the Amorite and destroy us?utinam ut cœpimus,I wish that we had remained beyond the Jordan, mansissemus trans Jordanem.as when we began.

Mi Domine Deus,My Lord God,quid dicam, what shall I say, videns Israëlem hostibus suis terga vertentem?seeing Israel turning their backs to their enemies?

Audient Chananæi,The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it,et omnes habitatores terræ,and coming together as one,et pariter conglobati circumdabunt nos, they will surround us,atque delebunt nomen nostrum de terra:and they will wipe our name from the earth.et quid facies magno nomini tuo?And what will you do concerning your great name?”

Dixitque Dominus ad Josue:And the Lord said to Joshua:Surge:“Rise up.cur jaces pronus in terra? Why are you lying flat on the ground?

Peccavit Israël, et prævaricatus est pactum meum:Israel has sinned and transgressed my covenant.tuleruntque de anathemate,And they have taken from what is anathema.et furati sunt atque mentiti,And they have stolen and lied,et absconderunt inter vasa sua.and they have hidden it among their goods.

Nec poterit Israël stare ante hostes suos,Israel is not able to stand before his enemies, eosque fugiet:and he will flee from them.quia pollutus est anathemate. For he has been defiled by what is anathema.Non ero ultra vobiscum,I will no longer be with you, donec conteratis eum qui hujus sceleris reus est.until you destroy him who is guilty of this wickedness.

Surge,Rise up.sanctifica populum,Sanctify the people.et dic eis: Sanctificamini in crastinum:And you shall say to them: ‘Be sanctified tomorrow.hæc enim dicit Dominus Deus Israël:For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Anathema in medio tui est,That which is anathema is in your midst,Israël:O Israel!non poteris stare coram hostibus tuis,You are not able to stand before your enemies, donec deleatur ex te qui hoc contaminatus est scelere.until he who has been contaminated by this wickedness is taken away from you.’

Accedetisque mane singuli per tribus vestras:And you shall draw near in the morning,et quamcumque tribum sors invenerit, each one by your tribes.accedet per cognationes suas,And whichever tribe will be found by lot shall come forward by its families,et cognatio per domos, and the families by houses, domusque per viros.and the house by the men.

Et quicumque ille in hoc facinore fuerit deprehensus,And whoever he may be that will be found guilty of this deed, comburetur igni cum omni substantia sua:he shall be burnt with fire with all his substance.quoniam prævaricatus est pactum Domini,For he transgressed the covenant of the Lord,et fecit nefas in Israël.and he committed a wicked act in Israel.”

Surgens itaque Josue mane,And so Joshua, rising in the morning, applicuit Israël per tribus suas, brought forth Israel by their tribes,et inventa est tribus Juda.and the tribe of Judah was found.

Quæ cum juxta familias suas esset oblata,And when its families had been presented, inventa est familia Zare.the family of Zerah was found. Likewise,Illam quoque per domos offerens, bringing that one forward by the houses, reperit Zabdi:he discovered Zabdi.

cujus domum in singulos dividens viros, invenit Achan filium Charmi filii Zabdi filii Zare de tribu Juda. And dividing his house by each man, he found Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah.

Et ait Josue ad Achan:And Joshua said to Achan:Fili mi,“My son,da gloriam Domino Deo Israël,give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel,et confitere, and confess, atque indica mihi quid feceris, ne abscondas.and reveal to me what you have done. You may not conceal it.”

Responditque Achan Josue,And Achan responded to Joshua,et dixit ei:and he said to him:Vere ego peccavi Domino Deo Israël,“Truly, I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel,et sic et sic feci.and I have done one thing and another.

Vidi enim inter spolia pallium coccineum valde bonum,For I saw among the spoils a very fine scarlet cloak,et ducentos siclos argenti, and two hundred shekels of silver, regulamque auream quinquaginta siclorum:and a gold bar of fifty shekels.et concupiscens abstuli,And coveting these,et abscondi in terra contra medium tabernaculi mei,I took and hid them in the ground near the middle of my tent, argentumque fossa humo operui.and I covered the silver with the soil that I had dug.”

Misit ergo Josue ministros:Therefore, Joshua sent ministers, qui currentes ad tabernaculum illius, who, running to his tent, repererunt cuncta abscondita in eodem loco, discovered everything hidden in the same place,et argentum simul.together with the silver.

Auferentesque de tentorio,And taking these from the tent, tulerunt ea ad Josue, they brought them to Joshua,et ad omnes filios Israël,and to all the sons of Israel, projeceruntque ante Dominum.and they cast them down before the Lord.

Tollens itaque Josue Achan filium Zare,And so Joshua took Achan, the son of Zerah, argentumque et pallium, and the silver, and the cloak,et auream regulam, and the gold bar, filios quoque et filias ejus, also his sons and daughters, boves et asinos et oves, the oxen and donkeys and sheep, ipsumque tabernaculum, et cunctam supellectilem (et omnis Israël cum eo),and even the tent and all his goods, (and all of Israel went with him,)duxerunt eos ad vallem Achor:and he brought these to the valley of Achor.

ubi dixit Josue:There, Joshua said:Quia turbasti nos,“Because you have troubled us,exturbet te Dominus in die hac.the Lord troubles you, on this day.”Lapidavitque eum omnis Israël:And all of Israel stoned him.et cuncta quæ illius erant, igne consumpta sunt. And all the things that were his were consumed by fire.

Congregaveruntque super eum acervum magnum lapidum,And they gathered upon him a great pile of stones, qui permanet usque in præsentem diem.which remains even to the present day.Et aversus est furor Domini ab eis.And the fury of the Lord was averted from them.Vocatumque est nomen loci illius, vallis Achor,And the name of that place was called the Valley of Achor, usque hodie.even to this day.
