Ascenditque angelus Domini de Galgalis ad Locum flentium,And an Angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to the Place of Weeping,et ait:and he said:Eduxi vos de Ægypto,“I led you away from Egypt,et introduxi in terram, and I led you into the land, pro qua juravi patribus vestris:about which I swore to your fathers.et pollicitus sum ut non facerem irritum pactum meum vobiscum in sempiternum,And I promised that I would not nullify my covenant with you, even forever:

ita dumtaxat ut non feriretis fœdus cum habitatoribus terræ hujus, but only if you would not form a pact with the inhabitants of this land. Instead, sed aras eorum subverteretis:you should overturn their altars.et noluistis audire vocem meam:Yet you were not willing to listen to my voice.cur hoc fecistis? Why have you done this?

Quam ob rem nolui delere eos a facie vestra:For this reason, I am not willing to destroy them before your face,ut habeatis hostes,so that you may have enemies,et dii eorum sint vobis in ruinam.and so that their gods may be your ruin.”

Cumque loqueretur angelus Domini hæc verba ad omnes filios Israël,And when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, elevaverunt ipsi vocem suam, they lifted up their voice,et fleverunt.and they wept.

Et vocatum est nomen loci illius,And the name of that place was called,Locus flentium, the Place of Weeping, sive lacrimarum:or the Place of Tears.immolaveruntque ibi hostias Domini. And they immolated victims to the Lord in that place.

Dimisit ergo Josue populum,Then Joshua dismissed the people,et abierunt filii Israël unusquisque in possessionem suam, and the sons of Israel went away, each one to his own possession,ut obtinerent eam:so that they might obtain it.

servieruntque Domino cunctis diebus ejus,And they served the Lord, during all his days,et seniorum, qui longo post eum vixerunt tempore, and during all the days of the elders, who lived for a long time after him,et noverant omnia opera Domini quæ fecerat cum Israël.and who knew all the works of the Lord, which he had done for Israel.

Mortuus est autem Josue filius Nun,Then Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, famulus Domini, centum et decem annorum, died, being one hundred and ten years old.

et sepelierunt eum in finibus possessionis suæ in Thamnathsare in monte Ephraim,And they buried him in the parts of his possession at Timnath-Serah, on Mount Ephraim,a septentrionali plaga montis Gaas.before the northern side of Mount Gaash.

Omnisque illa generatio congregata est ad patres suos:And that entire generation was gathered to their fathers.et surrexerunt alii,And there rose up others, qui non noverant Dominum, who had not known the Lordet opera quæ fecerat cum Israël.and the works that he had done for Israel.

Feceruntque filii Israël malum in conspectu Domini,And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord,et servierunt Baalim.and they served the Baals.

Ac dimiserunt Dominum Deum patrum suorum,And they abandoned the Lord, qui eduxerat eos de terra Ægypti, the God of their fathers,et secuti sunt deos alienos, who had led them away from the land of Egypt.deosque populorum,And they followed foreign godsqui habitabant in circuitu eorum, and the gods of the peoples who were living around them,et adoraverunt eos:and they adored them.et ad iracundiam concitaverunt Dominum,And they provoked the Lord to wrath,

dimittentes eum, forsaking him,et servientes Baal et Astaroth.and serving Baal and Ashtaroth.

Iratusque Dominus contra Israël,And the Lord, tradidit eos in manus diripientium:having become angry against Israel, qui ceperunt eos, delivered them into the hands of plunderers,et vendiderunt hostibus qui habitabant per gyrum:who seized them and sold them to the enemies that were living on all sides.nec potuerunt resistere adversariis suis,Neither were they able to withstand their adversaries.

sed quocumque pergere voluissent,Instead, manus Domini super eos erat, wherever they wanted to go,sicut locutus est,the hand of the Lord was upon them,et juravit eis, just as he said and just as he swore to them.et vehementer afflicti sunt. And they were greatly afflicted.

Suscitavitque Dominus judices,And the Lord raised up judges, qui liberarent eos de vastantium manibus:who would free them from the hands of their oppressors.sed nec eos audire voluerunt,But they were not willing to listen to them.

fornicantes cum diis alienis, et adorantes eos.Fornicating with foreign gods and adoring them,Cito deseruerunt viam, per quam ingressi fuerant patres eorum:they quickly deserted the way along which their fathers had advanced.et audientes mandata Domini,And having heard the commandments of the Lord, omnia fecere contraria.they did all things to the contrary.

Cumque Dominus judices suscitaret,And while the Lord was raising up the judges,in diebus eorum flectebatur misericordia,in their days, he was moved to mercy,et audiebat afflictorum gemitus, and he listened to the groaning of the afflicted,et liberabat eos de cæde vastantium.and he freed them from the slaughter of their oppressors.

Postquam autem mortuus esset judex,But after a judge had died, revertebantur, they turned back,et multo faciebant pejora quam fecerant patres eorum, and they were doing much worse things than their fathers had done, sequentes deos alienos, following strange gods, servientes eis, serving them,et adorantes illos.and adoring them.Non dimiserunt adinventiones suas,They did not abandon their pursuits and their very stubborn way,et viam durissimam per quam ambulare consueverunt.by which they were accustomed to walk.

Iratusque est furor Domini in Israël,And the fury of the Lord was enraged against Israel,et ait:and he said:Quia irritum fecit gens ista pactum meum,“For this people has made void my covenant, quod pepigeram cum patribus eorum, which I had formed with their fathers,et vocem meam audire contempsit:and they have despised listening to my voice.

et ego non delebo gentes, quas dimisit Josue, et mortuus est:And so, I will not destroy the nations that Joshua left behind when he died,

ut in ipsis experiar Israël,so that, by them, I may test Israel, utrum custodiant viam Domini, et ambulent in ea,as to whether or not they will keep the way of the Lord, sicut custodierunt patres eorum, an non.and walk in it, just as their fathers kept it.”

Dimisit ergo Dominus omnes nationes has,Therefore, the Lord left all these nations,et cito subvertere noluit, and he was not willing to quickly overthrow them, nec tradidit in manus Josue.nor did he deliver them into the hands of Joshua.
