Juraverunt quoque filii Israël in Maspha,The sons of Israel had also taken an oath at Mizpah,et dixerunt:and they said,Nullus nostrum dabit filiis Benjamin de filiabus suis uxorem.“None of us shall give his daughters as a wife to the sons of Benjamin.”
Veneruntque omnes ad domum Dei in Silo,And they all went to the house of God at Shiloh.et in conspectu ejus sedentes usque ad vesperam, levaverunt vocem,And sitting in his sight until evening, they lifted up their voice,et magno ululatu cœperunt flere, and they began to weep, with a great wailing, dicentes:saying,
Quare,“Why,Domine Deus Israël,O Lord, God of Israel, factum est hoc malum in populo tuo,has this evil happened among your people,ut hodie una tribus auferretur ex nobis?so that this day one tribe would be taken away from us?”
Altera autem die diluculo consurgentes,Then, exstruxerunt altare:rising at first light on the next day, obtuleruntque ibi holocausta, they built an altar.et pacificas victimas,And they offered holocausts and victims of peace offerings there,et dixerunt:and they said,
Quis non ascendit in exercitu Domini de universis tribubus Israël?“Who, out of all the tribes of Israel, did not ascend with the army of the Lord?”grandi enim juramento se constrinxerant,For they had bound themselves with a great oath, cum essent in Maspha, when they were at Mizpah, interfici eos qui defuissent.that whoever was not present would be slain.
Ductique pœnitentia filii Israël super fratre suo Benjamin,And the sons of Israel, having been led to repentance over their brother Benjamin,cœperunt dicere: Ablata est tribus una de Israël:began to say: “One tribe has been taken away from Israel.
unde uxores accipient? From where shall they receive wives?omnes enim in commune juravimus, non daturos nos his filias nostras. For we have all sworn in common that we will not give our daughters to them.”
Idcirco dixerunt:For this reason, they said,Quis est de universis tribubus Israël,“Who is there, out of all the tribes of Israel, qui non ascendit ad Dominum in Maspha?that did not ascend to the Lord at Mizpah?”Et ecce inventi sunt habitatores Jabes Galaad in illo exercitu non fuisse. And behold, the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead were found not to have been among that army.
(Eo quoque tempore cum essent in Silo,(Likewise, in the time when they had been at Shiloh, nullus ex eis ibi repertus est.)not one of them was found to be there.)
Miserunt itaque decem millia viros robustissimos,And so they sent ten thousand very robust men,et præceperunt eis:and they instructed them,Ite,saying,et percutite habitatores Jabes Galaad in ore gladii,“Go and strike down the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead with the edge of the sword, tam uxores quam parvulos eorum.including their wives and little ones.”
Et hoc erit quod observare debebitis:And this shall be what you ought to do:omne generis masculini,“Every one of the male gender,et mulieres quæ cognoverunt viros,as well as all the women who have known men, interficite;shall be put to death.virgines autem reservate. But the virgins you shall reserve.”
Inventæque sunt de Jabes Galaad quadringentæ virgines,And four hundred virgins, who had not known the bed of a man,quæ nescierunt viri thorum:were found from Jabesh-Gilead.et adduxerunt eas ad castra in Silo,And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh,in terram Chanaan.in the land of Canaan.
Miseruntque nuntios ad filios Benjamin,And they sent messengers to the sons of Benjamin, qui erant in petra Remmon, who were at the rock of Rimmon,et præceperunt eis,and they instructed them,ut eos susciperent in pace.so that they would receive them in peace.
Veneruntque filii Benjamin in illo tempore,And the sons of Benjamin went, at that time,et datæ sunt eis uxores de filiabus Jabes Galaad:and wives were given to them from the daughters of Jabesh-Gilead.alias autem non repererunt, quas simili modo traderent. But others were not found, whom they might give in a similar manner.
Universusque Israël valde doluit,And all of Israel was very saddened,et egit pœnitentiam super interfectione unius tribus ex Israël.and they did penance for destroying one tribe out of Israel.
Dixeruntque majores natu:And those greater by birth said:Quid faciemus reliquis,“What shall we do with the remainder, qui non acceperunt uxores?those who have not received wives?omnes in Benjamin feminæ conciderunt,For all the females of Benjamin have been cut down,
et magna nobis cura, and we must take great care, ingentique studio providendum est,and make provision with a very great diligence,ne una tribus deleatur ex Israël.so that one tribe may not be wiped away from Israel.
Filias enim nostras eis dare non possumus,As for our own daughters, we are not able to give them, constricti juramento et maledictione qua diximus:being bound by an oath and a curse, when we said,Maledictus qui dederit de filiabus suis uxorem Benjamin.‘Accursed is he who will give any of his daughters to Benjamin as a wife.’”
Ceperuntque consilium,And they took counsel, atque dixerunt:and they said,Ecce solemnitas Domini est in Silo anniversaria,“Behold,quæ sita est ad septentrionem urbis Bethel, there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord at Shiloh,et ad orientalem plagam viæ,which is situated to the north of the city of Bethel,quæ de Bethel tendit ad Sichimam, and on the eastern side of the way that one takes from Bethel to Shechem,et ad meridiem oppidi Lebona.and to the south of the town of Lebonah.”
Præceperuntque filiis Benjamin,And they instructed the sons of Benjamin, atque dixerunt:and they said:Ite,“Go,et latitate in vineis.and hide in the vineyards.
Cumque videritis filias Silo ad ducendos choros ex more procedere,And when you will have seen daughters of Shiloh being led out to dance, according to custom, exite repente de vineis,go forth suddenly from the vineyards,et rapite ex eis singuli uxores singulas, and let each one seize one wife from among them,et pergite in terram Benjamin.and travel into the land of Benjamin.
Cumque venerint patres earum,And when their fathers and brothers arrive,ac fratres, and they begin to complain against you and to argue,et adversum vos queri cœperint atque jurgari,we will say to them:dicemus eis:‘Take pity on them.Miseremini eorum:For they have not seized them by right of war or conquest.non enim rapuerunt eas jure bellantium atque victorum:Instead, sed rogantibus ut acciperent, begging to receive them, non dedistis, you did not give them,et a vestra parte peccatum est.and so the sin was on your part.’”
Feceruntque filii Benjamin ut sibi fuerat imperatum:And so the sons of Benjamin did just as they had been ordered.et juxta numerum suum,And according to their number, rapuerunt sibi de his quæ ducebant choros, uxores singulas:they seized for themselves one wife each, out of those who were led out dancing.abieruntque in possessionem suam ædificantes urbes,And they went into their own possession, and they built up their cities,et habitantes in eis.and they lived in them.
Filii quoque Israël reversi sunt per tribus et familias in tabernacula sua.The sons of Israel also returned, according to their tribes and families, to their tents. In diebus illis non erat rex in Israël:In those days, there was no king in Israel.sed unusquisque quod sibi rectum videbatur, hoc faciebat.Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.
