In diebus unius judicis,In the days of one of the judges, quando judices præerant, when the judges ruled, facta est fames in terra.there was a famine in the land.Abiitque homo de Bethlehem Juda,And a man from Bethlehem in Judah departed to sojourn in the region of the Moabites with his wifeut peregrinaretur in regione Moabitide cum uxore sua ac duobus liberis.and two children.
Ipse vocabatur Elimelech,He called himself Elimelech,et uxor ejus Noëmi:and his wife Naomi,et duo filii, and his two sons, alter Mahalon, the one Mahlon,et alter Chelion, and the other Chilion,Ephrathæi de Bethlehem Juda.Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah.Ingressique regionem Moabitidem,And entering into the region of the Moabites, morabantur ibi.they stayed there.
Et mortuus est Elimelech maritus Noëmi:And Elimelech the husband of Naomi died;remansitque ipsa cum filiis.and she remained with her sons.
Qui acceperunt uxores Moabitidas,They took wives from among the Moabites, quarum una vocabatur Orpha,of whom one was called Orpah, altera vero Ruth.and the other Ruth.Manseruntque ibi decem annis,And they lived there ten years.
et ambo mortui sunt,And they both died,Mahalon videlicet et Chelion:namely Mahlon and Chilion, remansitque mulier orbata duobus liberis ac marito.and the woman was left alone, bereaved of her two children and her husband.
Et surrexit ut in patriam pergeret cum utraque nuru sua de regione Moabitide:And she arose so that she might journey to her native land, with both her daughters-in-law,audierat enim quod respexisset Dominus populum suum, et dedisset eis escas.from the region of the Moabites. For she had heard that the Lord had provided for his people and had given them food.
Egressa est itaque de loco peregrinationis suæ, cum utraque nuru:And so she departed from the place of her sojourn, with both her daughters-in-law,et jam in via revertendi posita in terram Juda, and having set out upon the way, she was about to return to the land of Judah.
dixit ad eas:She said to them,Ite in domum matris vestræ:“Go to the home of your mother.faciat vobiscum Dominus misericordiam,May the Lord deal mercifully with you, sicut fecistis cum mortuis, just as you have dealt with the deadet mecum.and with me.
Det vobis invenire requiem in domibus virorum quos sortituræ estis.May he grant you to find rest in the houses of the husbands, whom you will obtain by lot.”Et osculata est eas.And she kissed them.Quæ elevata voce flere cœperunt,They lifted up their voice, and began to weep,
et dicere:and to say,Tecum pergemus ad populum tuum.“We will journey with you to your people.”
Quibus illa respondit:But she answered them,Revertimini,“Return, filiæ meæ,my daughters.cur venitis mecum? Why come with me?num ultra habeo filios in utero meo,Do I have any more sons in my womb,ut viros ex me sperare possitis?so that you could hope for husbands from me?
Revertimini,Return, filiæ meæ,my daughters,et abite:go forth.jam enim senectute confecta sum,For I am now exhausted by old age,nec apta vinculo conjugali:and not fit for the bond of marriage.etiamsi possem hac nocte concipere,Even if I were to conceive on this night,et parere filios, and bear sons,
si eos expectare velitis donec crescant,if you were willing to wait until they were grownet annos pubertatis impleant, and had completed the years of adolescence, ante eritis vetulæ quam nubatis.you would be elderly before you could marry.Nolite,Do not do so,quæso,I beg you, filiæ meæ:my daughters.quia vestra angustia magis me premit,For your difficulties weigh upon me greatly,et egressa est manus Domini contra me.and the hand of the Lord has been set against me.”
Elevata igitur voce,In response, rursum flere cœperunt:they lifted up their voice and began to weep again.Orpha osculata est socrum,Orpah kissed her mother-in-law,ac reversa est;and then turned back.Ruth adhæsit socrui suæ:Ruth clung to her mother-in-law.
cui dixit Noëmi:Naomi said to her,En reversa est cognata tua ad populum suum,“See, your kinswoman returns to her people,et ad deos suos, and to her gods.vade cum ea.Hurry after her.”
Quæ respondit:She answered,Ne adverseris mihi ut relinquam te“Do not be against me,et abeam:as if I would abandon you and go away;quocumque enim perrexeris, for wherever you will go,pergam,I will go,et ubi morata fueris, and where you will stay,et ego pariter morabor.I also will stay with you.Populus tuus populus meus,Your people are my people,et Deus tuus Deus meus.and your God is my God.
Quæ te terra morientem susceperit,Whichever land will receive you dying,in ea moriar:in the same I will die, ibique locum accipiam sepulturæ.and there I will have the place of my burial.Hæc mihi faciat Dominus,May God cause these things to happen to me,et hæc addat, and add more also,si non sola mors me et te separaverit.if anything except death alone should separate you and I.”
Videns ergo Noëmi quod obstinato animo Ruth decrevisset secum pergere, adversari noluit, nec ad suos ultra reditum persuadere:Therefore, Naomi saw that Ruth, being firmly resolved in her soul, was determined to go with her, and that she was unwilling to be dissuaded, and that nothing further could convince her to return to her own.
profectæque sunt simul,And so they set out together,et venerunt in Bethlehem.and they came to Bethlehem.Quibus urbem ingressis,When they had entered the city, velox apud cunctos fama percrebruit:the news quickly spread among them all.dicebantque mulieres:And the women said,Hæc est illa Noëmi.“This is that Naomi.”
Quibus ait:But she said to them,Ne vocetis me Noëmi (id est,“Do not call me Naomi (that is,pulchram),beautiful),sed vocate me Mara (id est,but call me Mara (that is,amaram),bitter).quia amaritudine valde replevit me Omnipotens. For the Almighty has greatly filled me with bitterness.
Egressa sum plena, et vacuam reduxit me Dominus.I went out full and the Lord led me back empty.Cur ergo vocatis me Noëmi,So then, why call me Naomi, quam Dominus humiliavit, et afflixit Omnipotens?whom the Lord has humbled and the Almighty has afflicted?”
Venit ergo Noëmi cum Ruth Moabitide nuru sua,Therefore, Naomi went with Ruth, the Moabite,de terra peregrinationis suæ:her daughter-in-law, from the land of her sojourn,ac reversa est in Bethlehem, quando primum hordea metebantur.and returned to Bethlehem, at the time of the first reaping of the barley.
