Fecerunt autem filii Israël malum in conspectu Domini:Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, qui tradidit illos in manu Madian septem annis, who delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years.

et oppressi sunt valde ab eis.And they were greatly oppressed by them.Feceruntque sibi antra et speluncas in montibus,And they made for themselves hollows and caves in the mountains,et munitissima ad repugnandum loca.and very fortified places for defense.

Cumque sevisset Israël,And when Israel had planted, ascendebat Madian et Amalec,Midian and Amalek, ceterique orientalium nationum:and the rest of the eastern nations ascended,

et apud eos figentes tentoria, and pitching their tents among them, sicut erant in herbis cuncta vastabant usque ad introitum Gazæ:they laid waste to all that was planted, as far as the entrance to Gaza.nihilque omnino ad vitam pertinens relinquebant in Israël,And they left behind nothing at all to sustain life in Israel, non oves, non boves, neither sheep, nor oxen, non asinos.nor donkeys.

Ipsi enim et universi greges eorum veniebant cum tabernaculis suis,For they and all their flocks arrived with their tents,et instar locustarum universa complebant, and they filled all places like locusts, innumera multitudo hominum et camelorum,an innumerable multitude of men and camels, quidquid tetigerant devastantes.devastating whatever they touched.

Humiliatusque est Israël valde in conspectu Madian. And Israel was humbled greatly in the sight of Midian.

Et clamavit ad Dominum postulans auxilium contra Madianitas. And he cried out to the Lord, requesting assistance against the Midianites.

Qui misit ad eos virum prophetam, et locutus est:And he sent to them a man who was a prophet, and he said:Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël:“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:Ego vos feci conscendere de Ægypto, et eduxi vos de domo servitutis,‘I caused you to ascend from Egypt, and I led you away from the house of servitude.

et liberavi de manu Ægyptiorum,And I freed you from the hand of the Egyptianset omnium inimicorum qui affligebant vos:and from all of the enemies who were afflicting you.ejecique eos ad introitum vestrum,And I cast them out at your arrival,et tradidi vobis terram eorum.and I delivered their land to you.

Et dixi:And I said:Ego Dominus Deus vester:I am the Lord your God.ne timeatis deos Amorrhæorum,You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites,in quorum terra habitatis.in whose land you live.Et noluistis audire vocem meam. But you were not willing to listen to my voice.’”

Venit autem angelus Domini,Then an Angel of the Lord arrived,et sedit sub quercu, and he sat under an oak tree,quæ erat in Ephra, which was at Ophrah,et pertinebat ad Joas patrem familiæ Ezri.and which belonged to Joash,Cumque Gedeon filius ejus excuteretthe father of the family of Ezri.atque purgaret frumenta in torculari,And while his son Gideon was threshing and cleaning the grain at the winepress,ut fugeret Madian,so that he might flee from Midian,

apparuit ei angelus Domini, the Angel of the Lord appeared to him,et ait:and he said:Dominus tecum,“The Lord is with you, virorum fortissime.most valiant of men.”

Dixitque ei Gedeon:And Gideon said to him:Obsecro, mi domine,“I beg you, my lord,si Dominus nobiscum est,if the Lord is with us,cur apprehenderunt nos hæc omnia?why have these things happened to us?ubi sunt mirabilia ejus,Where are his miracles,quæ narraverunt patres nostri, atque dixerunt:which our fathers described when they said,De Ægypto eduxit nos Dominus?‘The Lord led us away from Egypt.’nunc autem dereliquit nos Dominus, et tradidit in manu Madian. But now the Lord has forsaken us, and he has delivered us into the hand of Midian.”

Respexitque ad eum Dominus,And the Lord looked down upon him,et ait:and he said:Vade in hac fortitudine tua,“Go forth with this, your strength,et liberabis Israël de manu Madian:and you shall free Israel from the hand of Midian.scito quod miserim te.Know that I have sent you.”

Qui respondens ait:And responding, he said:Obsecro,“I beg you,mi domine, in quo liberabo Israël?my lord, with what shall I free Israel?ecce familia mea infima est in Manasse,Behold, my family is the weakest in Manasseh,et ego minimus in domo patris mei.and I am the least in the house of my father.”

Dixitque ei Dominus:And the Lord said to him:Ego ero tecum:“I will be with you.et percuties Madian quasi unum virum. And so, you shall cut down Midian as if one man.”

Et ille:And he said:Si inveni, inquit, gratiam coram te,“If I have found grace before you,da mihi signum quod tu sis qui loqueris ad me:give me a sign that it is you who is speaking to me.

nec recedas hinc,And may you not withdraw from here, donec revertar ad te,until I return to you, portans sacrificium, carrying a sacrificeet offerens tibi.and offering it to you.”Qui respondit:And he responded,Ego præstolabor adventum tuum.“I will wait for your return.”

Ingressus est itaque Gedeon,And so Gideon entered,et coxit hædum, and he boiled a goat,et de farinæ modio azymos panes:and he made unleavened bread from a measure of flour.carnesque ponens in canistro,And setting the flesh in a basket,et jus carnium mittens in ollam, and putting the broth of the flesh in a pot, tulit omnia sub quercu,he took it all under the oak tree,et obtulit ei.and he offered it to him.

Cui dixit angelus Domini:And the Angel of the Lord said to him,Tolle carnes et azymos panes,“Take the flesh and the unleavened bread,et pone supra petram illam, and place them on that rock,et jus desuper funde.and pour out the broth upon it.”Cumque fecisset ita,And when he had done so,

extendit angelus Domini summitatem virgæ,the Angel of the Lord extended the end of a staff, quam tenebat in manu, which he was holding in his hand,et tetigit carnes et panes azymos:and he touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves.ascenditque ignis de petra,And a fire ascended from the rock,et carnes azymosque panes consumpsit:and it consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves.angelus autem Domini evanuit ex oculis ejus. Then the Angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.

Vidensque Gedeon quod esset angelus Domini,And Gideon, realizing that it had been the Angel of the Lord, ait:said:Heu mi Domine Deus:“Alas, my Lord God!quia vidi angelum Domini facie ad faciem. For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.”

Dixitque ei Dominus:And the Lord said to him:Pax tecum:“Peace be with you.ne timeas,Do not be afraid;non morieris.you shall not die.”

Ædificavit ergo ibi Gedeon altare Domino,Therefore, Gideon built an altar to the Lord there, vocavitque illud, and he called it,Domini pax, usque in præsentem diem.the Peace of the Lord, even to the present day.Cumque adhuc esset in Ephra,And while he was still at Ophrah,quæ est familiæ Ezri, which is of the family of Ezri,

nocte illa dixit Dominus ad eum:that night, the Lord said to him:Tolle taurum patris tui,“Take a bull of your father’s,et alterum taurum annorum septem, destruesque aram Baal, and another bull of seven years, and you shall destroy the altar of Baal,quæ est patris tui, which is your father’s.et nemus, quod circa aram est, succide. And you shall cut down the sacred grove which is around the altar.

Et ædificabis altare Domino Deo tuo in summitate petræ hujus,And you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, at the summit of this rock, super quam ante sacrificium posuisti:on which you placed the sacrifice before.tollesque taurum secundum,And you shall take the second bull,et offeres holocaustum super struem lignorum, and you shall offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood,quæ de nemore succideris.which you shall cut down from the grove.”

Assumptis ergo Gedeon decem viris de servis suis,Therefore, Gideon, taking ten men from his servants, fecit sicut præceperat ei Dominus.did just as the Lord had instructed him.Timens autem domum patris sui,But fearing his father’s household,et homines illius civitatis, and the men of that city, per diem noluit id facere,he was not willing to do it by day. Instead, sed omnia nocte complevit.he completed everything by night.

Cumque surrexissent viri oppidi ejus mane,And when the men of that town had risen up in the morning, viderunt destructam aram Baal, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, lucumque succisum, and the sacred grove cut down,et taurum alterum impositum super altare, and the second bull set upon the altar, quod tunc ædificatum erat.which then had been built.

Dixeruntque ad invicem:And they said one to another,Quis hoc fecit?“Who has done this?”Cumque perquirerent auctorem facti, dictum est:And when they inquired everywhere as to the author of the deed, it was said,Gedeon filius Joas fecit hæc omnia.“Gideon, the son of Joash, did all these things.”

Et dixerunt ad Joas:And they said to Joash:Produc filium tuum huc,“Bring forward your son here,ut moriatur:so that he may die.quia destruxit aram Baal,For he has destroyed the altar of Baal,et succidit nemus.and he has cut down the sacred grove.”

Quibus ille respondit:But he responded to them:Numquid ultores estis Baal,“Could you be the avengers of Baal,ut pugnetis pro eo? qui adversarius est ejus,so that you fight on his behalf? Whoever is his adversary, moriatur antequam lux crastina veniat:let him die before the light arrives tomorrow;si deus est,if he is a god, vindicet se de eo, qui suffodit aram ejus.let him vindicate himself against him who has overturned his altar.”

Ex illo die vocatus est Gedeon Jerobaal,From that day,eo quod dixisset Joas:Gideon was called Jerubbaal,Ulciscatur se de eo Baal, because Joash had said, qui suffodit aram ejus.“Let Baal avenge himself against him who has overturned his altar.”

Igitur omnis Madian,And so,et Amalec, all of Midian,et orientales populi, and Amalek, congregati sunt simul:and the eastern peoples were gathered together.et transeuntes Jordanem,And crossing the Jordan, castrametati sunt in valle Jezraël.they encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

Spiritus autem Domini induit Gedeon,But the Spirit of the Lord entered Gideon, who,qui clangens buccina convocavit domum Abiezer, ut sequeretur se.sounding the trumpet, summoned the house of Abiezer so that he might follow him.

Misitque nuntios in universum Manassen,And he sent messengers into all of Manasseh, qui et ipse secutus est eum:who also followed him,et alios nuntios in Aser et Zabulon et Nephthali, and other messengers into Asher, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, qui occurrerunt ei.who went to meet him.

Dixitque Gedeon ad Deum:And Gideon said to God:Si salvum facis per manum meam Israël,“If you will save Israel by my hand, sicut locutus es,just as you have said:

ponam hoc vellus lanæ in area:I will set this wool fleece on the threshing floor.si ros in solo vellere fuerit,If there will be dew only on the fleece,et in omni terra siccitas, and all the ground is dry, sciam quod per manum meam,I will know that by my hand, sicut locutus es,as you have said, liberabis Israël.you will free Israel.”

Factumque est ita.And so it was done.Et de nocte consurgens expresso vellere,And rising in the night, wringing out the fleece, concham rore implevit.he filled a vessel with the dew.

Dixitque rursus ad Deum:And again he said to God:Ne irascatur furor tuus contra me si adhuc semel tentavero,“Let not your fury be enkindled against me, if I test once more, signum quærens in vellere.seeking a sign in the fleece.Oro ut solum vellus siccum sit,I pray that only the fleece may be dry,et omnis terra rore madens.and all the ground may be wet with dew.”

Fecitque Deus nocte illa ut postulaverat:And that night, God did as he had requested.et fuit siccitas in solo vellere, et ros in omni terra. And it was dry only on the fleece, and there was dew on all the ground.
