Igitur Jerobaal qui et Gedeon,And so Jerubbaal, who is also Gideon,de nocte consurgens, rising in the night,et omnis populus cum eo,and all the people with him, venit ad fontem qui vocatur Harad.went to the fountain which is called Harod.Erant autem castra Madian in valle ad septentrionalem plagam collis excelsi. Now the camp of Midian was in the valley, to the northern region of the high hill.
Dixitque Dominus ad Gedeon:And the Lord said to Gideon:Multus tecum est populus,“The people with you are many, nec tradetur Madian in manus ejus:but Midian shall not be delivered into their hands,ne glorietur contra me Israël,for then Israel might glory against me,et dicat:and say,Meis viribus liberatus sum.‘I was freed by my own power.’
Loquere ad populum,Speak to the people,et cunctis audientibus prædica:and proclaim in the hearing of all,Qui formidolosus et timidus est, revertatur.‘Whoever has dread or fear, let him return.’Recesseruntque de monte Galaad, et reversi sunt de populo viginti duo millia virorum,And twenty-two thousand of the men from the people withdrew from Mount Gilead and returned,et tantum decem millia remanserunt.and only ten thousand remained.
Dixitque Dominus ad Gedeon:And the Lord said to Gideon:Adhuc populus multus est:“The people are still too many.duc eos ad aquasLead them to the waters,et ibi probabo illos:and there I will test them.et de quo dixero tibi ut tecum vadat,And those about whom I tell you that he may go with you, ipse pergat;let him go;quem ire prohibuero,he whom I shall forbid to go,revertatur.let him return.”
Cumque descendisset populus ad aquas,And when the people had descended to the waters, dixit Dominus ad Gedeon: Qui lingua lambuerint aquas, the Lord said to Gideon: “Whoever will lap the water with the tongue, sicut solent canes lambere, separabis eos seorsum:as dogs usually lap, you shall separate them by themselves.qui autem curvatis genibus biberint, in altera parte erunt. Then those who will drink by bending their knees shall be on the other side.”
Fuit itaque numerus eorum qui manu ad os projiciente lambuerunt aquas,And so the number of those who had lapped the water, by bringing it with the hand to the mouth, trecenti viri:was three hundred men.omnis autem reliqua multitudo flexo poplite biberat. And all the remainder of the multitude drank by bending the knee.
Et ait Dominus ad Gedeon:And the Lord said to Gideon:In trecentis viris qui lambuerunt aquas,“By the three hundred men who lapped the water, liberabo vos,I will free you,et tradam in manu tua Madian:and I will deliver Midian into your hand.omnis autem reliqua multitudo revertatur in locum suum. But let all the remainder of the multitude return to their place.”
Sumptis itaque pro numero cibariis et tubis,And so, taking food and trumpets in accord with their number, omnem reliquam multitudinem abire præcepit ad tabernacula sua:he instructed all the rest of the multitude to go back to their tents.et ipse cum trecentis viris se certamini dedit. And with the three hundred men, he gave himself to the conflict.Castra autem Madian erant subter in valle. Now the camp of Midian was below, in the valley.
Eadem nocte dixit Dominus ad eum:In the same night, the Lord said to him:Surge,“Rise up,et descende in castra:and descend into the camp.quia tradidi eos in manu tua.For I have delivered them into your hand.
Sin autem solus ire formidas,But if you dread to go alone, descendat tecum Phara puer tuus.let your servant Purah descend with you.
Et cum audieris quid loquantur,And when you will hear what they are saying, tunc confortabuntur manus tuæ,then your hands will be strengthened,et securior ad hostium castra descendes.and you will descend more confidently to the camp of the enemy.”Descendit ergo ipseTherefore,et Phara puer ejus in partem castrorum,he descended with his servant Purah into a portion of the camp, ubi erant armatorum vigiliæ.where there was a watch of armed men.
Madian autem et Amalec,But Midian, and Amalek,et omnes orientales populi, fusi jacebant in valle, and all the eastern peoples lay spread out in the valley,ut locustarum multitudo:like a multitude of locusts.cameli quoque innumerabiles erant,Their camels, too, were innumerable, sicut arena quæ jacet in littore maris.like the sand that lies on the shore of the sea.
Cumque venisset Gedeon,And when Gideon had arrived, narrabat aliquis somnium proximo suo:someone told his neighbor a dream.et in hunc modum referebat quod viderat:And he related what he had seen, in this way:Vidi somnium,“I saw a dream,et videbatur mihi quasi subcinericius panis ex hordeo volvi, and it seemed to me as if bread, baked under ashes from rolled barley,et in castra Madian descendere:descended into the camp of Midian.cumque pervenisset ad tabernaculum,And whenever it arrived at a tent, percussit illud,it struck it,atque subvertit, and overturned it,et terræ funditus coæquavit.and utterly leveled it to the ground.”
Respondit is, cui loquebatur:He to whom he spoke, responded:Non est hoc aliud, nisi gladius Gedeonis filii Joas viri Israëlitæ:“This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash, tradidit enim Dominus in manus ejus Madian,a man of Israel. For the Lord has delivered Midian into his hands,et omnia castra ejus.with their entire camp.”
Cumque audisset Gedeon somnium,And when Gideon had heard the dreamet interpretationem ejus, and its interpretation, adoravit:he worshipped.et reversus est ad castra Israël,And he returned to the camp of Israel,et ait:and he said:Surgite,“Rise up!tradidit enim Dominus in manus nostras castra Madian. For the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into our hands.”
Divisitque trecentos viros in tres partes,And he divided the three hundred men into three parts.et dedit tubas in manibus eorum,And he gave trumpets, and empty pitchers, lagenasque vacuas, ac lampades in medio lagenarum.and lamps for the middle of the pitchers, into their hands.
Et dixit ad eos:And he said to them:Quod me facere videritis,“What you will see me do,hoc facite:do the same.ingrediar partem castrorum,I will enter a portion of the camp,et quod fecero, and what I do,sectamini.you shall follow.
Quando personuerit tuba in manu mea,When the trumpet in my hand blares out,vos quoque per castrorum circuitum clangite, you also shall sound the trumpets,et conclamate:on every side of the camp,Domino et Gedeoni.and shout together to the Lord and to Gideon.”
Ingressusque est Gedeon,And Gideon,et trecenti viri qui erant cum eo,and the three hundred men who were with him,in partem castrorum, entered a portion of the camp, incipientibus vigiliis noctis mediæ:at the beginning of the watch in the middle of the night.et custodibus suscitatis,And when the guards were alerted,cœperunt buccinis clangere, they began to sound the trumpetset complodere inter se lagenas.and to clap the pitchers against one another.
Cumque per gyrum castrorum in tribus personarent locis,And when they had sounded their trumpets in three places around the camp,et hydrias confregissent, and had broken their water pitchers, tenuerunt sinistris manibus lampades, they held the lamps in their left hands,et dextris sonantes tubas, and sounded the trumpets in their right hands.clamaveruntque:And they cried out,Gladius Domini et Gedeonis:“The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”
stantes singuli in loco suo per circuitum castrorum hostilium. And each one was standing in his place throughout the camp of the enemies.Omnia itaque castra turbata sunt,And so the entire camp was in confusion;et vociferantes ululantesque fugerunt:and they fled away, wailing and crying out.
et nihilominus insistebant trecenti viri buccinis personantes. And the three hundred men nevertheless continued sounding the trumpets.Immisitque Dominus gladium omnibus castris,And the Lord sent the sword into the entire camp,et mutua se cæde truncabant, and they maimed and cut down one another,
fugientes usque ad Bethsetta, fleeing as far as Bethshittah,et crepidinem Abelmehula in Tebbath.and the base of Abelmeholah in Tabbath.Conclamantes autem viri Israël de Nephthali,But the men of Israel pursued Midian,et Aser, shouting from Naphtaliet omni Manasse, and Asher, persequebantur Madian.and from all of Manasseh.
Misitque Gedeon nuntios in omnem montem Ephraim,And Gideon sent messengers throughout all of Mount Ephraim, dicens:saying,Descendite in occursum Madian, et occupate aquas usque Bethbera atque Jordanem.“Descend to meet Midian, and occupy the waters ahead of them as far as Bethbarah and the Jordan.”Clamavitque omnis Ephraim,And all of Ephraim cried out,et præoccupavit aquas atque Jordanem usque Bethbera.and they occupied the waters ahead of them, from the Jordan even to Bethbarah.
Apprehensosque duos viros Madian,And having apprehended two men of Midian,Oreb et Zeb,Oreb and Zeeb, interfecit Oreb in petra Oreb, they put Oreb to death at the Rock of Oreb,Zeb vero in torculari Zeb.and truly, Zeeb, at the Winepress of Zeeb.Et persecuti sunt Madian,And they pursued Midian, capita Oreb et Zeb portantes ad Gedeon trans fluenta Jordanis.carrying the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, across the waters of the Jordan.
