Dixeruntque ad eum viri Ephraim:And the men of Ephraim said to him,Quid est hoc quod facere voluisti,“What is this,ut nos non vocares, that you wanted to do,cum ad pugnam pergeres contra Madian?so that you would not call us when you went to fight against Midian?”jurgantes fortiter,And they rebuked him strongly,et prope vim inferentes.and came close to using violence.
Quibus ille respondit:And he responded to them:Quod enim tale facere potui, quale vos fecistis?“But what could I have done that would be so great as what you have done?nonne melior est racemus Ephraim, vindemiis Abiezer? Is not one bunch of grapes of Ephraim better than the vintages of Abiezer?
In manus vestras Dominus tradidit principes Madian,The Lord has delivered into your hands the leaders of Midian,Oreb et Zeb:Oreb and Zeeb.quid tale facere potui,What could I have done that would be so great as what you have done?”quale vos fecistis? And when he had said this,Quod cum locutus esset, their spirit, requievit spiritus eorum, which was swelling up against him,quo tumebant contra eum.was quieted.
Cumque venisset Gedeon ad Jordanem,And when Gideon had arrived at the Jordan, transivit eum cum trecentis viris, qui secum erant:he crossed over it with the three hundred men who were with him.et præ lassitudine, fugientes persequi non poterant. And they were so weary that they were unable to pursue those who were fleeing.
Dixitque ad viros Soccoth:And he said to the men of Succoth,Date,“I beg you, obsecro, give bread to the people who are with me,panes populo qui mecum est,for they are greatly weakened, quia valde defecerunt:so that we may be able to pursue Zebah and Zalmunna,ut possimus persequi Zebee et Salmana reges Madian.the kings of Midian.”
Responderunt principes Soccoth:The leaders of Succoth answered,Forsitan palmæ manuum Zebee“Perhaps the palms of the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna are in your hand,et Salmana in manu tua sunt, and for this reason,et idcirco postulas ut demus exercitui tuo panes.you request that we give bread to your army.”
Quibus ille ait:And he said to them,Cum ergo tradiderit Dominus Zebee“So then,et Salmana in manus meas, when the Lord will have delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hands, conteram carnes vestras cum spinis tribulisque deserti.I will thresh your flesh with the thorns and briers of the desert.”
Et inde conscendens,And going up from there, venit in Phanuel:he arrived at Penuel.locutusque est ad viros loci illius similia. And he spoke to the men of that place similarly.Cui et illi responderunt,And they also answered him, sicut responderant viri Soccoth.just as the men of Succoth had answered.
Dixit itaque et eis:And so he said to them also,Cum reversus fuero victor in pace,“When I will have returned as a victor in peace, destruam turrim hanc.I will destroy this tower.”
Zebee autem et Salmana requiescebant cum omni exercitu suo.Now Zebah and Zalmunna were resting with their entire army.Quindecim enim millia viri remanserant ex omnibus turmis orientalium populorum,For fifteen thousand men were left out of all the troops of the eastern people.cæsis centum viginti millibus bellatorum educentium gladium. And one hundred twenty thousand warriors that drew the sword had been cut down.
Ascendensque Gedeon per viam eorum,And Gideon ascended by the way of those who were dwelling in tents, qui in tabernaculis morabantur,to the eastern part of Nobahad orientalem partem Nobe et Jegbaa, and Jogbehah.percussit castra hostium,And he struck the camp of the enemies, qui securi erant, who were confidentet nihil adversi suspicabantur.and were suspecting nothing adverse.
Fugeruntque Zebee et Salmana,And Zebah and Zalmunna fled.quos persequens Gedeon comprehendit,And Gideon pursued and overtook them, turbato omni exercitu eorum.sending their entire army into confusion.
Revertensque de bello ante solis ortum,And returning from the war before sunrise,
apprehendit puerum de viris Soccoth:he took a boy from among the men of Succoth.interrogavitque eum nomina principum et seniorum Soccoth,And he asked him the names of the leaders and elders of Succoth.et descripsit septuaginta septem viros. And he described seventy-seven men.
Venitque ad Soccoth,And he went to Succoth,et dixit eis:and he said to them:En Zebee et Salmana,“Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, super quibus exprobrastis mihi, over whom you rebuked me, saying:dicentes: Forsitan manus Zebee et Salmana in manibus tuis sunt,‘Perhaps the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna are in your hands, and for this reason,et idcirco postulas ut demus viris, qui lassi sunt et defecerunt, panes.you request that we give bread to men who are languishing and weakened.’”
Tulit ergo seniores civitatis et spinas deserti ac tribulos, et contrivit cum eis atque comminuit viros Soccoth. Therefore, he took the elders of the city, and, using the thorns and briers of the desert, he threshed them with these, and he cut the men of Succoth to pieces.
Turrim quoque Phanuel subvertit,He also overturned the tower of Penuel, occisis habitatoribus civitatis.and he killed the men of the city.
Dixitque ad Zebee et Salmana:And he said to ZebahQuales fuerunt viri, and Zalmunna, quos occidistis in Thabor?“What kind of men were those whom you killed at Tabor?”Qui responderunt:They responded,Similes tui,“They were like you,et unus ex eis quasi filius regis.and one of them was like the son of a king.”
Quibus ille respondit:He answered them:Fratres mei fuerunt,“They were my brothers, filii matris meæ.the sons of my mother.Vivit Dominus,As the Lord lives, quia si servassetis eos,if you had preserved them, non vos occiderem.I would not kill you.”
Dixitque Jether primogenito suo:And he said to Jether, his firstborn son,Surge,“Rise up,et interfice eos.and put them to death.”Qui non eduxit gladium:But he did not draw his sword.timebat enim,For he was afraid, quia adhuc puer erat.being still a boy.
Dixeruntque Zebee et Salmana:And Zebah and Zalmunna said:Tu surge,“You should rise up and rush against us.et irrue in nos:For the strength of a man is in accord with his age.”quia juxta ætatem robur est hominis.Gideon rose up,Surrexit Gedeon, and he killed Zebah and Zalmunna.et interfecit Zebee et Salmana:And he took the ornaments and studs,et tulit ornamenta ac bullas quibus colla regalium camelorum decorari solent.with which the necks of the royal camels are usually adorned.
Dixeruntque omnes viri Israël ad Gedeon:And all the men of Israel said to Gideon:Dominare nostri tu,“You should rule over us,et filius tuus, and your son,et filius filii tui:and your son’s son.quia liberasti nos de manu Madian. For you freed us from the hand of Midian.”
Quibus ille ait:And he said to them:Non dominabor vestri,“I will not rule over you.nec dominabitur in vos filius meus,Neither shall my son rule over you. Instead, sed dominabitur vobis Dominus.the Lord shall rule over you.”
Dixitque ad eos:And he said to them:Unam petitionem postulo a vobis:“I petition one request from you.date mihi inaures ex præda vestra.Give me the earrings from your spoils.”Inaures enim aureas Ismaëlitæ habere consueverant. For the Ishmaelites were accustomed to wear gold earrings.
Qui responderunt:They responded,Libentissime dabimus.“We are very willing to give them.”Expandentesque super terram pallium,And spreading a cloak on the ground, projecerunt in eo inaures de præda:they cast upon it the earrings from the spoils.
et fuit pondus postulatarum inaurium, mille septingenti auri sicli,And the weight of the earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, absque ornamentis, aside from the ornaments,et monilibus, and necklaces,et veste purpurea, and purple garments, quibus reges Madian uti soliti erant, which the kings of Midian were accustomed to use,et præter torques aureas camelorum.and aside from the gold chains on the camels.
Fecitque ex eo Gedeon ephod,And Gideon made an ephod from these,et posuit illud in civitate sua Ephra.and he kept it in his city,Fornicatusque est omnis Israël in eo,Ophrah.et factum est GedeoniAnd all of Israel committed fornication with it,et omni domui ejus in ruinam.and it became a ruin to Gideon and to all his house.
Humiliatus est autem Madian coram filiis Israël,But Midian was humbled before the sons of Israel.nec potuerunt ultra cervices elevare:Neither were they able any longer to lift up their necks.sed quievit terra per quadraginta annos,But the land rested for forty years, quibus Gedeon præfuit.while Gideon presided.
Abiit itaque Jerobaal filius Joas,And so Jerubbaal, the son of Joash,et habitavit in domo sua:went and lived in his own house.
habuitque septuaginta filios,And he had seventy sons, qui egressi sunt de femore ejus:who went forth from his own thigh.eo quod plures haberet uxores. For he had many wives.
Concubina autem illius,But his concubine, quam habebat in Sichem, whom he had in Shechem, genuit ei filium nomine Abimelech.bore him a son named Abimelech.
Mortuusque est Gedeon filius Joas in senectute bona,And Gideon, the son of Joash, died in a good old age,et sepultus est in sepulchro Joas patris sui in Ephra de familia Ezri.and he was buried in the sepulcher of his father, at Ophrah, of the family of Ezri.
Postquam autem mortuus est Gedeon,But after Gideon died, aversi sunt filii Israël,the sons of Israel turned away,et fornicati sunt cum Baalim.and they committed fornication with the Baals.Percusseruntque cum Baal fœdus,And they struck a covenant with Baal,ut esset eis in deum:so that he would be their god.
nec recordati sunt Domini Dei sui,And they did not remember the Lord their God,qui eruit eos de manibus inimicorum suorum omnium per circuitum:who rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on all sides.
nec fecerunt misericordiam cum domo Jerobaal Gedeon,Neither did they show mercy to the house of Jerubbaal Gideon, juxta omnia bona quæ fecerat Israëli.in accord with all the good that he had done for Israel.
