Tunc jussit eam introire ubi repositi erant thesauri ejus,Then he ordered her to enter where his valuables were stored,et jussit illic manere eam,and he ordered her to wait there,et constituit quid daretur illi de convivio suo.and he appointed what should be given to her from his own feast.
Cui respondit Judith,And Judith responded to him,et dixit:and she said:Nunc non potero manducare ex his quæ mihi præcipis tribui,“Now,ne veniat super me offensio:I am not able to eat from these things which you instructed to be allotted to me,ex his autem quæ mihi detuli, lest an offense come upon me.manducabo.But I will eat from that which I have brought.”
Cui Holofernes ait:And Holofernes said to her,Si defecerint tibi ista, quæ tecum detulisti,“If these things that you have brought with you should fail you, quid faciemus tibi?what shall we do for you?”
Et dixit Judith:And Judith said,Vivit anima tua, domine meus,“As your soul lives, my lord, quoniam non expendet omnia hæc ancilla tua, your maidservant will not expend all these things, donec faciat Deus in manu mea hæc quæ cogitavi.until God accomplishes by my hand what I have in mind.”Et induxerunt illam servi ejus in tabernaculum quod præceperat. And his servants led her into the tabernacle, as he instructed.
Et petiit dum introiret,And, as she was entering,ut daretur ei copia nocte et ante lucem egrediendi foras ad orationem, she requested that it be permitted to her to go outside at night, before daylight,et deprecandi Dominum.in order to pray and to petition the Lord.
Et præcepit cubiculariis suis ut sicut placeret illi,And he instructed his chamberlains that she may exit and enter, exiret et introiret ad adorandum Deum suum per triduum:just as it may please her, to adore her God, for three days.
et exibat noctibus in vallem Bethuliæ,And she went out in the nights into the valley of Bethulia,et baptizabat se in fonte aquæ.and she washed herself in a fountain of water.
Et ut ascendebat,And, as she climbed up,orabat Dominum Deum Israël ut dirigeret viam ejus ad liberationem populi sui.she prayed to the Lord God of Israel that he would direct her way, to the liberation of his people.
Et introiens,And entering, munda manebat in tabernaculo usque dum acciperet escam suam in vespere.she remained pure in the tabernacle, until she received her own food in the evening.
Et factum est, in quarto die Holofernes fecit cœnam servis suis,And it happened on the fourth day that Holofernes made a supper for his servants,et dixit ad Vagao eunuchum suum:and he said to Vagao his eunuch: “Go,Vade, et suade Hebræam illam ut sponte consentiat habitare mecum.and persuade that Hebrew woman to willingly consent to live with me.
Fœdum est enim apud Assyrios,For it is disgraceful among the Assyrians,si femina irrideat virum agendo ut immunis ab eo transeat.if a woman mocks a man, acting so as to pass through with immunity from him.”
Tunc introivit Vagao ad Judith,Then Vagao entered toward Judith,et dixit:and he said,Non vereatur bona puella introire ad dominum meum,“May she not dread, my good young woman, to enter to my lord,ut honorificetur ante faciem ejus,so that she may be honored before his face,ut manducet cum eo, et bibat vinum in jucunditate.so that she may eat with him and drink wine with cheerfulness.”
Cui Judith respondit:Judith answered him:Quæ ego sum,“Who am I,ut contradicam domino meo?that I should contradict my lord?
omne quod erit ante oculos ejus bonum et optimum,All that will be good and best before his eyes, I will do.faciam.Moreover,Quidquid autem illi placuerit, whatever will please him, to me,hoc mihi erit optimum omnibus diebus vitæ meæ.that will be what is best, all the days of my life.”
Et surrexit,And she arose and dressed herself with her garments,et ornavit se vestimento suo,and entering,et ingressa stetit ante faciem ejus.she stood before his face.
Cor autem Holofernes concussum est:But the heart of Holofernes was struck.erat enim ardens in concupiscentia ejus. For he was burning with desire for her.
Et dixit ad eam Holofernes:And Holofernes said to her,Bibe nunc,“Drink now,et accumbe in jucunditate, and recline with cheerfulness, quoniam invenisti gratiam coram me.for you have found favor before me.”
Et dixit Judith:And Judith said,Bibam, domine,“I will drink, quoniam magnificata est anima mea hodie præ omnibus diebus meis.my lord, because my soul has been magnified this day, beyond all my days.”
Et accepit, et manducavit et bibit coram ipso ea quæ paraverat illi ancilla ejus. And she accepted and ate and drank in his sight what her handmaid had prepared for her.
Et jucundus factus est Holofernes ad eam,And Holofernes became pleased with her, bibitque vinum multum nimis, and he drank very much wine, quantum numquam biberat in vita sua.more than he had ever drunk in his life.
