Ut autem sero factum est,So then, when it had become late, festinaverunt servi illius ad hospitia sua,his servants hurried to their lodgings,et conclusit Vagao ostia cubiculi, et abiit.and Vagao closed the chamber doors, and he went away.
Erant autem omnes fatigati a vino,But they were all drowsy from the wine.
eratque Judith sola in cubiculo. And Judith was alone in the chamber.
Porro Holofernes jacebat in lecto,Moreover, Holofernes, being very inebriated, nimia ebrietate sopitus.was fast asleep, reclining on his bed.
Dixitque Judith puellæ suæ ut staret foris ante cubiculum,And Judith told her handmaid to stand outside before the chamber,et observaret.and to watch.
Stetitque Judith ante lectum,And Judith stood in front of the bed, orans cum lacrimis, praying with tears,et labiorum motu in silentio, and her lips moved in silence,
dicens:saying:Confirma me,“Confirm me,Domine Deus Israël,O Lord God of Israel,et respice in hac hora ad opera manuum mearum, ut,and in this hour look kindly upon the works of my hands, so that, sicut promisisti, just as you promised,Jerusalem civitatem tuam erigas:you may raise up Jerusalem, your city, and so that,et hoc quod credens per te posse fieri cogitavi, believing through you that this plan is able to be accomplished, perficiam.I may succeed.”
Et cum hæc dixisset,And when she had said this, accessit ad columnam quæ erat ad caput lectuli ejus, she approached the pillar,et pugionem ejus, which was at the head of the bed,qui in ea ligatus pendebat, and she released his blade, exsolvit.which was hanging tied to it.
Cumque evaginasset illum,And when she had unsheathed it,apprehendit comam capitis ejus, she grabbed him by the hair of his head,et ait:and she said,Confirma me,“Confirm me,Domine Deus,O Lord God,in hac hora.in this hour.”
Et percussit bis in cervicem ejus,And she struck him twice on his neck,et abscidit caput ejus, and she cut off his head,et abstulit conopeum ejus a columnis, and she took off his canopy from the pillars,et evolvit corpus ejus truncum.and she rolled away the trunk of his body.
Et post pusillum exivit,And after a little while, she went out,et tradidit caput Holofernis ancillæ suæ,and she delivered the head of Holofernes to her handmaid,et jussit ut mitteret illud in peram suam.and she ordered her to put it in her bag.
Et exierunt duæ,And the two went out, secundum consuetudinem suam, according to their custom, quasi ad orationem,as if to prayer,et transierunt castra, and they passed through the camp,et gyrantes vallem, and having circled around the valley, venerunt ad portam civitatis.they came to the gate of the city.
Et dixit Judith a longe custodibus murorum:And Judith, from a distance, spoke to the watchmen on the walls,Aperite portas,“Open the gates, quoniam nobiscum est Deus, qui fecit virtutem in Israël.for God is with us, and he has acted with his power in Israel.”
Et factum est cum audissent viri vocem ejus,And it happened that, when the men had heard her voice, vocaverunt presbyteros civitatis.they called the elders of the city.
Et concurrerunt ad eam omnes,And all rushed toward her,a minimo usque ad maximum:from the least to the greatest.quoniam sperabant eam jam non esse venturam. For, until then, they held no hope that she would return.
Et accendentes luminaria,And, enflaming the lights, congyraverunt circa eam universi:they gathered all around her.illa autem ascendens in eminentiorem locum, jussit fieri silentium. But she climbed up to a higher place, and she ordered them to be made silent.Cumque omnes tacuissent,And when all had quieted down,
dixit Judith:Judith said:Laudate Dominum Deum nostrum,“Praise the Lord our God,qui non deseruit sperantes in se,who has not abandoned those who hope in him.
et in me ancilla sua adimplevit misericordiam suam,And by me, his handmaid, he has fulfilled his mercy, quam promisit domui Israël:which he promised to the house of Israel.et interfecit in manu mea hostem populi sui hac nocte. And he has killed the enemy of his people, by my hand this night.”
Et proferens de pera caput Holofernis,Then, taking the head of Holofernes from the bag, ostendit illis, she displayed it to them, saying:dicens:“Behold,Ecce caput Holofernis principis militiæ Assyriorum, the head of Holofernes the leader of the military of the Assyrians,et ecce conopeum illius, and behold his canopy,in quo recumbebat in ebrietate sua, under which he reclined in his drunkenness, ubi per manum feminæ percussit illum Dominus Deus noster.where the Lord our God struck him by the hand of a woman.
Vivit autem ipse Dominus,But, as the Lord himself lives, quoniam custodivit me angelus ejus et hinc euntem, his angel has been my guardian both from my departure,et ibi commorantem, and while staying there,et inde huc revertentem, and when returning from there.et non permisit me Dominus ancillam suam coinquinari,And the Lord has not permitted me, his handmaid, to be defiled, sed sine pollutione peccati revocavit me vobis gaudentem in victoria sua,but he has called me back to you without the pollution of sin, rejoicing in his victory,in evasione mea,in my escape,et in liberatione vestra.and in your liberation.
Confitemini illi omnes,Confess everything to him, quoniam bonus, for he is good, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.for his mercy is with every generation.”
Universi autem adorantes Dominum,Then everyone adored the Lord, dixerunt ad eam:and they said to her,Benedixit te Dominus in virtute sua,“The Lord has blessed you by his power, quia per te ad nihilum redegit inimicos nostros.because, through you, he has reduced our enemies to nothing.”
Porro Ozias princeps populi Israël dixit ad eam:Furthermore, Uzziah, the leader of the people of Israel,Benedicta es tu, filia, said to her: “O daughter,a Domino Deo excelso præ omnibus mulieribus super terram.you have been blessed by the Lord, the most high God, above all the women on earth.
Benedictus Dominus,Blessed is the Lord, qui creavit cælum et terram, who made heaven and earth, qui te direxit in vulnera capitis principis inimicorum nostrorum:who has guided you in harming the head of the leader of our enemies.
quia hodie nomen tuum ita magnificavit,For he has so magnified your name this day,ut non recedat laus tua de ore hominum qui memores fuerint virtutis Domini in æternum, that your praise will not retire from the mouth of men,pro quibus non pepercisti animæ tuæ propter angustiaswho will be mindful of the power of the Lord forever,et tribulationem generis tui, because you have risked your life for the sake of the distress and tribulation of your people, sed subvenisti ruinæ ante conspectum Dei nostri.and you have prevented our ruin before the sight of our God.”
Et dixit omnis populus:And all the people said:Fiat,“Amen.fiat.Amen.”
Porro Achior vocatus venit,And so, Achior was called,et dixit ei Judith: Deus Israël,and he drew near, and Judith said to him:cui tu testimonium dedisti quod ulciscatur se de inimicis suis,“The God of Israel, to whom you gave testimony, has avenged himself on his enemies.ipse caput omnium incredulorum incidit hac nocte in manu mea.He has cut down the head of all unbelievers, by my hand this night.
Et ut probes quia ita est,And, so that you may determine that this is so,ecce caput Holofernis, behold, the head of Holofernes, who,qui in contemptu superbiæ suæ Deum Israël contempsit, et tibi interitum minabatur,in the contempt of his pride, despised the God of Israel and threatened Israel with ruin, dicens:saying,Cum captus fuerit populus Israël,‘When the people of Israel have been captured, gladio perforari præcipiam latera tua.I will instruct your sides to be pierced through with a sword.’”
Videns autem Achior caput Holofernis,Then Achior, seeing the head of Holofernes, angustiatus præ pavore cecidit in faciem suam super terram, and being distressed by fear, fell upon his face on the ground,et æstuavit anima ejus.and his soul became agitated.
Postea vero quam resumpto spiritu recreatus est,In truth, after this, when he had recovered his breath, procidit ad pedes ejus,he fell down before her feet,et adoravit eam,and he showed reverence for her,et dixit:and he said:
Benedicta tu a Deo tuo in omni tabernaculo Jacob,“Blessed are you by your God, in every tabernacle of Jacob, quoniam in omni gente quæ audierit nomen tuum, for in every nation that will hear of your name, magnificabitur super te Deus Israël.the God of Israel will be magnified over you.”
