Cumque omnis exercitus decollatum Holofernem audisset,And when the entire army had heard that Holofernes was beheaded, fugit mens et consilium ab eis, reason and resolution fled from them, and,et solo tremore et metu agitati, being moved by trembling and fear alone, fugæ præsidium sumunt, they thought only to flee to safety.

ita ut nullus loqueretur cum proximo suo,So then, no one spoke with his neighbor, sed inclinato capite, relictis omnibus, but hanging their heads and leaving everything behind, evadere festinabant Hebræos,they hurried to escape from the Hebrews, who, quos armatos super se venire audiebant,as they had heard, were advancing against them well-armed.fugientes per vias camporum et semitas collium. And they fled through the ways of the fields and the paths of the hills.

Videntes itaque filii Israël fugientes,And so, the sons of Israel, seeing them fleeing, secuti sunt illos.pursued them.Descenderuntque clangentes tubis, et ululantes post ipsos. And they went down after them, sounding the trumpets and howling.

Et quoniam Assyrii non adunati,And, since the Assyrians were not united,in fugam ibant præcipites:they rushed headlong in their flight.filii autem Israël uno agmine persequentes debilitabant omnes quos invenire potuissent. But the sons of Israel, pursuing like one unit, struck down all they were able to find.

Misit itaque Ozias nuntios per omnes civitatesAnd so,et regiones Israël.Uzziah sent messengers through all the cities and regions of Israel.

Omnis itaque regio,And then, omnisque urbs electam juventutem armatam misit post eos, every region and every city sent their chosen young men with weapons after them,et persecuti sunt eos in ore gladii, and they pursued them with the edge of the sword, quousque pervenirent ad extremitatem finium suorum.until they passed through to the extremities of their borders.

Reliqui autem qui erant in Bethulia,But the remainder, who were in Bethulia, ingressi sunt castra Assyriorum, et prædam quam fugientes Assyrii reliquerant, entered the camp of the Assyrians and took away the plunder that the Assyrians, in their flight, abstulerunt, had left behind,et onustati sunt valde.and they were exceedingly burdened.

Hi vero qui victores reversi sunt ad Bethuliam, omnia quæ erant illorum attulerunt secum,In truth, those who returned victorious to Bethulia brought with them everything that was theirs.ita ut non esset numerus in pecoribus et jumentis et universis mobilibus eorum,So there was no numbering their cattle, and beasts, and everything they could carry,ut a minimo usque ad maximum omnes divites fierent de prædationibus eorum.so much so that, from the least to the greatest, all were made rich by their spoils.

Joacim autem summus pontifex de Jerusalem venit in Bethuliam cum universis presbyteris suis ut videret Judith. But Joachim, the high priest, came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his elders to see Judith.

Quæ cum exisset ad illum,And when she had gone out to him, benedixerunt eam omnes una voce, they all blessed her with one voice, dicentes:saying:Tu gloria Jerusalem;“You are the glory of Jerusalem,tu lætitia Israël;you are the joy of Israel,tu honorificentia populi nostri:you are the honor of our people.

quia fecisti viriliter,For you have acted manfully,et confortatum est cor tuum, and your heart has been strengthened.eo quod castitatem amaveris,For you loved chastity, and, after your husband,et post virum tuum, alterum nescieris:you have not known any other. Therefore, ideo et manus Domini confortavit te,also the hand of the Lord has strengthened you, and,et ideo eris benedicta in æternum.therefore, you will be blessed for all eternity.”

Et dixit omnis populus:And all the people said:Fiat,“Amen.fiat.Amen.”

Per dies autem triginta, vix collecta sunt spolia Assyriorum a populo Israël.But all of thirty days were scarcely enough for the people of Israel to collect the spoils of the Assyrians.

Porro autem universa quæ Holofernis peculiaria fuisse probata sunt, dederunt Judith in auro,But moreover, all of those things that were clearly the particular possessions of Holofernes they gave to Judith:et argento, with gold,et vestibus, and silver,et gemmis, and garments,et omni supellectili:and gems, and furniture.et tradita sunt omnia illi a populo. And these were all delivered to her by the people.

Et omnes populi gaudebant cum mulieribus,And all the people rejoiced,et virginibus, with the women,et juvenibus, and the virgins,in organisand the young men,et citharis.playing on wind instruments and stringed instruments.
