Dixit autem Judith ad omnem populum:Then Judith said to all the people:Audite me,“Hear me,fratres:brothers.suspendite caput hoc super muros nostros:Suspend this head over our walls.

et erit,And,cum exierit sol,as soon as the sun rises, accipiat unusquisque arma sua,let everyone take up his weaponset exite cum impetu, and go out to attack, non ut descendatis deorsum, not going down all the way,sed quasi impetum facientes.but only to seem as if making an assault.

Tunc exploratores necesse erit ut fugiant ad principem suum excitandum ad pugnam. Then the scouts will have to hurry to awaken their leader for the fight.

Cumque duces eorum cucurrerint ad tabernaculum Holofernis,And when their commanders rush into the tabernacle of Holofernes,et invenerint eum truncum in suo sanguine volutatum, and they find his headless body wallowing in his blood, decidet super eos timor.fear will fall over them.

Cumque cognoveritis fugere eos,And when you realize that they are fleeing, ite post illos securi,go after them in security, quoniam Dominus conteret eos sub pedibus vestris.for the Lord will crush them under your feet.”

Tunc Achior,Then Achior, videns virtutem quam fecit Deus Israël,seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, relicto gentilitatis ritu, left behind the rituals of the Gentiles.credidit Deo,He believed in God,et circumcidit carnem præputii sui,and he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin,et appositus est ad populum Israël,and he was placed among the people of Israel,et omnis successio generis ejus usque in hodiernum diem.and so were all the succession of his kindred, even until this present day.

Mox autem ut ortus est dies,And soon, suspenderunt super muros caput Holofernis,at the rising of day, accepitque unusquisque vir arma sua, they suspended the head of Holofernes above the walls,et egressi sunt cum grandi strepituand every man took up his weapons,et ululatu.and they went out with a great uproar and howling.

Quod videntes exploratores,When the scouts saw this,ad tabernaculum Holofernis cucurrerunt.they rushed to the tent of Holofernes.

Porro hi qui in tabernaculo erant, venientes,Moreover, those who were in the tent came and made a loud noise before the entrance to the bedchamber,et ante ingressum cubiculi perstrepentes, excitandi gratia, inquietudinem arte moliebantur, hoping to awaken him by an attempt at skillful noise-making,ut non ab excitantibus, not by intruding on him,sed a sonantibus Holofernes evigilaret.so that Holofernes might be roused from sleep.

Nullus enim audebat cubiculum virtutis Assyriorum pulsando aut intrando aperire. For no one dared to knock, or to open and enter, the bedchamber of the powerful leader of the Assyrians.

Sed cum venissent ejus duces ac tribuni,But when his commanders and tribunes had arrived,et universi majores exercitus regis Assyriorum, with all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, dixerunt cubiculariis:they said to the chamberlains:

Intrate,“Enteret excitate illum, and awaken him, quoniam egressi mures de cavernis suis, for the mice have come out of their holes, ausi sunt provocare nos ad prælium.intending to challenge us to fight.”

Tunc ingressus Vagao cubiculum ejus,Then Vagao, entering his bedchamber, stetit ante cortinam, stood before the curtain,et plausum fecit manibus suis:and he made a clapping noise with his hands.suspicabatur enim illum cum Judith dormire. For he suspected that he was sleeping with Judith.

Sed cum nullum motum jacentis sensu aurium caperet,But when, with attentiveness, he perceived no motion of anyone reclining, accessit proximans ad cortinam,he approached the curtain.et elevans eam,And lifting it up,vidensque cadaver absque capite Holofernis in suo sanguine tabefactum jacere super terram,he saw the dead body of Holofernes, without a head, lying on the ground, exclamavit voce magna cum fletu, soaked in his own blood. He cried out with a loud voice and weeping,et scidit vestimenta sua.and he tore his garments.

Et ingressus tabernaculum Judith,And he entered the tent of Judithnon invenit eam,and did not find her.et exiliit foras ad populum,And he ran out to the people,

et dixit:and he said:Una mulier hebræa fecit confusionem in domo regis Nabuchodonosor:“One Hebrew woman has caused confusion in the house of Nebuchadnezzar the king.ecce enim Holofernes jacet in terra,For behold, Holofernes lies on the ground,et caput ejus non est in illo.and his head is not with him.”

Quod cum audissent principes virtutis Assyriorum,Now when the leaders of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, sciderunt omnes vestimenta sua, they all tore their garments,et intolerabilis timor et tremor cecidit super eos,and an intolerable fear and trembling fell over them,et turbati sunt animi eorum valde.and their minds were greatly disturbed.

Et factus est clamor incomparabilis in medio castrorum eorum. And there was an unprecedented outcry in the midst of their camp.
